Msw media. Hello and welcome to the Daily beans for Monday, June 22, 2026. Today, Todd Blanche tells the court that he refuses to rescind the Warran $1.8 billion slush fund in writing. Immigration and Customs Enforcement is having a fire sale on concentration camps. Video contradicts an FBI agent's account of a shooting during an undercover sting in Country Club Hills. The Italian Prime Minister is calling Donald out for his lies. And Trump claims the problem with the Reflecting Swamp is left wing antifa vandals. I'm Alison Gill.
And I'm Dana Goldberg. It's exhausting.
I was gonna say you sound a little exasperated.
I'm like. And I'm Dana Goldberg. Because everything that went through my head was like, is algae antifa now? Is that what we're calling algae and anti fascist?
I was like, do they have the same number of letters? No, no, but it's close. Yeah, yeah. it's bizarre. But before we get to the news, I just want to thank everybody who came to the gala this weekend in Chicago. We had such an amazing time.
What an extraordinary night, an extraordinary community. The laughter, the joy, the community in the room. I know I've already said that word twice. I just. And Tig was so fucking funny. I mean, what a great set. and watching such a pro do this crowd work with our patrons was just a joy for me to watch, you know, up close. I've worked with Tig a few times, but just a lovely human being.
M. Yeah, we can tell everyone now that the gala is over that, oh, Dana did a set. And then, Tig Notaro came and did some comedy. And we had, before that, we had about an hour and a half or two of just, tacos and open, bars.
Charlotte Clymer, Andy McCabe.
Yep, yep. And mingling and photos. It was a blast. Earlier in the day, we all met at the Riverfront to take a group bird watching photo of Trump Tower. And we'll share these pictures in the coming days over on Beans Talk. All right, we have a ton of news to get to today. Let's hit the hot notes. Hot notes. All right, first up from cbs, the Trump administration on Friday declined to submit a written declaration in court from Acting Attorney General Todd Blanch and Treasury Secretary Scott Besant, reiterating that the government is not continuing with the controversial $1.8 billion anti weaponization slush fund, calling a judge's demand for such a filing unnecessary. Sir, I think you just proved why it is, in fact, necessary. Boy, they sure are fighting hard for something that's not going to see the light of day.
Uh-huh.
In a notice to the federal court in Alexandria, Virginia, senior Justice Department lawyers rebuffed U.S. district Judge Leonie Brinkuma's request for the declaration from Blanche Besant and Associate Attorney General Stan Woodward. Brinkham has said last week that to avoid any further litigation, the senior official should file the declaration under penalty of perjury that the anti weaponization program wouldn't proceed in any manner or. Or under any name. She also granted a preliminary injunction that blocks the Justice Department from taking any action to create or operate the program, which remains in place. That block remains in place, and she may have to extend it. The judge warned that if the administration opted not to file the declaration, the lawsuit, brought by a coalition that includes two nonprofits and a former federal prosecutor, would move forward. In the notice, Andrew Block, senior counsel to Stanley Woodward, said, our deputy attorney general needs a lawyer. I just want to point. yeah, Associate Deputy Attorney General. Excuse me. The. Andrew Block said the declaration is unnecessary, and, the compelled testimony of senior officials from the executive branch implicates serious separation of powers concerns. I don't know why he's an old Southern lawyer, but he is in my head. He noted that Blanch had already testified to Congress that the fund is not going forward, period. And said similar assertions have been made in court filings from the Justice Department. Accordingly, this court's demands are unnecessary. That's what he wrote. And its presumption that mootness can arise only by compelling testimony from three senior government officials implicates separation of powers concerns. As stated multiple times, the fund is not moving forward. Trust us, bro.
I know.
It's unclear whether Block's arguments will be enough to persuade that they will not, but that's really nice of you, cbs, to think that they might persuade the judge to agree that the lawsuit should be dropped. I'm not dropping my lawsuit. I can tell you that right now.
Nor should you quote.
It is telling that even after the federal court gave them a week, the acting attorney general and other senior administration officials continue to refuse to say under oath that the slush fund is dead and won't operate in the future. That's, Skye Perryman. As we know, she's been on the beans before. President and CEO of Democracy Forward, which is representing the plaintiffs. Nor have they provided any information under oath about their compliance with the court's prior directives. Brinkoma gave the Trump administration the chance to clarify the fund's status following a hearing Last week, Block argued before the court that the case should be dismissed because the administration hadn't set up the fund and isn't going ahead with it. While the Justice Department made the assertion in court filings and to Congress during a hearing earlier this month, the judge noted that none of those statements were made under penalty of perjury.
Nice.
The anti weaponization fund was created as part of a deal to settle, and I put settle in quotes, a civil lawsuit Trump filed against himself against the Internal Revenue Service in January over the leak of his tax returns by a government contractor. The $1.776 billion program aimed to provide a systematic process to hear and redress claims of others who suffered weaponization and lawfare. But the fund drew backlash from Republicans on the Hill, who raised concerns with the possibility that people involved in the January 6 attack on the Capitol could receive payouts. Interesting. It's an attack on the Capitol again.
Republicans.
Okay, cool. After the anti weaponization program threatened to derail the Republicans immigration agenda in Congress, Blanche told a House committee that the Justice Department was not moving forward with the fund. But he refused to put it in writing, raising the possibility that the fund could be resurrected in another form. The Justice Department also argued in court papers in two different legal challenges that the program, quote, had not been set up and is now not going forward and said the cases are moot and should be dismissed in their entirety. They haven't responded to my lawsuit yet, by the way. Government lawyers argued that none of the five members who would establish and administer the fund have even been appointed. Oh, okay. Well, then everything's fine.
Yeah.
But during the hearing before Brinkama last week, the judge expressed skepticism over the DOJ's assertion that the fund is dead. Good for this judge, because I also have issues. The case before Brinkhama was filed by a former prosecutor who worked on cases involving the January 6th attack, as well as the city of New Haven, Connecticut, and two nonprofit groups, Common Cause and the National Abortion Federation. Other challenges to the fund have been brought in Washington, D.C. and California.
What? What?
That's me.
In one of the cases in Washington involving a government watchdog group, a federal judge declined to temporarily halt operation of the fund. That was Cruz lawsuit.
Thank you so much for that, Alison. You know we will keep you posted. This one's from CNN. U.S. president Donald Trump deepened his feud with Italian counterpart Giorgia Meloni on Saturday, doubling down on claims that she insisted on a photo with him at the G7 summit in France this week. And I quote, italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni asked over and over for a picture with me during the G7 meeting in France. That's what Trump said on social media of the leader, who had been a key European ally. He claimed that Meloni's popularity was plummeting, suggesting it was a result of her refusing to help the US in its conflict in Iran.
Yeah, that's it.
But the Italian leader was quick to rebuff Trump's declaration, suggesting his argument was nonsense and advising the President to direct his attention toward his own popularity rather than hers. And I quote, President Trump, these constant and gratuitous attacks are senseless. This is what Meloni wrote on Facebook later Saturday. She added that her friendship with the US Leader has never contributed to her popularity, as the president claimed. The right wing leader said her popularity endures because of her, quote, ability to defend Italy's national interests, which she said is why she denied the US Access to Italian military bases earlier this year. And I quote, in any case, my popularity is none of your concern. That's what Meloni said as she smoked a cigarette, flipped him off and went off on her Vespa. And she did none of those things. I'd suggest you focus on yours. She may have done all those things, by the way. The spat is the latest dip in the deteriorating relationship between the once close leaders and further fracture between the US and the European allies coming after tentative signs of repair at the G7 summit this week in France. Trump's remarks came after Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Dehani announced Friday that he was canceling a planned trip to the United States, where he was due to meet with Secretary of State Marco Rubio over the heated exchange. The two were snapped during the summit. But the spat began when an interview with Italy's La7 TV this week, Trump claimed Maloney had, and I quote, begged him for a photo. So we know that's not true. And he obliged because he felt sorry for her. According to a dubbed Italian translation posted by the outlet. This is Trump. She begged me to take a picture with her. She wanted a picture with me so badly. I wouldn't have taken it, but I felt sorry for her. Now, Maloney refuted the comments in a sharply worded video post Friday morning, saying they deserved, quote, an immediate response. Donald Trump's statements are completely fabricated. I'm frankly shocked. I don't know why the President of the United States behaves this way towards his own allies. And it's not the first time it's happened. That's what she said in a video that was Posted on Twitter. I can only say that it's a shame he doesn't have the same determination with the enemies of the west, with the enemies of the United States, with leaderships with which he instead appears much more accommodating. That is some fucking shade. But you must remember one thing. Italy and I never beg. That's what Meloni said. Meloni had found support in Italian media. One far right outlet on Saturday carried the front page headline, trump is an asshole.
That's a far right outlet?
Yep.
In Italy.
Unbelievable.
All right, next up from the Times. The idea was meant to supercharge President Trump's mass deportation plan. ICE would purchase more than a dozen empty warehouses across the US to massively expand its capacity to detain people deemed to be in the country illegally, which in turn would spike deportations. A year into Trump's term, it had bought 11 facilities at the cost of a billion dollars. But in a major turnabout, the agency is planning to offload seven warehouses purchased from more than 700 million by either giving them to other federal agencies or selling them outright. That's according to documents obtained by the Times. The decision to sharply scale back the warehouse plan is a rejection of a signature initiative under the previous Homeland Security Secretary, Kristi Noem, who pushed the boundaries of what the government can do, to aggressively round up potential deportees. Really pushed the boundaries? How about broke the law? Can you say that? The new secretary, Marquain Marquane Mullen, who has privately expressed skepticism about the plan, has said publicly he wants the agency to be quieter about breaking the fucking law. Sorry about how it carries out immigration enforcement. The move comes months after Ms. Noem's agency, flush with cash, pursued an idea to fundamentally change immigration detention. She was fired because she wasn't buying these things up fast enough, as a matter of fact. Now the shift also raises questions about the original decision making behind the plan to buy these warehouses. A costly undertaking that involved converting industrial space into places that could house thousands of human beings with water and sewer capacity, proper ventilation, and created almost immediate conflict with local communities across the states. ICE has been battered by lawsuits over a lack of environmental checks, and the Homeland Security Department's inspector general is investigating the purchases. The warehouses that they plan to hand off or sell are in Romulus, Michigan, Social Circle, Georgia, Flowery Branch, Georgia, Hamburg and Tremont, Pennsylvania, Salt Lake City and Roxbury, New Jersey. And Dana, my question, and something that the Times didn't really kind of bring up here, is that they're selling them at a massively discounted rate. And that raises alarm bells for me because it seems like the Trump administration just came in, used our taxpayer money to buy up all this property and now is going to just sell it all at like half the price.
And you know why? Tax break. It's. It's probably like a capital gains loss or something within there.
But, you know, he doesn't personally see that, but, like, is he skimming off the top?
Well, he's selling a lot of these places the government bought for twice as much. So probably people that are his donors. Oh, right.
They're buying them up.
Right. And they were, you know, valued at like 1.8 and he ended up paying like 13 million or something. Fucking insane. And so selling them off, he. The federal government, if they were buying these and now they're selling them off at such a discounted rate. I don't know. It's somehow there's something in the tax there that they're going to be able to like, claim it as a loss.
Yeah. Federal numbers, maybe that or, or just let's say Donald Trump uses our money to buy a billion dollar yacht and sells it to a friend for 500 million, who can then turn around and sell it for 750 million.
Yeah.
And make $250 million off of our taxpayer money.
Yep, yep.
Right. Like, what is happening? That's what I want somebody to follow.
There's something. This is a pay to play for. Sure. Absolutely.
It's weird.
Absolutely. This next one's from the Chicago Sun Times, where we just were. Video of a law enforcement officer shooting of a Markham teenager June 9 in country club Hills appears to contradict the account given to a federal judge last week in a sworn affidavit from an FBI special agent. U.S. magistrate Judge Kerry Holub Hodeling ordered the video's public release Thursday after its discovery prompted federal prosecutors to drop charges related to an attempted robbery during an undercover operation in South Suburb. Now, the judge entered her order over objections from federal prosecutors and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives, who told her the shooting is being investigated by the Illinois State Police in conjunction with Cook county state attorneys Eileen o' Neill Burke's office, as well as by Chicago Civilian Office of Police Accountability.
I don't know why they objected to releasing the video. They objected to releasing the video because it shows that the FBI agent lied to the court.
Yep. The video depicts the shooting of Demond Edwards. He was only 18. An FBI agent sworn an affidavit last week that according to the law enforcement officer who shot Edwards, and I quote, edwards struck the law enforcement officer multiple times about his face and body with his fists. But no punches appear to be thrown in the video. Rather, the grainy footage recorded from a distance appears to show a man with the gun straddling another person. The person eventually slides away through the man's legs and stands up. The man with the gun turns and points his gun toward the escaping subject, who then collapses to the ground as if he'd been shot. A COPA statement indicates the officer who opened fire was a Chicago police officer assisting the atf. The ATF and federal prosecutors asked Hodeling not to allow release of the video, arguing it, and I quote, would jeopardize the independent investigation of the officer involved shooting. I think we've established that's not why now. Hodeling ordered its release anyway after it played a central role in federal prosecutors decision this week to drop charges related to the attempted robbery of undercover law enforcement officers in Country Club Hills. Holla Podoling ordered the charges dismissed without prejudice, meaning new charges could still be filed. In a statement Thursday night, U.S. attorney Andrew Boutro's office called the facts of the case fluid and developing and said multiple investigations are going on. More facts will be forthcoming. Okay. Our decision to dismiss the complaint should not be read at all as a retreat of this case or the events giving rise to charges. Now, the video and events surrounding it, they further strained their trust between Boutros office and federal judges in Chicago. Boutros leadership team apparently became aware of the video a week ago, but the prosecutors handling the case didn't see it until Tuesday. And I quote, as soon as I, counsel of record and the prosecuting attorney for this case viewed that video, I immediately took steps to obtain approval to dismiss the complaint. This is from Assistant US Attorney Luke Fielder told the judge during a hearing Thursday. The prosecutor added that, and I quote, as soon as I saw it, it obviously called into question portions of the evidence that was sworn out. And one thing is immediately clear, which is that this complaint needs to be dismissed in its entirety.
I wonder how long he's going to have a job before Boutros fires him.
Yeah, no kidding.
Boutros, by the way, is the U.S. attorney that oversaw the Broadview Six case.
Ah.
where they did all that grand jury shenanigans behind closed doors.
Yeah.
Yikes. all right, next up from the Times, Trump said Saturday that multiple individuals have been arrested for vandalizing the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool. No, you vandalized it, sir. And that problems with a more than $14 million renovation project had become so severe that the pool will have to be at least partly drained for necessary repairs. The president's announcement late Saturday, made on social media, was his starkest acknowledgment of the pool's rapid deterioration in recent. The water this week has become covered by clouds of blooming algae which were obscuring the floor that had just been painted a shade that Mr. Trump has called American flag blue. The paint then began to peel off, making it a tourist destination for unusual reasons. Among those accused of vandalism was David Carter Hearn, who's 67, he's a cyclist, and he's a three time Olympian as a canoeist who said he stopped at the site on Friday just to have a look and then reached down to touch a strip of the peeling blue paint that had mixed with the alga. And that's when the US Park Police arrested him, accusing him of destroying government property, a crime that can carry up to a 10 year prison sentence. Unless you are a January 6th rioter.
Right. Then you actually get money from the federal government if they get their slush fund.
Mm. Mr. Hearn denies the charge. The administration has not released the names of the others accused of vandalizing the pool, a crime that Mr. Trump said Saturday could lead to years in jail. In a later post, he said without evidence, that vandals had poured corrosive and destructive chemicals into the pool. What?
Those were his people? The vandals were the people who. They paid $13 million to do this paint job.
Were the guys in the vests with the peroxide vandals or apparently work for the government? I don't know, man, but that's not destruction of government property. Touching a peeled off piece of paint isn't. Anyway, I hope we're gonna follow this case because I hope it goes nowhere.
It's funny how the New York Times keeps calling. Have you noticed in almost all the stories, it's Mr. Trump? I don't remember the last time someone called him. They were writing a story about Joe Biden. Mr. Biden, it was always the president. It's so interesting. I mean, the New York Times just keeps Calling him Mr. Trump.
Yeah. Although both are acceptable.
No, totally.
Yeah. I have to, you know, I'll go back and check it, check that out to see what kind of treatment past presidents have gotten on that. But yeah, that's. They keep. You're right. They keep. They keep calling him Mr. Trump. All right, everybody, we have some good news we have to get to, but we're going to Take a quick break first. So stick around. Absolutely. All, right. Wendy pronouns she and her. I had a wonderful time at the gala. It was an amazing evening. Thank you for all your hard work keeping us informed and laughing. Attaching my bird watching photo I took on Sunday before heading back to Minneapolis.
Lovely.
And another real short one. This is dot pronoun she and her. I love this. Also Laura, dot and Laura pronoun she and her. Thanks for the opportunity to be a part of the gala. We love you here's our bird for Saturday, June 20th.
Thank you both. All right, Joan Pronoun. She and her dear beans Queens. I'm a devoted listener here in the coastal South Carolina and was thrilled to see monarch butterflies finally make it onto the pet tariff list. In our first Summer here in 2012, we discovered a fat green and yellow worm on the patio.
Patio.
parsley. My husband took a photo and we discovered it was a black swallowtail butterfly caterpillar. Later that year, I was gifted some milkweed, and sure enough, monarch butterflies found them and deposited countless eggs. We took a deep dive into how to raise both species, and now it's 14 years later, and I'm utterly besotted with these stunningly beautiful creatures. Here's a monarch with the zinnias and a black swallowtail female, which are distinguished by blue coloring. I listened to your podcast while working in my butterfly gardens. This is so amazing news with swearing feeds my soul. South Carolina Democrats are trying once again to oust Lindsey Graham. So please, please, my fellow Leguminati, take a look at Dr. Annie Andrews, the Democratic mother, pediatrician, and gun control advocate running for his seat. You can see her at drdoctorannyandrews.com thanks for all you do. Look at these gorgeous butterflies.
Oh, my gosh, they really are. Monarch butterflies are extraordinary.
They really are.
I went to a butterfly habitat once and I was like, holy cow, they come. You're not supposed to let them touch your sk because it does. The oils do bad things to their wings, so usually you have to have a piece of paper that is like, for somehow they attract them. So hopefully they land on the paper. It's impressive. It's beautiful. All right. This is from Michelle in Michigan. No pronouns given. Hi. Hi, Michelle. Because I'm struck dumb by this administration and gop, I thought I'd show you a moment I had with my much loved dog, Molly, a couple of the many deer which graced my property. The babies are always so cute and very curious. In the one, you can see mama in the background keeping an eye on Molly, ever vigilant. And the other is Molly, who was a vacuum on legs for anything edible, joining a doe consuming the gobs of mulberries which also grace our property. Oh, my God, this is so cute. I thought these would make you smile, as they do for me. My Molly has gone to doggy heaven. I miss her terribly, but I'll see her again, I hope. Thanks again. Oh, these are beautiful.
Look at the dough and the dog. I know. So adorable. And The Bambi baby.
I love it.
Michelle, thank you for that. Next up from Chris Pronoun. She and her hello beans queens. I was scrolling and floating in m my pool this afternoon because I live on the face of the sun. Phoenix. We used to call it the surface of the sun. Yeah, I saw a post from Liz Oyer. Ah, yes, the lawyer. She was the pardon attorney for the DOJ until she was fired by a shitbag. Yeah, we've had her on the Unjustified podcast with Andy. The post was about her substack, which I've included a link to that has good information about how to help stop the confirmation of Todd Blanche. I just wanted to share some good trouble. I love listening to your show. Happy summer to all the teachers and paras out there. Peace. So we've got a link to Liz Oyer's substack piece. It's time for we the people to take on Todd Blanche. look how sweet. Love it. All right, this is from Mindy. This is a cat's point of view. Hi Dana, Momo here. I heard you wanted to hear from a cat that gets snuggles for 20 minutes. As soon as my mom walks in the door from work, I run down the hall to her room to her room door and I shout until she opens it. I run in and I lay on her bed beside where I know she will sit down to put on comfy clothes. I start purring before she even gives me my first ear scritch. She's told me that I have magic powers because she'll love on me for 20 minutes and then finish changing clothes. I live with my big sister Casey, who is 12. I am the last thing she wanted in her waning years. She sometimes loves me and has taught me a lot of things, but the best is how to sit for treats. See the photo? Mindy here, by the way, pronoun she and her mom has only been with us since November. She turned one in April. This routine is truly the thing that gets me through the day. I'm pretty sure we have sat there for longer. As Momo said, our pet tax is a photo of her and Casey sitting for treats. Don't even try to guess Casey's breed because we don't know what she is either. I just know that she has been my emotional support bestie since day one. I found you ladies a few months Ago. And you all have ridden to work with me every single morning since. Let's do everything we can to dismantle this shit. Show of a regime. I left my narcissist alcoholic husband only months before the orange turd rolled down the escalator. I need a fucking break.
Oh, yeah, you do. Look at this beautiful cat. And look at this sweet doggie. Some sort of chihuahua mix probably. I would think so, but just fantastic. Thank you, Mindy. Thank you, Momo. Appreciate you. next up, Shadow the cat. Good morning, ladies of the beans.
I'm laughing at what I started.
I know there's a lot. My name is Shadow and I'm a cat. I'm writing today to tell you some good news that made my humans cautiously optimistic. The warehouse that was to be used for an ICE detention center is now being sold by ice. No one really knows what the future holds for that property. But for now, it won't be a detention center. My humans said that resistance pays. I believe that because we're both smiling and doing that high five thing people do. They said resistance plus persistence equals hope. For my pod pet. Pass. I don't like the word Tara. I'm attaching a photo of my favorite perch. I have a great view of the kitchen. The other photo is self explanatory. Thanks for making my human smile. Sincerely, Shadow. Look at the kitty. And that's pretty. Resist and persist. I like that.
I love that.
All right, more cat point of view. I love. I just. I love it. And I love that you have started this.
I really do think we could give a directive and it could be anything. And we've got somebody who will follow it
because we have the most amazing creative on. I know, I swear. y' all are brilliant. So thank you. All right, everybody, we're going to be back in your ears tomorrow. We're going to head over and record, some beans talk. And do, you have any final thoughts?
Just a reminder, for some reason, you keep missing the announcement. I'm going to be performing live in Chicago on September 23rd at the Den. tickets are on my website, danagoldberg.com and you can get them. They're selling, so grab your seats. I would love to have as many Beats listeners and the audience as we can have. So that's it. That's my announcement, my final thoughts for today.
Awesome.
thank you so much, everybody. We'll see you tomorrow. Until then, please take care of yourselves, take care of each other, take care of the planet, take care of your mental health, and take care of your family. I've, been ag. I've been dg and them's the Beans.
