Allison Gill: To film next to it. But, they rented all those cars. Their watches aren't even there. It's like they had to admit all this in court, which is really funny.

Allison Gill: And their lawyers are like, oh, they weren't trying to trick anyone. You know, they're just obvious hyperbolic parody. And it's like, yeah, okay. Come on.
Dana Goldberg: Those little Capri pants are hyperbolic parody. The ones that get arrested?
Allison Gill: Yes, they were. Oh, my goodness. Girl, that's all I said when he. When I saw the picture with us. Girl. Girl. Allison Gill: Very, very good news, everybody. Wear your sunscreen. Yes. All right, we have a lot of news to get to today, so let's hit the hot notes. Hot notes. First up, from msnow. The sailor who jumped from the USS Abraham Lincoln this month in what his wife described was a suicide attempt is now facing disciplinary action from the Navy. That's according to his wife and charging documents reviewed by Ms. Now, the wife, who was granted anonymity to discuss sensitive disciplinary action, said her husband is facing non judicial punishment for violating articles of the Uniform Code of Military Justice. The charging documents, which were reviewed by Ms. Now show that the sailor's been accused of violating Article 83 for malingering, which is defined as a service member intentionally faking an illness or hurting themselves to get out of work. Can you believe that? And also Article 86, which is AWOL, absent without leave, which means the service member failed to be at their required place of duty without proper authority. It's pretty normal if you don't show up for your watch, regardless of the reason to be charged to awol. But this is an international story and you'd think maybe we should not do this. I don't know, maybe I'm crazy now. Anyway, Quote, I think they're insane for doing this to people who need mental help. That's what the wife told Ms. Now, yes, ma', am, I agree with you. Quote, instead of giving him help, this is just another huge stressor. The couple, who are both 19 years old and 3 and a half year old son, and they welcomed a brand new baby daughter in February. So she's what, six months old? While he was deployed and his wife said he repeatedly requested paternity leave and was denied every single time. Her husband jumped overboard Aug. 3, she said, and was medically evacuated and returned to San Diego on August 13, where he then spent five days at the Naval Medical Center, San Diego, Balboa, which is right down the street from me. During that stay, she said medical staff monitored his vital signs, but he didn't see a psychiatrist or therapist and he was told to report back to work immediately after his release. His first therapy appointment came on August 26, nearly two weeks after he arrived back in San Diego. The sailor's now facing non judicial punishment that's typically used by commanders to reprimand service members for minor rule breaking, but it also allows them to avoid court martial because that can result in an official conviction. The sailor will attend what's called Captain's Master, where a commanding officer will decide the punishment. According to the charging documents, the sailor could end up losing half his normal pay. The handling of the suicide attempt by the Navy and you know what, the story let me correct myself because the story said the sailor could end up losing half of their normal pay. I just want to make that correction. I'm not sure if that's the pronoun that the sailor prefers to use, so I just wanted to make sure I did that. The handling of the suicide attempt by the Navy is raising serious questions about how mental health is dealt with in the military, especially as deployments are hitting record lengths. And Dana, in a related story from NPR as the site of armed uniformed National Guard troops becomes ubiquitous in Washington, D.C. over the past year, one voice has been notably absent from the public discourse around the deployment, and that's the Guard members themselves. Quote, I'll say very frankly that the bad taste that this mission left in my mouth, it actually embarrasses me to be involved in any way. That's what one Guard member said who was part of the deployment for several months. Quote, I don't want to think about the National Guard. I don't want to necessarily discuss my affiliation with the National Guard. I don't want to fulfill my normal National Guard duties just because of the abuses of the National Guard in D.C. in this D.C. mission. That's what another Guard member said, noting that that isn't how he's felt for previous domestic deployments. Right. Just this D.C. thing. All were skeptical about the administration's original reason. All the ones all the Guard members who spoke to NPR were skeptical about the administration's original reason for the deploy to help with crime, despite a 30 year low in violent crime in the city. Quote. Now with it being a year, it's hard to feel like that justification holds any water. Said one Guard member. It feels like the Guard's just being exploited in a sense. Another said it feels more like a political stunt, pointing out the way the Guard has been inserted into certain narratives, like when they were ordered to patrol the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool following its faulty renovation. Quote, I hope there will be some accountability someday, probably after the president is gone, about why we were there and and was it worth it. But none of that's going to happen now. That's what the member said.
Dana Goldberg: Goodness, we do have more on military this is from the post days before the Army's top officer was abruptly fired earlier this year. He was advised by a fellow general now vying to replace him to stop the military's investigation into an unauthorized helicopter flyby of musician Kid rock's Tennessee estate. We saw a video of that. I know it's a stretch. That's from three people that were familiar with this matter. General Randy George, whoms defense secretary hegseth removed as the army chief of staff without any explanation, felt it was important to follow typical protocol and determine whether any safety regulations had been violated during that March 28th flyby. That's what all of these people are saying that they spoke to. Like many others, they spoke on the condition of anonymity because they're not allowed to talk about this. General Chris the army's number two officer told George that kegseth did not want the investigation to proceed as one person said. The two others said that George later confided in colleagues about the encounter with laniv and seemed troubled by it. George told them that Lana suggested it would be best if the review was scuttled. Yep. The revelation, which has not previously been reported, adds a new layer of understanding to kegseth's potential motivations for firing George on April 2nd. Kid Rock, that piece of garbage, whose legal name, by the way, is Robert Richie, is a vocal supporter of president Donald Trump, an avowed critic of many democratic politicians and causes, Calling him musician
Allison Gill: kid Rock in this story. Kind of hits me the same way when they call Jeffrey Epstein a disgraced financier.
Dana Goldberg: Yeah, he used to be a musician. Now he's just a piece of garbage.
Allison Gill: Next up from cbs, A state grand jury. This is insane. Found that the desantis administration, quote, misappropriated. Folks, the correct word is stole taxpayer money. When it diverted again, stole, I would say, $10 million from a Medicaid settlement into the hope Florida foundation, arguing that the transfer was, quote, part of a sophisticated scheme to fund political activities. That's according to a copy of the sealed grand jury report obtained by CBS news Miami. The grand jury report said the money, which was supposed to be used to provide health care for poor, was instead hastily passed through multiple shell organizations before eventually landing in bank accounts of the two political action committees and the Republican party of Florida. Those funds were then used in 2024 to defeat Amendment 3, the Citizen Initiative to legalize marijuana. Despite our finding that the money was misappropriated, we find insufficient evidence to charge anyone criminally. That's what the report concluded. But the reason why is important. Quote, nobody will take responsibility for deciding the 10 million in taxpayer money would go to Hope Florida, and no one had any memory of who made the decision. We recognize that that would be an impediment to criminal prosecution. So it's not that they didn't find a crime here. It's that everyone's obstructing the investigation.
Dana Goldberg: Right.
Allison Gill: Kind of like how they couldn't get conspiracy with the Trump campaign in Russia because everybody lied and obstructed anyway. That's just. It's frustrating. It's really frustrating. So while we can't prove who's responsible, we can plainly see that the taxpayer money was misused for political purposes, and we would like to see changes made to prevent this from happening again. That's their conclusion here, this grand jury quote. Here's some more. We find that James Uthmeyer, as the governor's chief of staff at the time of the settlement, was in a position of authority over those involved in settling the issue. That's what the grand jury wrote. So it looks like it could have been James Uthmeyer. They went on to say testimony identified as him having involvement in directing the money after it went to Hope Florida. And testimony also revealed that Mr. Uthmeyer's Keep Florida Clean, a political action committee, was the prime recipient of. Of the majority of that 10 million in taxpayer funds. He's now the Attorney General. Wow. the grand jury also concluded that Ashley Moody, Senator Ashley Moody, who was the Attorney General at the time, was aware of the plans to divert the 10 million to hope Florida, and she authorized her former chief deputy, John Guard, to sign the settlement agreement.
Dana Goldberg: These motherfuckers. I hope every one of them goes to prison eventually for all of this.
Allison Gill: The grand jury noted that Guard signed the settlement quote without conducting his due diligence to ensure the proper appropriation of taxpayer funds. So, m. Nobody is at fault. No one knows and remembers anything about it. And so that, you know, I guess that's not enough to press criminal charges. Plus, the attorney general is probably the number one culprit.
John Fugelsang: Yeah.
Dana Goldberg: Seriously.
Allison Gill: So who would bring these charges?
Dana Goldberg: All right, let's move over to Congress and elections. This is from the Post. Former staffer from Rep. Mike Collins. He's that Republican from Georgia. Shared images in June and July on his Twitter account of a swastika and one that depicts himself in Ku Klux Klan robes. Yeah, Ku Klux Klan robes.
Allison Gill: Mike Collins is the, Is he. He's the one running against Jon Ossoff. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Dana Goldberg: The im. By the way, I think this is, like. This is not the first time. Now, the images found in a search by the Washington Post.
Dana Goldberg: Follow other controversial actions and rhetoric from former Collins staffers and other Collins associates that have just dogged his Senate campaign. A number of people in Collins's orbit have been accused of having ties to white nationalists or making racist or anti Semitic comments. And the congressman's own social media presence has also drawn scrutiny. The ex staffer who posted the Nazi and KKK images, PRESTON Para. He's 24 years old. Interned for Collins for two months in 2024 before working as a contractor for his leadership PAC the next year. Overhaul PAC, that's what it's called. Paid para $7,700 for fundraising consulting in May of 2025. That's according to the Federal Elections Commission filing. Okay. Para, who recently described himself as, and I quote, a twink fascist - That's what we need - on his Twitter account until changing his biography and making his post private on August 24. In a Conservative Political operative whose consulting site touts his ability to marshal a network of influencers to boost Republicans, the Daily Mail reported this year that Para posted frequent crotch shots and a photo of himself that he captioned racist. What a piece of garbage.
Allison Gill: In one of the posts, he actually drew a swastika with the word twink. Like, twink, twink, twink, twink, twink. Like little twinks in the shape of a swastika.
Dana Goldberg: So like I said, he's a real fucking gem of a guy. And here's another one, by the way. Chuck Edwards. The Hill is reporting that North Carolina Rep. Chuck Edwards, also a Republican. Shocking, I know. On Wednesday issued a letter to fellow lawmakers denouncing the Ethics Committee report that found that he had engaged, and I quote, in persistent, unprofessional and inappropriate conduct toward what? Two female staffers. Is anyone surprised? Not just any young female staffers. And I quote, the report repeatedly relies upon interactions that it says could be interpreted as romantic, but something that could be interpreted as romantic in worlds. Apart from establishing an unwanted sexual advance, an affectionate friendship is not a sexual proposition.
Allison Gill: Oh, oh, oh. Yep, I actually wrote those words.
Dana Goldberg: yep. A gift is not sexual misconduct. A compliment is not sexual misconduct. Poetry is not sexual misconduct. Was it a lyric? not a lyric. A limerick. Now that's what the. That's what this letter said, by the way, to his colleagues, first obtained by notice. Oh, I hate it. And I quote, yep, socializing with a colleague is not sexual misconduct. Caring deeply about someone with whom you have worked and come to know for years is not sexual misconduct. Yet individual acts that were not themselves prohibited were gathered together, assign the most damaging possible interpretation, and then use collectively to support a conclusion far more serious than the underlying evidence. That's from Edwards.
Allison Gill: That is like the torture memos of sexual harassment. The torture memos were like, look, waterboarding by itself isn't torture. Electrifying somebody by itself isn't torture. Keeping somebody in a lit room 24 hours isn't torture. Playing loud music isn't torture. It's when you combine those things together. Yeah. That it's torture. So that's what he's saying here. He's like, look, writing a poem, that's not harassment.
Dana Goldberg: But when you put all the things together, it's harassment.
Allison Gill: It's extra harassment.
Dana Goldberg: Now, this letter, by the way, comes as the full House is preparing to vote on the Ethics Committee's recommendation to censure Edwards. The vote could be held as early as next week. And then we're going to the Texas Tribune. Democratic U.S. senate nominee James Talarico's campaign on Wednesday. And this is Glorious. Asked a court to unseal transcripts of a pair of years old depositions given by his opponent, Attorney General Ken Paxton, as part of a very messy securities fraud dispute.
Allison Gill: That's a nice way to put it.
Dana Goldberg: Yep. The petition filed in Collin county targets depositions Paxton sat for in 2019, 2022, as part of a legal clash that ensnared the Attorney General, his financial advisor, and his former business associates, North Texas businessman Charles Looper. No, Loper III. Charles Loper III, who oversees Paxton's blind trust, in 2016, accused an energy company called Unity Resources and two of its investors, Byron Cook and Joel Hochberg, of, defrauding him. Okay. The case centered in part on alleged security fraud, which Loper accused Cook and Hochberg of, launching a scheme to profit off a Unity investment fund. Cook and Hochberg, in return, accused Loper and Paxton of conspiring to sully their names because they were set to serve as key witnesses in a separate criminal securities fraud case against Paxton. And you know, this is in Texas because they use the term solidar names. In Paxton's separate criminal securities fraud case, Cook and Hochberg accused Paxton of misleading them into investing in a McKinney technology company without disclosing he'd be a paid commission for the recruitments. Paxton was indicted. Indicted everybody. In 2015, the year before Loper brought his lawsuit, prosecutors dropped the charges against Paxton. Before the trial in 2024 under a deal that required him to pay restit and take legal ethics courses. Curious if he ever did that. By the way, the depositions mark exceedingly rare occasions of Paxton being forced to answer questions about his conduct under oath. Through numerous since resolved legal and ethical scandals, Paxton has avoided giving any sworn testimony and I quote, the right of Texans to see these depositions. It matters more than ever. This is lawyers of Talarico, by the way. They wrote that in their court filing and went on to say existing public reporting suggests that Paxton's testimony raises substantial ethics questions. Texas have a right to know what Paxton said under oath in those proceedings and see the whole story before they go to the polls in November. I agree.
Allison Gill: I concur. I really do. I hope he gets them. We'll see what the Texas courts say. I don't know if it's federal court. I think it might be Texas court. We'll see what happens, but we'll keep an eye on it. I have an update for you on the ice agent who shot Sosa Selles and lied about it. Christian Castro, today, Thursday. Well, you might be listening to this on Friday, but Wednesday night, Thursday morning was the 90 day deadline. Right. That the governor had to sign the extradition warrant. Right. And he's supposed to, but he didn't. He just let the clock run out. So Christian Castro has been released from jail. He's free, but he's still got arrest warrant out for him. So I don't know if he's gonna flee to Mexico. I have no idea. Mexico probably would be happy to extradite him to Minnesota, but you'd have to get the feds involved in that extradition process.
Dana Goldberg: Yeah.
Allison Gill: So I don't know. And then Abbott gloated about it. He wrote on Twitter at 12:19 Thursday, taunting the state, taunting Minnesota.
Dana Goldberg: What a piece of shit.
Allison Gill: Yeah, he's an asshole. Hennepin County DA Mary Moriarty said Governor Abbott claims to be tough on crime. How is he tough on crime? By manipulating an extradition process that's not supposed to be discretionary to protect a man who shot into a house with children inside. Right.
Dana Goldberg: Garbage.
Allison Gill: Yeah. So we'll keep an eye. I don't know if they're gonna be able to find him and get him and bring him to justice. But Governor Abbott's an asshole. Yeah.
Dana Goldberg: So are these two that I'm about to talk about. This is from the Daily Beast. And, it's a federal court hearing in Miami on Thursday revealed that Andrew and Tristan Tate's long running display of hyper wealth was largely fabricated. This is according to the filings from their legal team. From their legal team. The disclosure matters now because prosecutors have cited the brothers supposed fortune as evidence that they pos serious flight risk while fighting extradition to the United Kingdom. So they were basically like, they have all this money, they have all this access. And the lawyers were like actually. And Andrew and his brother were like, oh. Now the revelation, what it could do is it shapes the judge's decision on whether the brothers remain in jail. And I sure hope they do. But it's also going to influence future proceedings in the UK and Romania where they face dozens of charges. Defense filings say that the brother's online person, complete with, like you said, Bugattis super yachts claims of uber wealth. They were exaggerated. They were rented or they were staged and modeled after the absurd bravado of who? Sasha Baron Cohen's Ali G character.
Allison Gill: Ali G. Booyukasha.
Dana Goldberg: Fucking crazy. The filings argue that Tate's most notorious catchphrases and boasts such as taunting critics with what colors your Bugatti were crafted to cultivate a cartoonish image of dominance rather than reflect real assets. And by the way, this has nothing to do with the fact that they trafficked people.
Allison Gill: Yeah. And abused women.
Dana Goldberg: I don't give a shit if you're poor or rich. This better not affect these damn cases.
Allison Gill: That's how they would, you know, lure
Dana Goldberg: these women, be part of this life.
Allison Gill: Now.
Dana Goldberg: The lawyers said the brothers routinely exaggerated their influence and wealth to millions of followers, portraying rented supercars and staged luxury as personal property. The filings directly address several high profile symbols of Tate wealth. Three hypercars featured predominantly in their videos. A, $2.1 million Aston Martin. Two Bugatti's valued at 5 million and 7 million were rented, not owned. And by the way, off or not you but off for people that are buying 7 million dollar cars. It's insane. Now the defense said these vehicles were props used to reinforce the brothers online Personas and should not be considered proof of substantial assets. Prosecutors also pointed to Andrew Tate's tour of the 41 meter Obsidian Blade super yacht as evidence of access to major financial resources. The defense countered that the yacht did not belong to the brothers and that they were paid to promote it on social media. Even their watch collection, long touted as worth millions of dollars, apparently is bullshit.

Federal prosecutors have argued that the brother self portrayal as globetrotting multimillionaires supports the case that they could flee if released. They cited Andrew Tate's past claims that he held multiple passports and could travel widely, as well as the brother's history of living abroad under investigation. And can we mention the fact that the President of the United States kept them out of trouble last time they came into this country? Maybe that should be taken under consideration.
Allison Gill: And also maybe the fact that they fled.
Dana Goldberg: Yeah.

Dana Goldberg: Yeah. They're not going to flee the country. You mean like they did last time? By the way. Independent legal experts say that question, that one question, whether the brothers present a credible flight risk is likely to dominate the judge's decision.
Allison Gill: I think they do. Whether they're rich or fake rich. You don't have to be Bugatti rich to flee the country. You can. You can be. You can have Bugatti rental money to free the. You know, to flee the country. You don't have to. Anyway. It's just ridiculous. But that's hilarious that they're begging, but we don't. But all of our. It's all fake. We can't flee. We're penniless, sad men.

Can I just say, my dad was a public school teacher and he always said the two hardest parts of the job were having to pay for your own chalk and, trying to schedule gender reassignment surgeries during school hours so parents couldn't find out the struggle is real. I'm glad we're talking about it. Thank you.
Allison Gill: Oh, yeah. Did you, by the way, CL said on the Jesse Waters program, where Jesse Waters is like, oh, you're gonna take my school kid and cut off his ding a ling? And. And Al Said's like, are you circumcised?
John Fugelsang: But that's the thing, right? That's the whole thing. Like, like this is. Whenever I hear them say, oh, Muslim headscarves, what a cruel and primitive superstition, said the circumcised Western man. I mean, the American Medical association came out in the late 90s and said, There really is no medical reason why you have to circumcise children. I know, it's an aesthetic thing. Some guys like helmets, some guys like anteaters. I'm not here to judge, but when they're talking about genital mutilation here, we call it religion. Right. We call it Christianity here.
Allison Gill: Yeah. And the other thing, by the way, doesn't exist. The other thing where we're chopping up children in schools, that doesn't exist.
John Fugelsang: Oh, that's not real. No. I heard the president say the word surgeries, and he would never lie to me, his followers. So I'm pretty sure they're out during these surgeries.
Allison Gill: It exists about as much as transgender women exist in the wnba. That's about how much that exists.
John Fugelsang: This happened because a couple of kids knew they were trans and knew it wasn't safe to talk to their parents. And, and God bless them, they found guidance counselors who would listen to them and give them dignity and decency. And that can't happen with authoritarian Christians. And that's exactly why they're doing it. That's why they're persecuting transgender people, because their Christianity is as phony as their patriotism. But like, you know, if our right wing MAGA friends didn't care about the lies that mothers and doctors are swaddling newborns and then murdering them in the delivery room, they're not going to care that, that they didn't care about the lies about Haitians eating pets. They're not going to be outraged that he's lying to them about more stuff. In fact, our Fox News friends, they appreciate the president takes time to lie to them so thoughtfully in ways that make them feel good inside and raise their dopamine levels. So who am I to judge?
Allison Gill: Oh, yeah, Fox News, who paid $787.5 million for lying.
John Fugelsang: I mean, when is a Democratic establishment going to talk about Fox News lying us into a war with Iran, Iraq rather, and Iran? Lying. The lies that that network conveyed about Barack Obama's citizenship. I mean, Sean Han has been lying to the American people for 25 years on the same channel. And we all take it as normal because news is allowed to lie.
Allison Gill: Yep. Yeah, they're entertainment programs. That's what it boils down to. Something I wanted to ask you about these conditions on the USS Lincoln, which is, apparently on its way home. It'll be home, I think, in November or October. Yeah, they'll be out for 10, 11 months by the time they make it back to San Diego. Not sure if they're stopping in any port on the way, but they're headed home, apparently. But they are now talking about the fact that that young man, a 19 year old who jumped off the boat, they're going to take him to court martial under Article 86 and another article. But one of them is AWOL, which makes sense. If you flee your duty station.
John Fugelsang: Fair enough.
Allison Gill: Fair enough. You're absent without leave. That's what AWOL stands for.
John Fugelsang: Can't dispute that.
Allison Gill: And, the other one, and this one gets me, is malingering, which is they're accusing this sailor of feigning mental health problems to get out of work.
John Fugelsang: Yes. Yeah. Then he's, he's 19.
Allison Gill: When you, when you're getting out of work at the, you know, on a ship at sea, you have to jump off the ship like that, like that. That isn't, that doesn't seem like malingering to me.
John Fugelsang: The government broke their commitment to him on his deployment.
Allison Gill: Yeah.
John Fugelsang: Right. The government is treating the terms of their deployment like Donald Trump treats marriage vows. And this young man is 18, 19, rather, but he's married, he's got kids, two kids, I believe, for a 19 year old. So, I mean, hey, this is, this is your demographic. Trump and his wife has said he was suicidal. You know, I understand that right now Instagram has been turned into a film festival for horrific Indonesian flood footage. But if you get a chance, folks, go, go Google some images, photographs of the food that's being served to our troops. While Donald Trump obsesses over a ballroom, while Donald Trump overdoses on gold leaf in redesigning the Oval Office. While, while, while Trump is trying to name things after himself or name things after America. The supplies are really getting low. Morale's incredibly poor. And just, just Google the photo set, are posting photos of it, look and see what they're being made to eat. Now, with the midterms coming up, I expect punitive mediocrity from Ptex and Donald Trump. They will try to act the way all bullies act, more manly than they really are and punish this guy for his own mental illness because that makes them look strong to other weak men.
Allison Gill: Well, it goes along with their comments that, oh, they can stay out longer, they, they, they should be fine, blah,
John Fugelsang: blah, blah, you know, so they're going
Allison Gill: to be this way, possibly have mental health problems when, you know, oh, yeah,
John Fugelsang: but, but again, that's, that's the tack they want to take towards our troops with the midterms coming.
Allison Gill: Perhaps if he had more testosterone, he wouldn't even have that.
John Fugelsang: That's all they need. They don't, they don't need to have their commitments met. They don't need to come home and see their wives and kids. They need testosterone shots to enjoy being on a boat with a lot of other guys more. I mean, if that's the messaging Republicans want to bring into the midterms, I can think of a few Democrats who will go along with it because they're are shitting on our troops now. And it would be so easy for Pete Hegseth if he was a man to perform as a government official. Who cares about these people? But he's, he's not a man. He's a bully. He needs to punch down. So you will see this Fox News prompter monkey completely try to humiliate this poor guy rather than do what a real man would do and show him compassion.
Allison Gill: Well, showing him compassion would have to admit that they did something wrong and they are not in a place where they're gonna do that so well.
John Fugelsang: So that's why Stars and Stripes is being penalized, because Stars and Stripes actually committed the crime of reporting the living conditions aboard the Abraham Lincoln. And that's why now they are trying to actively censor, not stochastically censor like they did with abc. They are trying to shut up Stars and Stripes. So again, let them abuse the military hard. There's three months to go.
Allison Gill: Yeah. A lot of other midterm messages. first of all, the tariffs with, Canada. Very bad idea heading into the midterms. And because he, you know, because Carney kind of won that battle, I think, and now is negotiating with, the EU for deals. Donald Trump, like, when he picks up and takes his ball to go home, he has to turn around and throw it one more time. So he's now officially, quote, unquote, changed the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America.
John Fugelsang: Beautiful. Beautiful. I mean, do you expect anything?
Allison Gill: Because it's a tantrum.
John Fugelsang: It's a tantrum. A tantrum is something a child does. This is little bitch behavior. I mean, this is just absolute little behavior by these men. And I mean, no one's surprised. Like, he's so mad. He wants to rename. Like, look at gas at $4 a gallon. We can't get out of this war in Iran. I mean, troops are jumping off the boats because the food's so bad and the country's cracking up. And Man Baby is just helping Democrats. He's writing ads for Democrats at this point. Like, if he's going to be allowed to name things, rename things because he feels like it, and rename the Kennedy center, which was only named to honor a president who had changed.
Allison Gill: Now he's. Now that he can't rename it. He wants to tear it down.
John Fugelsang: Wants to tear it down because he can't put his name on it. I mean, this isn't like. I mean, this was done for the President by a grieving nation after his murder. And this child wants to put his name first before the guy who got murdered and had the center named after him. Let him keep on doing this, man. These guys are going to spend the rest of their lives, Alison, denying they ever voted for Donald Trump. You know it. They're going to. They're going to be like the Bush shady guys. They're going to. They'll. In 2016. Yeah. But after that, no, they're going to spend the rest of their lives denying they were blindly obedient to this guy. And I just. I've Never seen a Republican caucus working this hard to get Democrats elected. I want to say how nice it was to be in Europe for nine days in Stockholm and London, because it's like Bush years. You tell people you're Canadian and they're wonderful to you. It's just great. Highly recommended, folks.
Allison Gill: Well, let's talk about. But let's talk about something else, before we get out of here, because I think everyone needs their spirits lifted. We've had a tough week of iconic people leaving this earth. And I wanted to get your thoughts on Tim Curry and Dolly Parton.
John Fugelsang: Well, for Tim Curry, just such a terrific, terrific actor who a lot of people are saying he never had a second great role. But I don't think that's true. I mean, on Broadway he was nominated for Tonys for Amadeus, for My favorite Year for Spamalot. And, you know, I think of Pennywise the Clown.
Allison Gill: I think of Muppet Treasure island.
John Fugelsang: It. Treasure. Muppet Treasure island, it. Clue the movie, Home, Alone Two, you know, and he was just a guy who had this one iconic role that kind of launched him and haunted him his entire career. But he was so funny. I mean, as Rooster and Annie. He's him and Carol Burnett together with Bernadette Peters. It's the only watchable thing about that film. He's on fire in it. So I'm sorry he suffered so much in his later years. did a lot of great voiceover work too. But, God blessed him, Curry. And I think it's great that there's this outpouring of love for him. But, you know, poor Farrah Fawcett died. I remember, like, the day after Michael Jackson and was completely overshadowed. And I fear that's going to be the case because there's not a lot of people like Dolly Parton in terms of celebrity, but also in terms of altruism, in terms of songwriting. And as many people have said, you know, the last person alive that everybody loved, she. We talk about the hits, but as a songwriter, they haven't really talked about how beautiful she is as a lyricist. I mean, Bob Dylan loved this woman. Bob Dylan covered Coat of Many Colors. Willie Nelson covered her, and the Whitney Houston song gets all the acclaim. But you gotta listen to Dolly Parton's covers of other artists work. She released a rock and roll album a year and a half ago that, is astonishing.
Allison Gill: She does a cover on that. She got a Grammy, I think.
John Fugelsang: Yeah, she did. She does a cover of Princess Purple Rain that is just the best thing you've ever heard. I'm gonna make it the next opening theme on our show. I mean, her cover of Princess Purple Rain is better than Springsteen's. Her cover of Bob Seger's Night Moves is like hearing the song again for the first time. She does a cover on this album. It just came out of Let it be with McCartney and Ringo doing backup for her. That's how admired and loved this woman was. I mean, 100 million records, 11 grammys, lifetime achievement awards from the Country Music association and the Grammys. But honestly, the greatest thing she did.
Allison Gill: And people are finally talking about 322 million books.
John Fugelsang: Yeah, 304 million, I believe. And she founded this in, in the 90s. And you know what she did for native kids? I mean, there's 95 different native tribes that she gave free books to once a month. And kids who live on reservations don't have bookstores. Those aren't things. Dolly Parton, yeah, she got a lot of, A lot of books into a lot of kids hands, but she got books into native kids hands. And when it wasn't popular, she stood up for trans people and for trans children when she sure didn't have to. Show me another country artist that brave. You know, just, just eight years ago, she removed Dixie the. From her Civil War themed dinner attraction because. Because From Dolly Parton's Dixie to Dolly Parton Stampede. Because she could read the room and she cared about her heritage, she cared about Southern culture, she cared about Tennessee, but she cared more about decency. Dolly Parton was what we call a Jesus Christian. And I talk about this on your show all the time. And wherever I go, you got these Christians who think you're supposed to follow the Bible. Bible, where you're supposed to follow your church, or no Christian's supposed to follow Christianity. That's complete. Christians are supposed to follow Christ, the character in the Bible that they worship, and then ignore. Dolly Parton was a Jesus Christian. She gave away so much of her own money, but also just in terms of standing up for the marginalized. Dolly Parton defended Black Lives Matter when no one in the conservative side would do it. Dolly Parton was someone who, who came out in favor of, of, of treating trans people with dignity and equality. And I mean, she didn't need to do any of it. So it's like to see an artist be this mourned. Yeah, the air goes out of the room. But it's, it's not just because she was a great singer. The, the, the love that she. And the Love for conservative people. She never hated conservative people. She was so much better than so many liberals. I know because, I mean, I'm friendly to him too, but not as friendly as her. She didn't ever back down from her positions. But like, like she just very politely refused two times to get a Kennedy Center Honors award from Donald Trump. He wouldn't do it. God bless her for it. Did never trash Trump. It's not her way. Just said no. And she made her opinions known that way. So I mean she's going to be remembered.
Allison Gill: She had already had a Kennedy center honor earlier, right?
John Fugelsang: Well, yeah, but he was trying to. But he was. I forget. I'm so sorry. If it wasn't Kennedy center. The Presidential Medal of Freedom, perhaps.
Allison Gill: Oh, that's right.
John Fugelsang: That's right. Yeah. Forgive me. He's trying. I'm very jet lagged. and by the way, in Sweden I, I passed for Tammy. So like I, it was very exciting. But no, I think that. Please listen to her music. Please everyone, just. There's so there's six decades of great, great songs and her covers of other people's work has. Her cover of Tom Petty's Southern Accents that was on the tribute album a couple years ago was just gorgeous. Better than Johnny Cash's cover of it. So, you know, she, she became an ambassador for the Great Smoky Mountains national park and she created Chicanahay, the land of blue smoke, using the phonetic rendering of the Cherokee name for the Smokies, Chicanehay. So I do this indigenous segment on my SiriusXM show every week with Simon, Moya Smith of the Nation and Julie Francella. You should book them on your show. They're great. But they, we stood an hour today where they were just talking all about how much all the reservations love her, how Dolly the book lady is someone that they all know. And this was not someone who would like show up at a native event and be photographed. This is someone who doesn't like making statements about issue. She was putting books in kids hands. Her imagination library hit 92 native communities in 2002. I mean, imagine you're a native kid and there's a book coming for you once a month. It's never been done before. That's why the, the, you know, native community is really in mourning for her. And and it's just so moving to see that's how many. And, and you know, just look at the African Americans who've come out with their love and the gay folks who come out with their love for her and the liberals who come out with their love for her. It's really, really true. And it's something we can all do. You know, use the talents you have to make the world a better place and then stand up for people who need it and smile while you do it.
Allison Gill: Yeah, it's interesting. It's an interesting dynamic to see everyone agree on the, stuff that we're trying to push on one side of the political aisle, you know, that it's just embedded deep in a human soul, of course. Giving and caring and taking care of the poor and taking care of the needy and taking care of others and not become. Not. She could have been a billionaire several times over.
John Fugelsang: Could have been a billionaire. Could have been. But, like, that's the beauty, right? Like the, the Christianity, just to get a little lofty. Jesus comes out in Matthew 25 and says it, individuals. The week he's arrested, two days before he's arrested, he. He gives the parable of the goats and sheep, and he says, individuals and nations at the end of time will be judged by how they did four things. And it's take care of the poor, take care of the sick, welcome the stranger, and take care of those in prison. It's all about how you care for the less fortunate. This is the guy Christianity's named after. And he comes out and says, he doesn't give a. About how often you go to church or how much money you give, or how much you scream at women outside clinics or how much you were cruel to trans children. No, you will be judged individuals and nations by how you cared for people less fortunate. That's the only metrics Jesus gives the whole time. And conservative Christianity has been 1700 years since the Roman takeover. Ignoring this and talking about how we've got to protect Christian civilization. And that's why when someone comes along who is all about the light and the love, like Dolly Parton. No, dude, that's just what real Christianity was supposed to be about. I know it looks weird because of what we've seen on TV all our lives, but she modeled it. And she makes me want to be a better person and a better country artist, which I need some work, but.
Allison Gill: Yeah, we need a little work on that.
John Fugelsang: Look at all the jokes she had to deal with about her. Her cup size for decades and how she just. She just used it as one of her things. She didn't act with shame. She didn't get angry about it, didn't play victim. She incorporated the jokes about that into her own shtick. And it's like, yeah, she showed us all how to do it with resiliency. And, and it is worth pointing out like, she, she loved her husband. He just died a few months ago. And, and she just, you know, this happens so often with folks. My grandfather went 60 days after his wife, so. And God bless Dolly. And I'm sorry. And I hope her suffering wasn't too bad and I hope that she's just in a place of joy right now because she really deserves it.

Dana Goldberg: All right, next up from Brandy Pronoun she and her hello friends. It's been a week. Losing Dolly hits so close to home. I'm from Tennessee and my mother was a mix of Goldie Hawn, Mommie Dearest, and Dolly Parton. Her Dolly side, that was my favorite. When she passed four years ago, I inherited her car. My brother insisted on riding back in it with me on my return to Maryland on, our 14 plus hour trip, we found a Dolly CD in the glove compartment and played it on repeat the entire way. Singing along to that CD was the best time I ever had with my brother. When I heard Dolly had passed, it was like I was losing my mother all over again. And the tears started flowing. But then I started thinking about the trip home with my brother, and it just made me smile. Laughter through tears is my favorite emotion. Another lovely gift through this moment was hearing about Tennessee trying to make 9:25 dolly day. 9:25. That's my birthday. I will celebrate it whether it passes or not because, duh, Dali is such a light and we will never forget her.

Dana Goldberg: There's a good chance you know a lot of those things more than I do. Podpet tax. We lost our Corazon Chihuahua four years ago as well as it took a while for us to be ready for another pet, but the time finally came. Here is Meredith. You can guess her breed. She's incredibly smart. She's three months old and can sit. Move a little to the left, move a little to the right. Shake high five, lay down, roll over, crawl, fetch, and actually bring back the ball. Give kisses. Is crate drained and house broken? Oh, my God. I just saw her fucking picture.
Allison Gill: I know.
Dana Goldberg: My mind is blown. We may be able to teach her to do our taxes. She's incredible. I've included a before and after of her first haircut, but she looks like she's ready for kindergarten. Anywho, hugs from afar all you have. Love, Dolly and Tim Curry. Such spectacular humans breed is under the slow bone.
Allison Gill: That looks like a golden doodle to me.
Dana Goldberg: Look at this. But it looks like a little guy.
Allison Gill: What's a puppy, right?
Dana Goldberg: Well, I think that's a pup. Oh, yeah, I guess that's true. I don't know.
Allison Gill: Three months old. Yeah. Yeah, that's a. That's a very, very young puppy. Cute. Let's see. Yeah, it's a goldendoodle. Mini goldendoodle.
Dana Goldberg: Look, it is a little guy. You're right.
Allison Gill: Like, it looks a little small.
Dana Goldberg: Oh, my God. That's ridiculous. that is insanely cute. You know what I heard, and someone can tell me if this is wrong. Tim Curry died on the same day as Dolly, and his team said to hold the announcement because he didn't want to take anything from hers. That is fucking generosity. Even after you are gone.
Allison Gill: I was wondering if that was the case. I knew they died on the same day and I was wondering if it was.
Dana Goldberg: From what I heard, Tim's. Tim Curry's team said, don't announce it yet. Oh, wow.
Allison Gill: Yeah, that sounds like him.
Dana Goldberg: Yeah, it sure does.
Allison Gill: All right, next up from anonymous pronoun. She and her. Good morning, AG and dg. Thank you for keeping me sane in these crazy times. I look forward to your daily take on the news and your occasional offhand snarky comments. They bring me life, make me smile. My submission is a story that makes me giggle each time I think of it. Several years ago, my brother in his 50s, my mom in her 80s, and I in my 60s, were attending mass at my mom's hometown. The priest's sermon included a story recalling his encounter with someone at a local coffee shop. The priest was surprised that the man wanted to discuss the Spanish Inquisition. I leaned over to my mom and tapped my brother on the knee and whispered, nobody expects the Spanish Inquisition. My brother lost it, and I thought my tiny 5 foot 1 mom was going to drag us both to the children's cry room for causing a ruckus. In case you didn't catch it, we're huge fans of Monty Python in my family. Our British mom introduced her five children to the wonder of Monty Python in our childhood. Oh, lucky, lucky. We had to find it through our friends, you know? for my pet tax, I submit a picture of Blue, a Russian blue kitty who I inherited from my mom. He's my little house panther and considers it his job to escort me to every room in My home. Does he remind you why you went in there? Because that would be exceedingly helpful if I had one of those cats. I also submit a picture of our German shepherd in the middle of a shallow stream in Colorado while on vacation. Most people looking at this picture see a beautiful dog in a gorgeous setting. But we see someone who's thinking, you better sleep with one eye open tonight, loser. She was not amused.
Dana Goldberg: Oh my God.

Tim founded Seattle's Real Change street newspaper and led the organization for many years. It gives those experiencing homelessness an Opportunity to sell papers and earn money, but was also known for its award winning writing. Under Tim's leadership, Tim now runs Shmear Campaign, delivering fresh bagels and cookies in the Seattle Tacoma area. Go Tim.

Allison Gill: The good news part of this is it's still a travelogue. My adult daughter was able to accompany me on a work road trip to Pittsburgh a few weeks ago. We got off the interstate going through West Virginia both ways. I'd never spent any time in the state before now, and what struck me was the amazing physical beauty and the obvious abject poverty. As a serious hobby photographer, I thought simultaneously of Ansel Adams and Dorothy Lange. The photos are one, of the confluence of the Bluestone National Scenic river and the New river south of Hinton. And two, the sculpture of the Mothman cryptid in Point Pleasant. Thanks for the shows and the community that you've built. That is beautiful. And look, there's. There he is. Mothman.
