But to get to the news here, Todd Blanche was confirmed very sneakily after Senator Cassidy folded. We discussed this quite a bit over on the Unjustified podcast that came out yesterday. Just a bunch of cowards, all of them. Murkowski and Collins were allowed to vote no, which meant Cassidy had to vote yes. And, I think it was a pretty reluctant vote, but he did it anyway. He folded anyway. And all of this is happening. Dana.

As Katie Fang this week, actually on the 13th, is going to be meeting in court with the Department of Justice to answer for Todd Blanche's failed explanations for his redactions in some of the Epstein files.

All right, thanks, Alison. And this one's from NBC. Andy Ogles. Rep. Andy Ogles of Tennessee lost his Republican primary. That's what NBC News projects, falling to a former state official in a primary season that has been. It's seen unusually high numbers of incumbents losing renomination. Charlie Hatcher, the former state agriculture commissioner, rode support from prominent establishment Republicans to victory over Ogles, a controversial congressman backed by President Donald Trump. Listen, I got no love for Andy. I got no love for either these people. This is just sort of an interesting race. He is a heavy favorite, by the way, in the general election in the very deep red district. Ogles has faced various controversies over the years. He said this year that Muslims don't belong in American society, deleted a homophobic social media post after having blamed a staffer and argued last year that the federal government should revoke future New York Mayor Zoran Mamdani's citizenship and deport him. So, yeah, like I said, no love lost there. But I am sort of surprised he lost his primary.
Yeah, he was also being criminally investigated for the same kind of stuff that George Santos did. Right? Like stealing money and pretending to make enough money to get the party support money in his.
Between that and all the bigotry, you thought he would get the nomination in a landslide.
I thought he was a shoo in, you know, if I'm being honest. But no, he lost to a, more moderate Republican. But you know what?
Now it's just red and not deep red. I mean, it's still. It's going to be red.
Yeah, we'll see. We'll see what ends up happening. But Hatcher, won that race also from Ms. Now, state Rep. Justin Pearson won Tennessee's Democratic primary for the newly redrawn 9th congressional district on Thursday, delivering a victory for the party's progressive wing after a bitter redistricting fight that dismantled the state's longtime majority black district. Pierson defeated State Senator London Lamar, a fellow Memphis Democrat, along with community activist M. Latroy, Alexandria Williams, and physician Jim Torino. The victory marks the latest chapter in Pierson's rapid political rise, three years after he gained national attention as one of the Tennessee three lawmakers, you'll remember them expelled from the state House following gun control protests. So congratulations to Mr. Pierson.
Yes. And, what I was saying a moment m ago, Hunter Biden has said this week that his dad's cancer has spread to his bones. So we are sending all of our love to the Biden family. And we'll just continue to, you know, I don't often, I guess, say pray. You know, I send good thoughts into the universe, and I'll continue to do that. I think he's a good man, and I'm sorry that this is the way he's going.
Yeah, same with me. Particularly in the face of all the science funding cuts and mRNA, which is something, that could, you know, be developed into a cancer vaccine. All of it's being cut and just shoved by the wayside by this administration. It's terrible. And again, love to the family, Joe Biden.
Yeah, I know.
He's such a great president.
He's a good man.
He is. And I think nobody could say otherwise, though. They will. They will.
Oh, of course.
All right, we have news to get to. Let's hit the hot notes. Hot, notes. First up, Dana from the Wall Street Journal. The US labor market shed jobs in July. Negative jobs. An unexp contraction likely to renew questions about the economy's fundamental strength at a time when it's also facing elevated inflation. The Labor Department's July jobs report showed the economy lost 23,000 jobs last month, a big shortfall. They were expecting a gain of 83,000. That's like 100,000 negative swing that economists surveyed by the Wall Street Journal had expected. They thought 83,000 jobs would be created. Now, revisions also happened to May and June payroll numbers, and it showed the economy added 103,000 fewer jobs. So we lost 23,000 in July, and we lost an additional 103,000 over maybe June. More Americans also stepped back from the labor market entirely, according to the Labor Department's separate monthly survey of households. As a result, the unemployment rate eased to 4.1% from 4.2% in June, even though fewer people are working. So when you leave the workforce, they don't put you in the denominator anymore.
Yeah.
The sizable pullback in hiring marked a shift for a labor market that appeared on the upswing earlier this year. Did it?
Did it?
Elevated inflation is likely to remain the Federal Reserve's primary concern. But the unsteady jobs numbers slightly lowered market expectations Friday for a rate increase at the Fed's next meeting. Government job losses pulled July's numbers into negative territory, but private sector hiring made a weak showing as well. Overall, private employers added just 30,000 jobs. In a bright spot, likely reflecting the boom in data centers. The construction sector added 22,000 jobs last month. But let's be clear, AI data center construction jobs are a blip and they will go away. Nobody works in an AI data center. Well, maybe like two people, but you know what I mean. It's not going to add substantially.
So it's got to turn on the lights. Yeah.
Once it's built, those jobs go away. Now, manufacturing gained 5,000, but leisure and hospitality cut 40,000 workers. And after cutting even more in June, nobody wants to travel here. Dana, why is that? And retailers shed more than 19,000 employees. I wonder why.
Because everything costs $8,000. Private sector education and health care jobs grew by 25,000, a relatively poor result for what has been a big source of new jobs over the past year. And over the past two months, the labor force has fallen by nearly a million workers, a large decline for which economists have yet pinned down a clear cause. Faster retirement or the Trump administration's immigration crackdown are natural suspects. But many analysts think those factors aren't the full story. Really?
Really Feels like. Feels like it, maybe.
Look, I don't have a Nobel Prize in economics, but not yet.
Not yet.
If you can't. If, Okay. The trend has pulled down the unemployment rate because it means fewer people are competing for limited available jobs. It's a mixed blessing at best, though, because a smaller workforce limits how much the economy can grow. Thanks, experts at Wall Street Journal. Friday's report marks the second straight year that the July numbers included substantial negative revisions to previous month's Data. When the July 2025 data last year were published, the May and June totals were revised down by a combined 285,000, leaving Trump so angry that he fired the commissioner of the Labor Department statistics agency, Erica McIntarver, which added to the unemployment rate. Yeah, so 285,001 jobs were lost in that. Now, I follow MacIntarfer on social media. I suggest you do as well, because she actually still has a bunch of friends in the labor sector and could tell whether these numbers are bogus or not. You know, so she's a very, very good follow. She knows what she's talking about way more than me. And relatedly, the Washington Post is reporting that Immigration and Customs enforcement arrested 43,000 people in July, a rate that didn't slow even as the federal agency came under scrutiny for shooting and killing two people in Houston and Maine in the span of six days. July's figure is the highest monthly total under the second Trump administration, surpassing last month's previous high. According to ICE detainment data shared to Congress and reviewed by the Post, the federal agency is now focused on arresting People at airports where they are trapped. Through the first seven months of this year, ICE has sent more than 238,000 people into detention facilities. Ugh.
It. The numbers. My God. Okay, this one is from WKLY in Kentucky. On Thursday, a statement released by McConnell's office said that he was released for a rehabilitation hospital even though no one saw him leave. And no one saw him go into his home, apparently, which we think would have been swarming with journalists. That same day, another senator voted on behalf of Mitch McConnell on a bill. Now, a statement from his office said McConnell, 84, would head home and continue intensive physical therapy there. The senator had been hospitalized since a fall at his home on June 14. He has not voted on the Senate floor since June 11. But at a Senate Agricultural Committee hearing Thursday, the chair of the committee said that he had spoken to McConnell the night before and that Wednesday about the farm bill. And this is a quote. I know how much he would have wanted to be here to advocate for Kentucky's farmers in rural communities. Throughout his career, Senator Mitch M. McConnell has been a steadfast champion for the Bluegrass State. That's what Senator John Boozman said. Boodsman voted yes for McConnell by proxy, which is not allowed on the Senate floor, but it can be permitted in committees. But due to rules specific to the Senate Agriculture Committee, his proxy vote didn't count.
But women with babies couldn't vote by proxy.
MmMm. With 10 votes for and 11 against, the bill did not pass out of committee. Democrats stood firm in demanding a two year snap extension. Good for Democrats. Uh-huh.
Yeah. And this just goes to show that if Mitch McConnell could vote, he'd be there voting yes. That means in my book, he is incapacitated and that seat should be declared effectively vacant.
Yeah. Yeah.
Which means Andy Beshear could appoint a Democrat to take that spot. But that was a committee vote, so they wouldn't be on the committee. But you know what I'm saying. Next up from cnn. Over the last few weeks, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs General Dan Kaine has privately made clear to other top Trump advisors that the US Needs to find an off ramp from the war with Iran because the military options on the table to escalate the conflict could backfire and air power alone is unlikely to achieve Trump's stated objectives. What are those objectives? I don't even know what the objective.
I've got no idea at this point.
Quote, kaine is looking for an off ramp, said one of the sources bluntly. And Kaine is not alone. In his view that the war has reached a crossroads. He has discussed concerns about the military options for escalating the conflict and raised the prospect of finding an off ramp from the war with other key cabinet officials, including CIA Director John Ratcliffe, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and Vice President J.D. vance. Nearly six months into a conflict which opened with weeks of claims that Iran's military capabilities had been decimated and which remains defined by the president's pledge of preventing Tehran from obtaining a nuclear weapon, it is highly significant that Trump's most senior general is privately arguing there's no easy military solution to end the war. The president chose to enter. The war has reached a point where many of Trump's top national security officials, bolstered by military doctrine, assessments from the US Intelligence community, and common sense, believe what Kaine himself told lawmakers during a public hearing last month. Air power has its limits now. Trump ultimately decided to back off after talking with Middle east allies who told him they were afraid of Iranian retaliation, specifically retaliatory attacks on their energy infrastructure. And that's according to a senior administration official who spoke to cnn, who added that the president is not taking the planned strikes off the table. Before the war began, Kaine and other military leaders similarly warned Trump that a protracted military campaign could impact weapons stockpiles. So when Trump's like, all of a sudden, we don't have weapons left. Hegseth, what's going on? They've been telling you this since before you fired the first fucking tomahawk, you hippopotamic landmass dumb asshole. Oh, I hate these people. All right, again, I'm not a military expert, but it doesn't take a genius. It just.
You know more about the military than the President of the United States. Allison.
I know all the. I'm more smarter than all the generals combined. But now senior US Military commanders believe the munition stockpile is, quote, dangerously low. And Trump has become increasingly frustrated by how the issue appears to undermine his ability to credibly project strength in negotiations with Iran. Oh, well, maybe you should have listened to the advisors. Kaine has raised concerns about the dwindling munitions stockpile during at least two recent meetings with Trump where potential options for escalating the conflict were discussed. Now, Trump, meanwhile, appears more frustrated by the fact that the war's impact of US Munitions has been reported publicly.
Thank you. That's what I was thinking about the whole time you're reading this. I understand it makes us vulnerable to Iran. Iran's not the only fucking person out there. And I say person as a country that wants to destroy us and now they're like, by the way, they're out of ammunition, everybody.
Airing those grievances during a meeting with his cabinet at Camp David last week. Why are you telling everybody we don't have munitions? Well, you did when you were running for office and said Biden depleted them.

The munition shortage is also one of the reasons the Pentagon and US CENTCOM have recently begun to reevaluate the military strategy. For example, a senior military official at CENTCOM recently sent a crowdsourcing email seeking new and creative, unconventional ways to pressure and punish Iran. I think they put out a Craigslist ad.

Sources noted that doing so six months after the war started amounts to a tacit acknowledgment that things aren't going well. That's a really nice way to put it.

A U.S. federal appeals court ordered Donald Trump's administration on Friday to stop construction on a 400 and as you said, $600 million ballroom on the side of the White House's demolished East Wing, dealing the Republican leader a major setback in a case testing his presidential authority. And this is a quote, each president is a temporary tenant because it's the people's fucking House, not the owner of the White House and cannot fundamentally reshape it without congressional approval. It's what The Washington based U.S. court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit said in a two to one opinion. The order upheld a preliminary injunction won by the National Trust for Historic Preservation, which sued last year after the administration tore down the East Wing and began building a 90,000 square foot, or if you would like the metric system, an 8,360 square meter ballroom without seeking Authorization from Congress, and I quote, whether or not a massive ballroom should be constructed is for Congress to decide and is not a matter of executive self help. That's what the panel's majority wrote. You're not allowed to have an emotional support ballroom, you asshole.

Oh my God. The appeals court placed its ruling on hold for 14 days to allow the Trump administration to appeal to the U.S. supreme Court. Trump, who has increasingly claimed that the ballrooms project is a security necessity, referred to the structure as a military center in a post on Truth Social on Friday and said the administration would appeal to the Supreme Court. He called the decision horrendous and politically motivated and said it left him, other White House officials and visitors exposed to attack. No, no, that's. That's not the case. National Trust President Brent Leggs said in a statement that the ruling marked a great day for our country and for the American people's right to voice their opinions about the historic places they cherish, including the White House. Trump appealed after U.S. district Judge Richard Leon, an appointee of Republican President George W. Bush, twice blocked above ground construction on the site while allowing underground work to continue like he's allowing him to build his bunker. They just don't have anything to cover it. Now. The Democratic appointed judges in the appeals court's majority, this is Circuit Judges Patricia Millett and Brad Garcia, said that their order does not permanently bar construction of a ballroom, but it halts above ground work during the lawsuit until the White House secures approval from Congress. National security arguments, and I quote, are not an automatic get out of law free card. That's from the judges, by the way.

I know, and I quote the bold assertion that the executive can act with utter lawlessness, destroying treasured national landmarks and harming the interest of individuals, and that no court can stop it. Flouts are constitutional order, period. The end. That's what the judge said. Not the period. The end. I added that.
Yeah. Now, of course, the Supreme Court has said in previous rulings, particularly Abrego Garcia, the return Abrego Garcia to the United States ruling that the courts do have to show deference to national security. And so if Trump can pull off his national security thing, even though the above ground part doesn't have anything to do with the bunker. The bunker is the national security part, right?
The above ground part doesn't have anything to do with it, just the below ground part. Trump argues that the stuff that prevents bombs from happening goes on top of the above ground part. It's all one structure, so you can't separate above ground and below ground. And the Supreme Court might actually buy that argument.

I learned of this proposed change, for which comments are open until August 21st, from the lever. And here's an article we'll put in the show notes that says airlines are lobbying to change airfare font sizes and it's going to cost you. While font sizes are a minor item in the non stop onslaught of the Trump administration to our rights and freedoms, I felt compelled not to give up even one pika of clarity to the airline lobbyists and let the Trump administration add another insult to injury. It's hot, which is to be expected, but also humid, which was a surprise because Greece wasn't humid. Look at this. Oh, wow. Look at the. I love how the ruins are just there. Like in the middle of apartment buildings.

We recently celebrated 40 years together. Officially married when California passed the same sex marriage in 2013. We were living in Santa Cruz, California for about 32 years. After taking care of his parents the last few years of their lives, his mom was COPD on an oxygen machine. Compounded with Alzheimer's, and his dad had stage four Parkinson's cancer and dementia. Mike showed so much courage and empathy, and we did the best we could. We were never taught how to care for Our aging parents, we had to learn as we went, trying to do our best to ensure they had the best care they needed. After their passing, we decided to sell our home and moved to Palm Springs. We are loving the community here of like minded folks in our blue bubble in our red Riverside County. Mike is my best friend and we've been through a lot over the years and we still lift each other up. For our 40th anniversary, you took me to Italy, Bongiorno. And when he asked where we were from, we would say California. That's my plan as well. If asked about how we could live in a country where the Orange menace was in the White House, Mike would hand them a trump sticker. They would laugh and ask for another to give to a friend. Okay, so that. Thank you, Dan. I'm gonna do this. I'm gonna bring those with me.

We went to Rome, Pompeii, Matera and Positano. Amazing. While each is incredible, going to Matera was a real treat. Not as well known. I've included some photos from Matera. Matera, Italy is one of the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities, renowned for its ancient sassi. a complex network of cave dwellings carved directly into the limestone hillsides of the the Basilicata region. Careful of my pronunciation here. Once labeled the shame of Italy in the 1950s due to extreme poverty, it's undergone a dramatic renaissance. Today, Matera is a celebrated UNESCO World Heritage Site and a breathtaking destination where travelers can dine, sleep and explore inside the ancient stone grottoes. Also included Pod Tariff. Loki. You can guess his breed. Siberian Husky. His blue eyes may give it away. We got him when he was five from a family member that could no longer care for him due to circumstances. But we had him till he was. He was a rescue from a puppy mill and was small for the full blood of his breed. Loki crossed the rainbow bridge last year after a brain tumor was discovered and impacted his quality of life. So we had to do the right thing. We miss m him terribly. And like many huskies, he had an amazing personality. And he loved to be very vocal about things that mattered. Keep doing the good work, AG and dg. Thanks for all you do. You're the best and you keep me sane. Look at this grotto. This is incredible. I've just saw a video about this city. Dan Dana. People been living there for 9,000 years.
