Yeah, the Mama Goldberg is something special, I always feel. I know some people are like, my mom's a nightmare. And I'm like, my mom, in my opinion, is a dream and often cures childhood wounds of the people she meets, like, just with one of her hugs. It's kind of amazing.
Yeah, she's pretty great. I got some good news today. So, on Sunday on the Midas Touch Network, I did a whole show about how the government and you know how I'm suing to get the Epstein files trapped training videos, the ones from March of 2025. And the government wanted an additional 90 days to file a motion for summary judgment. They were like, we're so backed up. We're so busy. Everybody's suing us. Get out your tiny violin. We can't do it.
We're.
We're down in staff. Yeah, because you took a Doge sledgehammer to the staff and then assigned, a third of who was left to ICE operations. So can you not, you know, we opposed that. We wanted it filed in 30 days. And Judge Barrel Howell just came back today and granted our order. Denied their order. So they have to file within 30 days.
Congratulations, my friend. Doing the work. The goddess's work, if you will.
Chipping away, step by step. Also, remember Friday when we reported that religious groups had asked a judge to hold ICE in contempt after an undercover agent accidentally dropped a recording device inside a church? Uh-huh In Minnesota, revealing an operation immigration that advocates say violates a court order that barred enforcement actions inside churches. Well, the judge just issued this minute order. DHS shall show cause in writing, filed on the docket on or before August 28, why they should not be held in contempt for violating the preliminary injunction. The clerk is directed to set the matter for a conference hearing concerning the matter at a suitable time on Friday, September 4th. So they have three days to answer for their actions, DHS and ICE, and there's going to be a hearing on September 4th.
Fantastic.
The preliminary injunction DHS violated, by the way, was the judge's February order that barred ICE from conducting operations in places of worship.
Got it. All right, this one's from NBC. President Trump on Monday hit back at Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who on Friday had announced he would retaliate against any new U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods. Writing on Truth Social that official presidential seal, Trump threatened to hit imported cars, trucks, automobile parts, and steel at 50% tariffs starting January 1st. Interesting how far out it is, isn't it? Cause maybe he doesn't want the American people to feel that fucking tariff before. The midterms, by the way, have fully implemented the increased tariffs on autos and parts could be the most disruptive for consumers and automakers.
Yeah. And, Bessant today did the same thing with sanctions on Iran. He's like, we're gonna. If you don't comply and open the Strait of Hormuz, we're gonna apply sanctions on you down the road.
That's so, you know, that's what they're doing right now.
Yeah. And everyone was like, why not just imp. Sanctions now? And they're like, what, you want me to blow up the entire economy? World economy now? Like, he literally said that.
So I'll gladly pay you Tuesday for a hamburger today, okay? Wimpy.

Very underrated film. All right, everybody, we have a lot of news to get to. Let's hit the hot notes. Hot notes, all right. From npr, the Supreme Court has paused a lower court's ruling that blocked key directives from Trump's executive order to restrict mail in voting for this fall's midterm elections in about two dozen states and Washington, D.C. but with the start of absentee voting for the midterms just weeks away, legal and practical hurdles loom over whether U.S. postal Service and other federal agencies can finish carrying out Trump's directives. I'm going to give you a hint here. They cannot. Well, they're not supposed to, and I'll tell you why in a second. Released Monday, the order marks the latest court action in the legal fight over Trump's March executive order, one of many efforts he's made to try to exert control over how elections are run, which states are supposed to run. As part of a separate but related lawsuit, the U.S. postal Service remains blocked from following Trump's mail in ballot directives under a nationwide ruling that was released Aug. 11 by U.S. district Judge Indira Talwani in Boston. The Supreme Court did not weigh in on the actual legality of Trump's executive order, which has so far not directly affected eligible absentee voters options to cast ballots by mail in June. In the other case, Talwani issued an earlier ruling that blocked key parts of Trump's order in the 23 mainly Democratic led states, plus DC that sued the administration. Trump's order calls for the DHS to develop state lists of adult US Citizens and for the Postal Service to obtain lists of eligible voters from states. Now, according to the order, the post office is supposed to deliver mail in ballots only to people on those Trump approved lists. All election officials would also be required to have certain barcodes on their mail ballot envelopes. The Postal Service has released a final rule for federal ballot mail in response to Trump's order. So that's on the Federal Register now.
All right, thanks, Allison. This is from the Post. President Donald Trump has claimed that the White House needs a massive new ballroom because it would provide him and future presidents with a secure, hardened facility. But former officials say that the argument fails to acknowledge that the presidential complex already has one. More than a decade ago, federal officials built a highly protected bunker embedded deep underground that can shelter the president and his top aides in a national security emergency. That's according to three former officials. Interesting. The facility, which was secretly completed during the Obama administration, can house dozens of people for up to multiple weeks. Two former officials said it buried more than 60. It's buried more than 60ft underneath the white House complex and built to withstand a nuclear blast. This is again from two of the officials ensuring the president and his team, they have a secure command center to run the country in times of extreme distress. Now, yeah, the bunker's existence, this is what the officials say it undercuts the Trump administration's emerging legal argument and the ongoing lawsuit over the $600 million ballroom complex's construction that the facility must be completed due to its significance for U.S. national security. Chief Justice John G. Roberts Jr. Issued an order Friday allowing the Trump administration to continue ballroom work in the short term as the Supreme Court weighs on emergency appeal in a lawsuit challenging whether the construction requires the approval of Congress, a US District judge in a federal appeals panel, they both ordered the administration to stop building the ballroom until lawmakers authorized the project. But the judge carved out an exception. Construction on the national security needs, such as a planned military complex underneath the ballroom, that can continue. On August court filings supporting the White House's case, Trump's top national security team urged the Supreme Court to allow the project to proceed. The construction, they said, comes as the president faces rising threats from foreign adversaries and terrorists. Alongside ah, advances in commercial drone technology that could more effectively target White House grounds. Trump officials argue the ballroom complex would provide essential security upgrades to the president's residence and help guarantee the US Government could continue functioning during a crisis. I'm sorry, is it even functioning right now? I don't fucking think so. The two former officials noted this same argument had been invoked two decades ago to construct the White House's existing subterranean bunker that is hardened against nuclear blasts and other threats. They questioned why the administration has suggested that the White House lacks such a secure location, including one that could help ensure a functioning government in national security crises. For decades, the White House bunker was limited to a small facility located in the basement of the East Wing, built during World War II to help protect President Franklin D. Roosevelt in case of an emergency. That site, known as Presidential Emergency Operations center, or the peoc, is where the Secret Service hurried Vice President Dick Cheney and First Lady Laura Bush out during the 911 terrorist attacks. The attacks on September 11th of 2001 can you believe it'll be 25 years? ALISON Mm Yeah, it's fucking wild. Prompted the White House to begin work on a much more secure facility. That's what journalist Ronald Kessler said, who referenced construction of the bunker in his 2018 book titled the Trump White Changing the Rules of the Game. The upgraded facility, he wrote, was completed during the Obama administration. It had months long food supply and is equipped with its own self contained airflow system. The existing site is buried deep into the Washington bedrock, accessible by a private elevator and built specifically to protect the president from a vast array of threats, including an attack from a weapon of mass destruction. Its specifications, the former official said it includes many of the safety protocols The White House is describing in an attempt to justify the new ballroom complex. The former officials also warned that the administration's abrupt decision to demolish the East Wing and expose what sat underneath could have itself created national security risks. Of course, because most of the world, at least we shouldn't know that there was a fucking bunker under that that was keeping the President and Barry, important people in the government, safe in a catastrophe situation.
Yeah, and I had no idea there was an Obama bunker, Bill. I didn't either, but apparently it was in Kessler's 2018 book. But, you know, that sort of flew under the radar. I had assumed the bunker that, you know, they tried to drag him to after, you know, during Black Lives Matter, that they tried to drag Trump down to, was the old World War II bunker. And apparently those are different things. Interesting, interesting. Yeah, that's. That is really fascinating that they're like, you already have a bunker that can withstand all this stuff for national security purposes. Donald Trump and John Roberts. What are you talking about? So we'll see if that pops up in any of those lawsuits. And this is big news. You know how sometimes we use bad Republican law for good things?
Like when Texas passed that law that allowed people to sue women for having an abortion. And then Colorado went on to use that same premise to allow people to sue conversion therapists after the Supreme Court gutted that state's law banning conversion therapy, which was brilliant.
Brilliant.
Well, as you know, in a case called Loper Bright, the Roberts court overturned the 40 year old chevron doctrine, which is basically the thing that allows agency experts, like scientists at the epa, for example, to use their expertise to interpret laws like the Clean Water act instead of leaving it up to the justices. Right?
Yeah.
Well, today the fourth Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that because the Supreme Court overturned the Chevron doctrine, the court no longer has to accept it. When the Board of Immigration Appeals says an immigrant's prior vacated conviction can get them deported, the immigration court is not part of the judiciary. That makes them an executive agency like the epa. So if an, immigration judge rules that an immigrant's prior expunged conviction can still get that person deported, the court doesn't have to listen to them anymore. As Aaron Reichland Melnick from the American Immigration Council explains, previously, even vacated or expunged convictions could still get someone deported. If an immigration judge, again that's an executive branch employee, determined that the conviction was vacated for reasons unrelated to a legal defect, the 4th Circuit says not anymore. This will allow some immigrants facing removal in the 4th Circuit to stay in the United States by pursuing post conviction relief. Now, under previous case law, when the Chevron doctrine was in place, even if prosecutors agreed that wouldn't matter unless it was vacated due to a legal defect with the original conviction. Because the Chevron doctrine is no longer in effect, the fourth Circuit no longer has to follow that case law that allows the courts to decide on their own the impact of a vacated conviction. So new rule in the fourth reason is irrelevant. A vacated conviction is not a conviction for immigration purposes. So something good? A silver lining.
Yeah. Collateral beauty, this bullshit. All right, this one's from the Guardian. This is really interesting and it needs to be covered. The mayor of Gary, Indiana has said it is unacceptable that thousands of residents in the city, they're still without power nearly two weeks after an August 11 storm known as a derecho brought 90 mile an hour straight line winds it down trees onto power lines. And this is a quote, we're at day 12 and 12 days is too long for families to be without power. Without power. We're in the middle of the summer, everyone. That means also no air conditioning for a lot of these places, eddie Melton, Gary's mayor, said in a video address on Sunday, adding that he is continuing to pressure the Northern Indiana Public Service Company, which is nipsco, to restore the city's power before the end of Tuesday. And I quote, 12 days is too long for parents to worry about their children, for businesses to lose revenue and for families to wonder when the relief is finally going to come. Today, I want the people of Gary to know this. I want you to know that I share their frustration. Okay? On Sunday, there were still more than 14,500 power outages in Gary. That number has been reduced now to 10,187 by Monday morning, according to the company. At the peak of the outages, 374,500 were without power. Most school students in Gary were unable to return to classes on Monday. Residents have filed a proposed class action lawsuit against nipsco that accuses it, of failing to trim trees that brought down the power lines. Meanwhile, on Monday, food critic and social media personality Keith Lee, Indiana Pacers basketball team star Tyrese Hilliburton and Salvation Army Ace Hardware and Gary city officials plan to co host a relief supplies event for locals outside the community's Roosevelt Pavilion. That's according to organizers. Organizers said Lee committed $15,000 in supplies for the event, which Halliburton matched by the way, to bring the total contribution to about 30,000. The other entities provided additional support. So this is insane. 12 days without power.
Yeah. And something they didn't seem to note here. Or, maybe I left it out when I was pulling out specific paragraphs. Eddie Melton, the mayor. Black man, Gary, Indiana. African American, population of approximately 76%.
Yep.
So if you're wondering why they haven't been rushing to restore power to Gary, Indiana, I think we can blame that on institutional and systematic racism.
Yeah, I would agree.
All right, up next from the Times, California's Attorney General Bonta has canceled a meeting with representatives of Paramount that was scheduled for Monday to begin discussing a settlement of the state's lawsuit seeking to block Paramount's proposed acquisition of Warner Brothers Discovery. Rob Bonta, The Attorney General called off the meeting late Sunday, accusing Paramount of acting in bad faith. What?
No. Shocking.
In a statement to the New York Times, Bonta, a Democrat, accused Paramount of leaking details of a meeting that the parties held on Friday. Quote, not only did Paramount leak the alleged substance of settlement discussions, but they misrepresented those discussions, demonstrating a lack of good faith. That's what Bonta said in a statement. And he went on to say, as soon as Paramount stops playing games and engages, sincerely, my office is happy to meet again. With trial scheduled for March, delays could cost the company hundreds of millions of dollars. Told you about those ticking fees that it must start paying to Warner Brothers shareholders if the deal is not closed by October. So looks like, Paramount's negotiating in bad faith and now a lot of people want this settlement. Like, I know Governor Newsom wants the settlement. The Democratic governor nominee, Javier Becerra, wants the settlement to go forward because, you know, we're losing money in the Hollywood area and filmmaking while this kind of plays out and everyone's unsure about what's going to happen. But Bonta is firm and he's saying, if you're gonna negotiate in bad faith, I'm gonna cancel the meeting. And you can say you're sorry and come back to me when you're, like, grown up and ready to actually negotiate this thing.
Yeah, we'll see what happens. This one's from the Times. A private arbitrator has ordered the Washington Post to rehire the opinion colonist Karen Attia, who was fired in September over her social media posts about the assassination of the conservative activist activist. I still struggle. Charlie Kirk. I'd also ordered the company to compensate her with back. Yes, Sarah Miller Espinosa, the arbitrator, said in a written decision Thursday that the Post, and I quote, did not have good and sufficient cause to terminate Missatia and violated its labor agreement, according to a copy of the decision shared with the New York Times by Masatia's lawyers. Quote, the Washington Post failed to establish the grievant engaged in gross misconduct. That's what Ms. Espinosa wrote in a statement. Masatia said that she hoped the decision sends a message to journalists and media institutions everywhere that freedom of expression is always worth fighting for. She said she was willing and I quote, to go back to her work at the Post, which she called one of the world's m most storied newspapers. She said this decision confirms what we've said from the start. I was doing my job as an opinion writer and this was wrongful termination, she said, adding that she was relieved to finally have that record set straight. A spokeswoman for the Post said that the company respects the arbitration process and declined to comment any further. The decision is a result of a year long fight between the post and Ms. Autia, who last year accused the company of violating its labor agreement and social media policy when it fired her for posts she said were within her purview as an opinion columnist. A clause in the agreement allows employees to submit disputes for arbitration. Lawyers for the Washington Post and Ms. Attia made their arguments before Ms. Espinosa in June during a hearing that included testimony from Ms. Attia. Adam O', Neill, then, by the way, that was an opinion editor at the Washington Post and Wayne Connell, the company's chief human resources officer. Azatia was represented by the Washington Baltimore News Guild and Democracy Defenders Fund. That's a nonprofit co founded by the lawyer Norman Eisen. In a statement, Mr. Eisen called the decision, and I quote, a landmark victory for one of our nation's crusading journalists.
Well, congratulations to Karen and Norm Eisen over at Democracy Forward, who helped her with this. It's just very good news for the First Amendment.

I'm not sure how many Beans listeners contributed, but for those who did, we helped dozens of families avoid unnecessary grief on the first day. Some of those funds were used to open the Maternal center of Excellence in Kono District, Sierra Leone. On February 14th of 2026. 27 women received care during opening day. 13 babies were born at the facility, including the facilities for C section helping a mother whose baby was in distress. Its neonatal intensive care unit admitted its first critically ill newborn, marking the beginning of Sierra Leone's first nicu. The center also handled its first ambulance referral and its first uncomplicated vaginal delivery. We're going to have a link to all of this, by the way, and Partners in Health overall. The first day showed that the center was not merely a new building. It immediately expanded access to life saving obstetric and neonatal services that had previously been unavailable in rural Kono. By the end of the day, it had already treated dozens of women and began providing specialized care for babies who might previously have had very limited chances of survival. To follow up on last week's Indiana voting zine, I wanted to shout out the Democratic candidate in Indiana House District 49 in and around Goshen, Indiana, Michelle Milne. Is it Milne or Milne do you think? Won the Democratic primary handily and she's taking on the Republican incumbent in an historically red district. I know Michelle personally and she makes me wish for the first time in my life that I lived in Indiana just so I could vote for her. She would make an outstanding state representative, though she is currently at a significant fundraising disadvantage. If you're able to support Michelle in any way, please, please, please do so. This is one of those districts where the Republicans often run unopposed and Michelle would represent such an important improvement over the anti choice, anti gay marriage incumbent. And first time rider in. I just wanted to share the story. Sorry if it's been shared already. A few weeks ago, a boat was found in Tacoma, Washington with dozens of cats. They were all rescued and they're available. Tacoma humane Society Rescue kitty are named sailor on the website.
Yeah, 60 cats. The photos of the cats, like, just wild. All on this boat, like just totally taking over and occupying the entire boat. I was like, boat cats. We were going to cover it on the. On beans talk, but I think some other breaking, news popped up that day and it just sort of got pushed back. But I'm so glad you wrote in about this anonymous, because these guys were so funny. Sailor cat Clover. Sailor cat Ada. Sailor cat Ponyo. We're going to have a link to where you can adopt any of these 60 Tacoma boat cats. And you will know them by their name. Sailor.

I'm catching up on the past week of the beans and there were a couple of episodes that prompted me to dig through our photos to share this photo of my wife and I in Villa Franc sur mer in July20. My ship was in Naples and my wife's ship had pulled in there. Her ship was relieving mine. We would not have seen each other for at least a year except for this 24 hour. It took longer for me to get there and back from Naples as the train ride was 14 hours each way. The second photo was taken last week while my in laws were in town. And it's of another of the Portland crows that was also mentioned in another episode. I hope Allison is feeling better after her procedure. I've yet to watch any of the Beans Talk episodes. and I'm listening to the audio while I get caught up on household chores. But be well to all the Leguminati. Oh, Villefrank Sur Mer.
