Those six House Democrats are Henry Cuellar in Texas, Don Davis, Jared, Golden from Maine, Tony Gonzalez in Texas, Adam Gray in California, and of course, Maria Glusenkamp Perez in Washington. And here's a quote. I voted for the National Defense Authorization act to strengthen our national defense while improving the pay, housing and our service members and their families. That's what Quailar said in a statement to the Hill, went on to say, this vote is one step in the legislative process and, I'll continue working toward final bipartisan agreement that strengthens our national security while providing more resources to the men and women who serve our country. Independent Rep. Kevin Kylie, who's really just a, Republican here in California, changed his affiliation from Republican to Independent earlier this year so he wouldn't get his ass kicked so hard after the redistricting from Prop 50 in California, trying to hide behind the independent moniker. He also supported this legislation and seven Republican lawmakers opposed it. The Chamber advanced the mammoth bill 216 to 212. A majority of Democrats opposed the legislation, citing opposition to the Iran war and concerns about a provision in the bill that would establish the United States Israel Defense Technology Cooperation Initiative. That's the integration of the US And Israeli military. The section also directs the Secretary of Defense to appoint an executive agent at the Pentagon to oversee this newly formed initiative. Now, Thomas Massie, who's been kind of stepping out of his role as a Republican recently, who led an unsuccessful effort to remove that section, section 219, from the bill earlier this week, said the provision tragically merges our military and supply chains with Israel's. Let's hope this version fails in the Senate, he said, because section 219 is a betrayal of our sovereignty. That's what he wrote in a social media post following the bill's passage. All right, with all that out of the way, we have a Ton of news to get to, so let's hit the hot notes. Hot notes. All right, first up, a model scout who was likely to be questioned by prosecutors in France for his connections to Jeffrey Epstein was found dead this week in a house near Paris, according to French officials. The man, Daniel Sed, was in regular contact with Epstein about a decade ago, according to files released in January by the Justice Department. Their texts suggest that Mr. Sayad repeatedly tried to connect Mr. Epstein, disgraced financier and, accused of running a sex trafficking ring, with people Mr. Sayed described as female models, including one who he said was 15, and many others who were under 18. Mr. Syed later acknowledged his work for Epstein, but denied any wrongdoing. His body was found on Monday in a house in Colombe. That's a northwestern suburb of Paris. I'm probably pronouncing incorrectly, and that's according to the local prosecutor's office. The authorities are apparently still assessing how he died. he was named in February by Laura Bacot, the chief Paris prosecutor, as, quote, one of the people who would be questioned as part of a broader inquiry into people connected to Epstein that opened last month in France. In that statement on Wednesday. In a statement on Wednesday. Excuse me, Ms. M. Bacow said investigators had identified or had been contacted by 24 women who were victims or witnesses of incidents likely committed by Daniel Syed or others implicated, and she had spoken with 16 of them. The investigation had not yet yielded any evidence justifying his immediate arrest. That's what Baco added. In a broadcast interview in May, Syed, denied the accusations against him and said he was waiting for justice to take its course. In that interview, Syed said he had worked as a model Scout for 30 years and was introduced to Epstein in the early 2000s. Over 15 years, Mr. Syed connected Epstein with about a dozen models. Mr. Syed said that none of them ever gave negative feedback about Epstein to him. He said, my relationship with Epstein was strictly professional. Why are. What is professional about sending underage models to a sex trafficker now? separately, prosecutors said this year they'd also received a complaint from a Swedish woman accusing Mr. Sayad of committing sexual acts that she described as rape in 1990 in France. The woman, a former model named Ebba Carlson, wrote on a website that she co founded to publicize testimonies from abuse survivors that Mr. Syed, quote, raped me in a pool house behind a villa on the French Riviera. In. In the May interview, Syed said, I never raped a woman in my life. Now, despite his death, the investigation will continue. To identify, quote, all individuals who may be implicated. According to Ms. Picot in a statement on Wednesday, Syed is the second person connected to Epstein who's been found dead in France in 2022. Jean Luc Brunel, a French modeling agent and Epstein associate who had been charged with rape of minors was found dead in his jail cell. Lots of dead people in Epstein's orbit. But we know Epstein and Maxwell noted famously that Donald Trump was the dog that didn't bark. Next up from MSNow the Department of justice is conducting a criminal investigation into Corey Mills, Republican from Florida, according to two sources familiar adding to the mounting legal and ethical scrutiny facing the embattled congressman. The sources didn't disclose the focus of the investigation, but a third source told Ms. Now at least one person was contacted by the FBI last year about Mills finances, allegations of misconduct and individuals in his orbit. The DOJ investigation comes as Mills stares down an ongoing investigation from the House Ethics Committee, which is looking into allegations that include campaign finance violations, sexual misconduct, accepting improper gifts, financial disclosure violations, and the misuse of congressional resources. Now, Angie McCabe and I are going to go over this in more detail on this weekend's episode of Unjustified, along with the news that a federal prosecutor in Washington state who was ousted by Trump has filed a lawsuit challenging not just his own firing, but a core tenet of the Trump administration's approach to top prosecutorial jobs. The administration fired Roger Rogoff, top federal prosecutor in Seattle, less than an hour after federal judges appointed him to the job, a signal that the White House is once again playing hardball with appointments of top prosecutors around the country. And next up from West Virginia, watch delegate Elliot Pritt, a Republican member of the House of Delegates in, West Virginia, has been charged with enticing a minor after an investigation found he communicated with a girl through Roblox and Snapchat. Pritt, who's 36, is a public school teacher and he represents the 50th district in Fayette County. He serves as assistant majority leader, according to a criminal complaint from the U.S. district Court for the Southern District of West Virginia. Pritt was arrested Wednesday and faces one count of enticement of a minor. The family of a 15 year old female reported that the child had been sexually abused by Pritt, according to the complaint. The complaint said that Pritt began communicating with the girl when she was in eighth grade in 2024 through an online game called Roblox and then later on Snapchat. The communication happened outside of school hours. Quote, by the end of her eighth grade year, Pritt told a minor female that he loved her, according to the complaint. Prit also sent sexually explicit photos of himself and requested that the girl send nude photos of herself through Snapchat. The exchange of Images occurred during 2025 and 2026, the complaint said. Prit later initiated a physical relationship with the minor and requested that she meet him in his classroom at Oak Hill High School to engage in sexual activity at least five to 10 times. How is he not charged with rape? Pritt asked the girl not to tell anyone what happened between them. The investigation found that he told her in a message it would be in the news. It would be awful for both of us. I would lose my entire life. Maybe you deserve it. The Snapchat messages allegedly continued through July. Pritt appeared before the federal magistrate Judge Dwayne Tinsley, on Wednesday for an initial hearing. Pritt was first elected as a Democrat to the House in 2022, but he switched to the Republican Party in 2023, House Communications Director Anne Ali said in a statement. While these are disturbing allegations and we all should be concerned about the welfare of this student, there is a presumption of innocence and a legal process that must be permitted to proceed. The delegate remains a delegate unless or until he resigns or the House's body takes action to remove him from the seat. Delegate Tristan Levitt, Republican from Kanawha, posted on Twitter the federal criminal complaint against Elliot Pritt alleges vile conduct. There is no place for this kind of abuse anywhere, much less someone in a position of trust in a school and in the community. If the allegations are true, Prit should resign from the House of Delegates immediately and I pray this young victim can receive support. Delegate Kayla Young, a Democrat from Kanawa, called for Prit to resign. No one who preys on and abuses a child has any business holding public office. These charges are disqualifying full stop, as there's no version of public service that includes this conduct. My heart goes out to the victim. Delegate Pritt should resign immediately, house Minority Leader Sean Hornbuckle, a Democrat from Cabell, said in a statement. Quote, the breaking news regarding Republican Delegate Elliot Pritt is disturbing and vile. I hope and pray the victims will be okay and can get the help they need. It's past time we prioritize taking action on protecting the innocent when it comes to pedophilia, abuse and violence. That's a House minority leader. Next up from the Post Arizona voters on Tuesday gave Trump the candidates he wanted in primary elections and sent a mixed message to the Democratic establishment, choosing candidates for governor and the U.S. house that set up key races this fall. Three Republicans who questioned or attempted to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential contest won nominations for offices with influence over certifying 2028 election results. While Trump's MAGA brand has stumbled in Arizona in recent years, as demonstrated by Carrie Lake, voters went with the president's choice of Rep. Andy Biggs for the Republican nomination for governor over the more traditional conservatism of Rep. David Schweikart. Now on the Democratic side, one candidate favored by the national party held off a challenge from the left. And here are some key takeaways, from these primaries, which tee up contests that could help determine control of the House in November's midterms. So Biggs beat Schweikart 7315 for a chance to run this fall against Katie Hobbs, who was unopposed in her primary as chairman of the Hard Right Freedom Caucus in the house from 2019 to 2022. Biggs has made a name as a prominent Trump supporter and MAGA activist who questioned the legitimacy of the 2020 election. That hasn't always played well in Arizona, and his staunch opposition to abortion sets up a stark contrast with Hobbs in the general election. Arizona voters passed a constitutional amendment in 2024 that made abortion legal until the point of fetal viability, but many Republicans who control the state legislature continue to favor restrictions. Now Hobbs, who promotes herself as a bipartisan politician she's a former social worker, has said in interviews she expects a close contest with Andy Biggs. The nonpartisan Cook Political Report that's the election analysis site, has rated the state as leaning Democrat. It just moved from toss up to leans Democrat. Election denial is on the ballot this fall with Republicans choice of Biggs for governor, state Senate President Warren Peterson for attorney general and state Rep. Alexander Culloden for secretary of state. Now Peterson has long made unfounded claims of fraud in the 2020 presidential election and earlier this year gave the FBI files from a 2021 state Senate investigation into claims of election irregularities in Maricopa county as part of Trump's ongoing effort to question the results. That county investigation has confirmed that Democrat Joe Biden was the victor. Culloden is a lawyer who was sanctioned by the State Bar of Arizona and placed on probation for his role in filing the Kraken lawsuit in 2020 that sought to prevent the state's presidential electors from casting their ballots for Biden. The suit made false claims about election irregularities and was thrown out by a federal judge. Culloden has continued seeking to restrict voting and his role as the state as a state lawmaker, introducing legislation to limit early voting. As secretary of state, he would be in charge of running Arizona's elections, with the swing state poised to play a significant role in the 2028 presidential contest. He defeated Gina Swoboda, former head of the state Republican Party, for the nomination and will challenge incumbent Democrat Adrian Fontes this fall. Biggs was among Republicans in the House who voted against certifying the 2020 election. Trump attempted to pressure Arizona's governor at the time, Doug Ducey, a Republican, into overturning the state's election results, but Ducey resisted. Jay Freeley, a former NFL kicker for the Cardinals, won the Republican nomination for Arizona's 1st congressional district. If he wins this fall, Feely would join a select list of former NFL players who've made the transition to Congress. Burgess Owens from Utah, a former safety who won a Super bowl with the Oakland Raiders in 81, he's currently serving. Former congressman Colin Allred in Texas, once a linebacker for the Tennessee Titans, is seeking a comeback this fall to run for Senate in 2024. Cook Political Report rates the open seat as a toss up, though, and Democrats have the affluent Scottsdale based district high on their list of possible flips to help them retake control of the House. Former state lawmaker Amish M Shah is leading the race to be the Democratic nominee in the first District over the candidate favored by the House Democratic campaign arm, retired broadcast journalist and former Republican Marlene Galen Woods. The Associated Press has not called the race as of Wednesday morning. Some grassroots Democrats preferred Shah, an emergency room doctor who beat Gallon woods for the nomination in 2024 but then lost the election to Schweikert Gallen. Woods is the widow of Arizona's former GOP Attorney General Grant woods, who has been a confidant of the late Senator John McCain and renounced the Republican Party once Trump came into power. Galan woods said she was switching around the same time. I have always been pro choice, pro democracy, pro climate. My values have never changed. What changed was the Republican Party. That's what she said in a 2024 debate. The Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, the DCCC, the official campaign operation for House Democrats and other party stalwarts such as Emily's List, went to bat for Galen woods, who had a narrow fundraising lead over shaw as of July 1st. Is it gallon or Galen? I'm not sure. Gallon woods would be the third DCCC backed candidate to lose a contested House primary this year, including Jasmeet Baines in California and Joe Baldacci in Maine. As Democratic voters have expressed frustrations with the party's establishment. While left wing challengers have had success against more centrist Democrats in some parts of the country, that trend did not hold in Arizona's 4th congressional district. Incumbent Rep. Greg Stanton easily won his primary against challenger Kai Newkirk, a self described Democratic Socialist that was 65 to 35. Newkirk had won the endorsement of several national left wing groups and attacked Stanton for supporting military aid to Israel, opposing Medicare for all and accepting corporate political donations. Stanton, who has represented the district since 2019 and is a former mayor of Phoenix, far outrays Newkirk. The district includes parts of Phoenix, Tempe and Mesa and has become more conservative since 2022 since the redistricting happened all right, next up from the Wall Street Journal, Trump has formally approved a landmark agreement I can't believe I'm about to say this with Saudi Arabia that will provide the country with civilian nuclear program and potentially open the door to uranium enrichment in the kingdom's territory. The new deal, which would last 30 years, is estimated to be worth tens of billions of dollars. It's designed to give American companies a central role in developing Saudi Arabia's nuclear infrastructure while shutting out other foreign competitors. A key provision of the new accord would have US Companies build a uranium enrichment facility in Saudi Arabia If a joint U.S. saudi study determines such a step would be warranted. That stipulation would give the US Influence over the Saudi nuclear program, and the Trump administration officials argue it would pave a way prevent it from being misused for military purposes. Yet the deal, which is expected to be to submitted to Congress for review in the coming days, is certain to prove controversial among many lawmakers who oppose the spread of nuclear technology in the Middle East. The accord would be difficult for lawmakers to block because an override of a presidential veto would require a joint resolution and two thirds majority in both the House and the Senate. Trump greenlighted the agreement last week and the accord is expected to be signed Wednesday by Energy Secretary Chris Wright, who discussed the deal during his first overseas trip to the region in April of 2025 with his Saudi counterpart, Prince Abdulaziz bin Salman, who will also sign the deal. Quote, the agreement could help revitalize the US Nuclear industry, strengthen US Saudi ties and deny Russia and China a strategically important role in the Saudi nuclear program. That's Robert Einhorn, a former longtime senior State Department official who advised both the Republican and Democratic administrations on non proliferation issues, quote. But unless it contains adequate constraints, including on enrichment, it could increase nuclear proliferation risks in the Middle east and beyond. That's what he added. Saudi officials have long argued the deal is necessary to enable the kingdom to develop a nuclear industry which would draw on unproven uranium or deposits to try to meet energy needs at home. That would free up more of its oil production for export and boost revenues. Saudi Arabia insists its intentions are peaceful, although Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the de facto leader of the country, said in 2018 that if Iran ever developed a nuclear weapon, his nation would follow suit. Westinghouse electric and its AP1000 reactor would be among the biggest beneficiaries of the deal. The AP1000 reactor produces about 1100 megawatts of electricity, enough to power a mid sized city or a major artificial intelligence data center. A focus by lawmakers will be whether the deal's safeguards are adequate to shut the door on the development of potential nuclear weapons at a time of war in the Middle East. Brad Sherman, Democrat of California, said Congress should only approve the deal if Saudi Arabia commits to not enrich uranium or reprocess the spent fuel from a reactor which could be used for a nuclear weapon. Quote A president waging war to prevent nuclear proliferation in the Middle east should not facilitate proliferation just because US Companies stand to make a profit. That's what he wrote on social media. Under the agreement, new power reactors and other nuclear technology would be provided by American companies with potentially a secondary role for some of the company's foreign suppliers as the reactor projects advanced. US And Saudi officials would also carry out a two year study to examine the value of enrichment for Saudi Arabia, including whether it would be commercially viable to enrich the uranium on Saudi soil instead of relying on imported fuel. This is important because you'll remember one of the things, one of the text messages Mike Flynn sent his business partner Copts and from the deus of Trump's first inauguration was Trump's going to rip up sanctions. Their plan was called the Middle East Marshall Plan and it involved building nuclear reactors in Saudi Arabia using Russian uranium, which they needed to lift sanctions to do and have Erik Prince supply armies to guard the reactors. Get this, an effort to recolonize the Middle east. That was the Marshall Plan. We've been talking about this since 2017, going way back to the kitchen table days of the Mueller she wrote podcast. Now if the study concludes that indigenous enrichment is warranted, Americans would build the enrichment facility under a secretive black box arrangement and that would preclude the transfer of sensitive enrichment technology to Riyadh. The Trump administration officials say the American rule would preclude the enriched uranium from being diverted for military purposes and would ensure that the spent fuel from the reactor couldn't be reprocessed to make a bomb. If the US Objects to proceeding with enrichment following the study, the kingdom wouldn't be allowed to carry out enrichment on its own or with another foreign partner for 10 years. Trump administration officials say the US playing a central role in in the Saudi nuclear program would ensure enrichment remains peaceful. Now, critics argue that providing Saudi Arabia with a nuclear program, especially with uranium enrichment or plutonium reprocessing capability, would encourage the spread of nuclear technology in the Middle East. In contrast to the uae, Saudi Arabia has rejected the so called gold standard, a commitment never to enrich uranium at home or reprocess spent fuel from a reactor. Whither goes Saudi Arabia? So goes the United Arab Emirates, Turkey and Egypt. The idea that this will have a happy ending is delusional. That's Henry Sokolsky, executive director of the Non Proliferation Policy Education Center. The debate around the Saudi nuclear deal has also been sharpened by a dispute over future inspections. The Saudis rejected Additional Protocol, an arrangement implemented by the International Atomic Energy Agency that would have provided more rigorous monitoring and inspection. Trump officials say the separate agreement negotiated with the Saudis will still provide for adequate monitoring of the US Provided sites. Critics say the plan will be inadequate for investigating suspected nuclear activities that don't involve the U.S. trump's New Deal is controversial for, foreign policy reasons as well. The Biden administration was prepared to move ahead with nuclear cooperation with Riyadh, but conditioned that deal on Saudi Arabia's willingness to normalize relations with Israel. And prospects for that normalization were sidetracked by Hamas's October 2023 attack on Israel and the Israeli military's subsequent intervention in Gaza. Intervention? It's one way to put it. While Trump has urged Saudi Arabia and other Islamic states to join the Abraham Accords, he isn't insisting that Riyadh establish ties with Israel to purchase American nuclear technology and launch its civil nuclear program. The Saudi deal also comes as the White House is still trying to pressure Iran to curtail its nuclear program and hand over its supply of highly enriched Ur uranium. Iran and Saudi Arabia are regional rivals, and critics say the agreement puts the Trump administration in the awkward position of insisting that Tehran agree to stringent limits on its nuclear efforts as it helps Saudi Arabia develop a civilian nuclear program. Trump officials say there's no contradiction if the Saudi program is subject to effective safeguards. Democratic and Republican presidents have long resisted efforts by Middle Eastern countries to enrich uranium, but blocking the deal is likely to be an uphill battle for lawmakers who oppose it. Some lawmakers have argued that a nuclear deal with Saudi Arabia is such a sensitive issue that it should face a tougher congressional standard. In 2018, a group of Democratic and Republican lawmakers sponsored an act that would block nuclear cooperation with Riyadh unless Congress affirmatively voted to approve it. One of the senators who urged the higher hurdle was then Florida Republican Marco Rubio, who is now the Secretary of State. By the way, that bill was never brought to a vote. Now next up from Jane. Hi, Beans. Queens. Greetings from Falmouth Ma. It's located near, in southern Cape Cod, close to Woods Hole. We took the ferry over to Martha's Vineyard with our electric scooters and spent a few hours exploring Vineyard Haven and Oak Bluffs. Oak Bluffs is probably the best, best known for their gingerbread cottages. Beautiful, charming and, and apparently pricey, selling for around a million dollars a piece. They were originally built as part of a Methodist retreat, the Martha's Vineyard Camp meeting Association, almost 200 years ago. Now it's multi denominational, but still has regular worship services. Fascinating history and very fun to wander through. Scout had to stay in the trailer, but I made it up to her by, finding a nice trail to walk them this morning. She had a leading role in the drama club's play on the heavy subject of mobbing, reliving and coping with some of her own unfortunate experiences in the process. Also, she held her 9th year group presentation on the subject human rights abuse by ice, which she aced the group refer, ah, refrained from receiving the highest marks and chose to overstep the time limit by 20 minutes instead. I couldn't be prouder for you, Allison. I have a page of bloom scrolling since I'm always taking pictures of flowers for my best friend and making compilations for her birthday. So here you go. I have a shout out for a fabulous nonprofit where I volunteer, Pacific Wildlife Care. It's located in San Luis Obispo, California, and we rescue, rehabilitate and release injured wildlife. Over 3,000 birds and small mammals each year. Last year, a couple of volunteers drove to Bakersfield, way out of our area to rescue a female red tailed hawk. She'd been shot and her wing was shattered. But our amazing wildlife vet pinned her wings bones back together and even replaced her missing wing feathers using our library of feathers that we keep from m Deceased birds. Whoa. Once this feisty hawk was back on the mend, our amazing, team, Kreence team took her out many times to a large field for exercise by letting her fly on a very long leash. Several months went by and finally this beautiful raptor was ready to be released. A couple of our mighty volunteers drove her back to Bakersfield, near where she was found. You should have let her stay in San Luis Obispo. It's way better than Bakersfield. and who flew out to greet her? None other than her mate. Okay. That's why you took her back to Bakersfield. This story brings tears to my eyes. After 40 years empowered by donations and 200 volunteers, Pacific Wildlife Care is in the process of having a new, large, larger facility built. And we can be found on the web at Pacific Wildlife Care.org Enclosing pictures of a couple of our rescues. The first is a baby possum who fell out of her mom's back and needed to grow up a bit for at our facility before she could survive in the wild again. The second is a baby raccoon that got his leg wedged between a pole and a fence and needed rescuing. And we were able to free him, have our vet examine him to make sure his leg was okay and then release him back to his family. Oh, my gosh. Oh, there he is. He's stuck in the pole.
