And I'm going to give a content warning here because this is just horrible and horrific. It's nightmare fuel. Federal immigration officials quietly received permission from a judge in recent weeks to force feed a detained Cuban hunger striker inside a Texas detention center, including with the use of a rare non consensual surgical procedure. That's according to court records. The the man is likely the 19th hunger striker in ICE detention where the agency has had an application approved to conduct involuntary medical procedures since January of 2025. His rising number of cases under the second Trump administration has alarmed advocates amid wide ranging accusations of mistreatment inside facilities nationwide. Now, court orders from the Southern District of Texas Federal court seen by the Guardian. They suggest ICE followed through with a force feeding via a nasal tube on the Cuban man in August. Since agency officials successfully requested this week that the court order be extended. He's currently detained at the Montgomery ICE processing Center, which is, of course a privately run detention facility near Houston. The Department of Homeland Security, the parent agency of ice, as we know, said on Thursday evening the man had resumed eating and drinking again and was not being force fed. The DHS didn't answer whether the man had broken his hunger strike this week after the latest court order, or how many times he'd been force fed before the new order had given ICE permission to operate on him to fit a surgical feeding tube without his consent. The Guardian is not naming the man because efforts to contact him have been unsuccessful. Like in all force feeding cases, the majority of his court records are sealed, concealing many details from the public. Now, the secretive practice of force feeding inside detention centers has been widely condemned by human rights organizations as torture. Involuntary medical procedures in response to hunger strikes and detention are often painful and traumatizing. During a prolonged hunger strike, ICE will request permission from a federal judge to conduct force feeding, forced hydration and other measures. Typically, after a judge approves the request, detention center guards hold down the hunger striker while medical staff forcibly insert a tube through the person's nose and down their throat and pump nutritional liquid into their stomach. But in this latest case in Texas, ICE also received permission to force feed the Cuban hunger striker through a percutaneous endoscopic gastronomy tube insertion. This is a surgery in which medical staff make an incision in the person's abdomen and insert a tube that remains in place indefinitely until it is surgically removed again and pump liquid directly into the stomach. This procedure has not been previously identified in other force feeding cases reviewed by the Guardian. Quote, the cruelty of the extreme tactics at ice's disposal to end lawful protests, including forcibly cutting into a protester's body to insert a tube in their stomach, underscores the horrors happening outside our view in ICE detention centers. That's Savannah Kumar, a staff attorney at the American Civil Liberties Union in Texas. She went on to say ICE's brutal use of involuntary medical procedures on hunger strikers demonstrates how degrading conditions have gotten in these hidden places, which is often exactly what hunger strikers are protesting in the first place. Last month, the Guardian published a series of stories about the extent of ICE's force feeding practices under the second Trump administration, with the agency getting the green light to perform involuntary medical procedures in 18 hunger strike cases, and the latest being the 19th. All right, next up from TIFF in Ohio, the registered Republican arrested for forcing his way toward Democratic gubernatorial candidate Amy Acton while carrying two pistols and a Taser, is the brother of a Republican operative who gave more than 10 grand to Amy Acton's opponent, Vivek Ramaswamy. Now Patrick Havas, 38, of Canfield, Ohio, was arrested Sunday on the Mahoneg County Democratic Party tent at the Canfield Fair after authorities said he pushed through a crowd toward Amy Acton and knocked multiple people to the ground. His brother, Andrew Havas, a Republican operative and registered state house lobbyist whose political activities became a statewide issue earlier this summer after his criminal history surfaced. The Daily Beast also independently reported the sibling relationship Sunday evening. The family connection adds a new layer to an incident already drawing national attention, but there is currently no evidence that Patrick Havas's actions Sunday were connected to his brother Andrew or his political activity. His contributions, for example, to Ramaswamy or Acton's previous criticism of his brother's contributions. Law enforcement has not publicly announced a motive yet. Ohio State Highway Patrol troopers intercepted Patrick Havas after he forced his way through a crowd toward Amy Acton, according to OSHP statements reported by the Washington Post. Havas knocked down multiple fairgoers while trying to get toward Dr. Acton and was found to be in possession of a Taser and two pistols. The incident came less than two months after Acton publicly criticized Ramaswamy over campaign contributions from Patrick's brother. Acton directly criticized Ramaswamy for accepting the money after Andrew Havas's criminal history became public. Quote Ohioans deserve leaders who exercise good judgment and who put integrity first. I find it appalling that Vivek Ramaswamy accepted over $10,000 from Andrew Havas. Andrew Havas had also served as US Senator John Husted's volunteer Franklin county campaign chair before resigning in July. After that news came out, NBC News asked Husted's campaign about a 2009 guilty plea. Andrew Havas, who was 22 at the time, was originally charged with sexual misconduct with a minor in a case involving a 15 year old, according to court records previously reviewed by NBC. That charge was later reduced to misdemeanor assault, to which Havas pled guilty in 2009, and he was sentenced to just 90 days in jail, fined and ordered to have no contact with the minor. Authorities have not publicly identified a motive for Sunday's incident, as I said, and no evidence has emerged connecting Patrick Havas's actions to his brother's political activity or his campaign contributions or, like I said, Acton's previous criticism of Andrew. So that's the latest we have on that. And next up from the Associated Press, Nepal held a day of mourning Monday to remember those killed in the August 26 floods with flags lowered at government offices and families concluding mourning rituals. Monday was the 13th day since the flooding, which killed more than 1300 people in Nepal and Tibet and left some more 5000 missing, including foreigners. And that's according to Nepal's Disaster Management Agency. In predominantly Hindu Nepal, mourning periods last 13 days, during which close family members stay home and relatives visit to pay their respects. Rituals are held on the final day to pray for the souls of the departed. several people whose relatives remain missing perform symbolic funerals. Cremation is an important final rite in Hindu tradition, and performing a ceremony even without the bodies of their loved ones did provide some families with a sense of spiritual release. Just a horrific, unimaginable tragedy. Next up from the website of Jasmine Crockett. Congresswoman Jasmine Crockett, ranking member of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Oversight, is demanding the Department of Justice investigate an alarming pattern of black Americans found hanging from trees across the country. In a letter to Attorney General Todd Blanch, an assistant attorney general for civil Rights, Harmeet Dhillon Crockett called on the DOJ to use its nationwide law enforcement capabilities to examine whether deaths that have been treated as isolated incidents and ruled deaths by suicide by state and local authorities may instead reveal a broader pattern of racial animus or systemic investigative failures. Quote these images we're seeing of black bodies hanging from trees and other structures across the country should shock the conscience of every American. That's what Congresswoman Crockett said. And she went on to say, given our nation's horrific history of racial terror and lynching, we cannot simply look the other way when black Americans are found dead under circumstances that demand answers. Every one of these cases deserves to be taken seriously, investigated thoroughly and examined in the context of what's happening across the country. Crockett also highlighted concerns that law enforcement personnel themselves may be implicated in some cases. The letter cites a report finding 23 possible modern day lynching cases involving police or correctional officers and highlights recent revelations concerning racist conduct within the Senatobia Police Department in Mississippi. Quote America spent generations allowing black people to be lynched while institutions with power to intervene stood by and did nothing, crockett said. We cannot repeat that history. The DOJ has the authority, the resources and the responsibility to determine whether these deaths are isolated tragedies or evidence of something far more sinister, and I'm demanding that they use them. Next up from the Associated Press, the far right Alternative for Germany party surged to a resounding victory in a regional election on Sunday, but fell short of winning a majority in its quest to form the country's first far right state government since, you know. When the party of Germany's unpopular leader, Chancellor Friedrich Merz, slumped to a disastrous result in the eastern state of Saxony Anhalt, the anti migration and Russia friendly alternative for Germany's candidate for governor said, we have written history and the party had a clear mandate to govern. You m won the region but not the I don't know if that's a clear mandate. Ulrich Sigmund, 35, told public broadcaster ARD that voters had sent a signal that things cannot carry on like this. He said a very good campaigner for us in this election campaign was Friedrich Merz. That's the opposition alternative for Germany, also known as afd. They were seeking an absolute majority in the state legislature to govern alone and overcome the so called firewall of mainstream parties refusal to work with AfD. Final results showed AfD falling three seats short with 39 lawmakers and an 83 member parliament. Sigmund said it wouldn't engage in games such as minority government. But it wasn't evident how its divided opponents could assemble any stable government without it. A first state government would be the biggest prize in the anti Migration Party's 13 year history at a time of widespread discontent with a national government that has yet to persuade voters that it can get the country's sluggish economy moving. Whether or not AFD ends up governing. The result is a blow to Mertz, whose center right party has led Saxony Anholt for 24 years. Unlike other countries in Europe, modern Germany hasn't yet had a far right or right wing populist party leading a national state or major city government. AfD is the biggest opposition party in Germany's national parliament and is strongest in the formerly communist and less prosperous east where Saxony Anhalt is located. Its regional branch. And Saxony Anhalt is one of several classified as a proven right wing extremist group by the domestic intelligence agency which points to members denigration of migrants from Muslim countries, among many other things. The party talks of remigration. That's a politically charged term for the deportation of immigrants. Its leader in a neighboring state appealed two convictions for knowingly using a Nazi slogan. AfD won 43.8% of the vote, more than double its showing five years ago in a region of 2.1 million people west of Berlin. That's far ahead of Mertz's Christian Democratic Union which polled 17.2%, losing about half its support and won 15 seats. The Center Left Social Democrats polled 9.3%, the Greens 8.9% and the Left Party 8.6%, winning eight seats apiece. The BSW Party, which has said it wouldn't elect either Sigmund or incumbent Stephen Schultz as governor, but criticizes the firewall against AfD, took 5.3% five seats. Now, turnout was extremely high, 77.8%. AfD appeared to have won over many people who didn't vote at all five years ago. All right, we need some better news. We need some lighter news. And here it is from the Daily Beast. And a bit of sweet revenge. Stephen Colbert and his canceled Late show pulled off a pair of surprising wins on the first night of the Emmys. On Saturday. The Late show with Stephen Colbert won outstanding writing for a variety series, beating out Jimmy Kimmel Live and last week Tonight with John Oliver, which has taken home the statue for the past 10 years in a row. The program's digital companion series, Colbert Before Air also pulled off an upset, winning outstanding short form, Comedy, Drama or variety series. The CBS show picked up additional hardware during the ceremony, including outstanding directing for a variety series, outstanding picture editing for a variety programming segment, and outstanding technical direction and camera work for a series. Quote, I'd like to thank all those who kept late night going. John Oliver, Jimmy Kimmel, super important institution in this country. That's Tom Purcell, the Late Show's executive producer. and he said that as he accepted the writing award. Keep the flame burning, guys. For Colbert before air, the win was particularly notable. The digital series has produced only about 10 episodes over the past year, with installments running just two to four minutes apiece. Yet the bite sized show managed to beat out several more established short form contenders for the Emmy. The wins give Colbert's final season an early boost heading into the main Primetime EMMY Awards on September 14, when the late show will compete for outstanding talk series against the Daily Show. Last week Tonight With John Oliver, Saturday Night Live, and Jimmy Kimmel Live Now, Saturday's ceremony was the first of two Creative Arts Emmys events being held ahead of the main broadcast. The first night focused largely on variety, reality and nonfiction, while the second night covered additional script and craft awards. The ceremonies will be combined into a televised special airing September 12 on FXX, while the main Emmys will air September 14 on NBC and Peacock. So congratulations to Stephen Colbert. Yesterday, I was grinding in the yard and could hear my neighbors having a party. The husband over there has always come over my yard to offer me something nice. Garden veg, felitas, big, ass beer. So I knew if they saw me, he'd call me over to eat. I wanted to get some work done, so I hid in the other part of the yard and worked there, but I was caught. He poked his head around the corner and said, come eat. So I did, and it was great. As usual, awesome neighbors, awesome food. What I call a good old fashioned Waukegan love letter. Pixar Waukegan love letters in the form of tasty neighborhood yums. And me at the Botanic Garden with castor bean plants and my wild, unruly castor beans at the crib. Let's go, Waukegan. All right, next up, Julie Pronoun. She and her. I loved that Allison suggested people volunteer to work elections, and there's often a need, and it's a fascinating opportunity. I've been working elections for eight years as my civic extracurricular and had no clue that A, I would last so long, or B, I would enjoy it as much as I do. Please heed her advice and call your local election officials to see if volunteers are needed. But I'd like to submit an important correction on Friday. It was implied, due to a misinterpretation of a News story, that ICE's request of a voter history with voter rolls means they were requesting a record of who had voted for whom in the various elections. Thankfully, that's not something yet, and hopefully forever and the powers that be have access to to via, voter rolls. Okay, our elections are still by secret ballot, meaning that no one is able to infer who we voted for beyond what they might rightly or wrongly conclude from the party we're registered with, if any. The voter history that ICE seems interested in is actually a listing of which specific elections various voters have voted in. For example, I've voted in every election since the 80s. My husband has not voted since the early part of this decade. Grrr. A voter history would indicate that, but not who we marked on our ballots. Okay, my POD pet tariff.
