Episode Transcription

msw media. Hello and welcome to the Daily beans for Wednesday, October 14, 2026. Today, Kimberly Guilfoyle is out. According to the new White House press secretary, who stumbled embarrassingly through her first appearance at the podium, the Supreme Court will take up a case to decide whether Doge is subject to the Freedom of Information Act. DHS is separating migrant children from their parents, then labeling them unaccompanied minors. Judge Reyes has extended her order blocking Trump from making any changes to the D.C. municipal Golf Course. The Talarico campaign actually provided timestamped video surveillance tapes to. To the New York Times to prove that he was never in Ohio. Anthropic says AI could replicate itself in home devices within months. And a judge blasts Elon Musk for lying about a, FEMA employee paying for luxury hotel rooms for migrants in New York City. I'm Alison Gill.

And I'm Dana Goldberg.

Hello, my friend. Happy Taint of the week to you and to you.

Signal Awards, last day, everyone, everyone tell. This is one of those things, you know, when we're like, get out and vote down ballot. Take everyone we know with you. Also, maybe just text this to a few friends and be like, do me a solid. These girls really deserve this. Although girls sound so weird now that I've said it, but you know what I mean.

These women, these badass women, these women, these women, these women folk, these handsome women, they deserve to beat ABC and Jon Stewart.

There you go.

All right. Well, also, I'm gonna be talking later in the show with reporters Samantha Michaels and Isabella Diaz from Mother Jones. They have a new piece called they Kidnapped My Son. ICE is now separating children from m. Their parents in the nation's interior and then deeming them unaccompanied minors.

It's cruel. It's cruel. This is cruel.

It's trafficking. And whereas before, you know, an unaccompanied minor means a child who is sent to the United States by them.

Right.

That's supposed to be what an unaccompanied minor is. But now they're taking these kids. Sometimes they'll just wander away from their parents for a second and they'll snatch them up, take them to detention centers, send them to orr, the Office of Refugee and Resettlement, and then they end up in foster homes.

Right.

This is, ah, part of genocide when you think about it.

Yeah.

Like when the Russians stole a million Ukrainian children or the Uyghurs. Right. This is how they try to destroy a culture.

Yeah.

So I'm gonna talk to those amazing women later in the show.

What's going on with the 11th Circuit? Is there a delay?

Oh, God, yeah. I mean, you know how they were supposed to have oral arguments move up to November 2nd from January of next year? The Trump administration said, no, we're too busy, and we wanna do it later. And they agreed, and they haven't set a date, so they're delaying it, and there's no date now.

All right, thanks, Allison. Check this one out. The New York Times reviewed timestamped images from a security camera at Mr. Tallerico's home, which are provided by his campaign on the condition, of course, that they not be published for security reasons. But the Images showed that Mr. Talarico around the exterior of his home and at its entrances between October 1st and October 8th. And the reason that's important is because they're saying he was in Ohio.

Ohio?

At a mental facility. Checked himself into a mental facility. Now that they don't have that, J.D. vance is on a tarmac talking to people insinuating that Talrico is gay.

Oh, my God.

That's the new thing. And that he's in love with trans children.

Oh, my God.

This is the Vice President of the United States.

Oh, this piece of shit. And I'm telling you, every accusation is a confession.

That's what I said.

I said.

I think. Methinks the lady doth protest too much is what I posted.

Think so, too.

Because, hey,

there's a whole lot of accounts, J.D.

there's a lot, from a very personal friend of mine as well. So, like, y. This is. Yeah, it goes way back to Middleton. Anyway, also, NBC is reporting that the judge that's presiding over the golf course thing, the tree. You know, the trees that came down. Because Trump wants to just steal the M City owned DC Golf course and redo it and name it after himself. District Judge Anna Reyes handed down an order continuing to block anything from being done. She did this a day after an emergency hearing where she accused the government of engaging in deception to knock down more than 400 trees at the East Potomac Golf Links over the holiday weekend. Now, again, but she. This order, Dana, was already in place. They weren't allowed to do anything.

unless they don't care.

Unless they gave notice to the court. So we're just. She's just doing it again. Like, okay, this time I mean it.

Right? I know. I don't, There's no consequences. What are we even doing? They don't give a shit.

And there's not much you can do. As a judge, you know.

Right.

There's just not much you can do. Like, I know people are like, you have contempt. You can throw them in jail. That's to cure something that they aren't doing.

Yeah, absolutely.

And it's, it's not supposed to be punitive. Right now, she can hold contempt proceedings. Bozberg's trying to do that. But that's cut up in appeals right now. And we still don't have a decision from the full en banc D.C. circuit on that. A three judge panel member blocked it. Two Trump judges and a Biden judge who dissented blocked it. But they had a recent en banc hearing and it seemed like they were going to greenlight that criminal contempt, where a judge can appoint like a prosecutor to look at criminal contempt. But she's not doing that here and probably no one is because we're all waiting to see what the Supreme Court says about it when Trump appeals it in the Bourg case.

Yeah, I'm right. Well, that was just the little quick hits.

Yeah. Oh, yeah. We haven't even gotten to the hot notes yet. Let's do that. Hot notes.

All right.

First up from the Associated Press, President Trump's ambassador to Greece. The best is yet to come. Kimberly Guilfoyle resigned on Tuesday after allegations of improper conduct, but insisted she'll vigorously defend herself. The stories keep coming out, by the way. There's another one out just like five minutes ago that we'll cover tomorrow. But the Trump administration said earlier Tuesday it asked Guilfoyle to leave. They asked her to resign after she faced severe criticism over allegations she engaged in improper and possibly illegal conduct before enduring her tenure in Athens. The announcement after days of comments and speculation, came in response to a question to freshly minted White House press secretary Katie Zachary. Aria at her first media briefing Tuesday morning. And it was a train wreck. We're going to cover it. Over on Beans Talk, Zachariah said Guilfoyle had been a wonderful asset to the team and we wish her well. Now, Guilfoyle's departure comes after its possibility was previewed to the Associated Press over the weekend. Remember, Trump registered his unhappiness on Monday with reports of her conduct and said, we're looking at it. We're not happy. And those comments came a day after the Associated Press, citing a senior US Official, reported to Trump and Secretary Rubin are extremely pissed off by Guilfoyle's reported conduct and would likely decide her future this week. Now, in a series of stories dating to last month, just last month, the Wall Street Journal reported questionable conduct by Guilfoyle, including an alleged threat to a host country official, accepting improper gifts and services, and offering to use her influence inside the Republican administration in return for the payment of a large credit card bill. Now, Guilfoyle addressed the accusation on Twitter, saying, these allegations are false, and I intend to vigorously defend my name, my reputation, and my integrity. Okay, girl? Rubio, speaking Thursday before he left Athens, berated journalists for asking about Guilfoyle. He said they didn't know if they were true and that he wouldn't respond if he could not confirm them. And here's what Rubio said. You guys walk around thinking it's just because some source told you something and that you reported it, that it's gospel. That's how reporting works, sir.

Yeah.

You have a source who tells you something and you report it.

That's.

What, are you walking around with your feet attached to your legs? Like, what are you talking about?

Yeah, actually. Yeah, that's, that's how it works.

Oh, my God. Okay, so, a second US Official who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said the State Department's inspector general was already investigating Guilfoyle, which first began surfacing in the Journal late last month and have, as we know, since multiplied. Ahead of Tuesday's announcement, Greek, opposition parties had already called the Foreign Ministry to summon Guilfoyle to respond to the allegations made against her. Quote, this, most importantly, is an issue of national dignity. And that's what the former deputy foreign minister said in Parliament on Friday. Foreign Minister Georgios Gerapatritis responded that Guilfoyle had been treated, quote, the same way as every other ambassador, and argued that an official summons had not been necessary. Now, m. The two top Democrats on the House Foreign affairs and Senate Foreign Relations Committee, that's Rep. Gregory Meeks of New York and Senator Jeanne Shaheen in New Hampshire, as well as the ranking member on the House Committee for Oversight, that's Robert Garcia. They've already called for an investigation into Guilfoyle, so I assume that's one of the things we will. We will investigate once we take, back the House and the Senate. And, you know, I gotta tell you, even though she's not working there anymore, even though Pam Bondi's not working there anymore, even though Kristi Noem is not working there anymore, we can still investigate these people, and it will

be easier probably, to do that since they aren't government officials, which is wonderful. This next story's from Al Jazeera. Small artificial intelligence models could soon begin self replicating on everyday consumer products such as smart TVs and fridges without needing a data center. That's according to researchers. Cool. Yeah. AI Giant Anthropic. In a report released on Monday, the researcher said small AI models may be months away from being capable enough to copy themselves on Internet of things, which is IoT devices used in homes and small businesses. Anthropic's Frontier Red team, which ran experiments using multiple US and Chinese developed AI models, said such self replicating AI would be challenging to shut down due to the lack of centralized host. Jesus fucking Christ. Sorry if that word offends anyone, but holy hell. While data centers would be a, quote, a clear high value target for AI worms, Internet connected devices like smart TVs, fridges, ovens, lawnmowers could soon all. Could you imagine? Fucking lawnmower just starts by itself and is like, I'm off soon. Also provides sufficient computer power for self replication.

I'm sorry, AI worms?

I have no idea.

Is that something Junior brought to the.

Probably, yeah. Although no current AI model proved to be both powerful and small enough to self replicate reliably on a smart TV used in testing, the trend in development makes the emergence of such a model likely by the end of 2026. that's only two and a half months.

Wait, that's right now,

and I quote, home and small businesses IoT devices might be the first target for some attacks because they're connected to the Internet and historically have had minimal security measures in place, researchers William Zhao and Daniel Freeman said. The researchers said they anticipated the future would be, and I quote, awash with agents running on all types of hardware, including some that aren't under human control. What the fuck is going on? Anthropic's report comes as the risks of AI escaping human control are under scrutiny following a slew of incidents of models engaging in unsanctioned malign behavior, including cyber attacks. Maybe one of these is on the good side and they could fix the election. Okay. Anthropic and its chief rival OpenAI have called on the international community to coordinate a slowdown in AI development to minimize catastrophic risks, a suggestion that has had little buy in from the United States and China. Those are the two leading AI powers. Now, many AI safety advocates have identified recursion self improvement, where models learn to improve themselves, as a critical tipping point that could lead to catastrophic harm for humanity. Everything's fine, people. I don't know. I think maybe we've had a good run.

Yeah.

I'm not going to lie like I think this might we're coming to the tail end of this civilization. I just want you to all know I love you. Allison, it has been a joy doing this with you for the last five and a half years.

You too, my friend. Love all of you. Hey. Oh my God, I'm glad. That's why I keep saying, you know, I'm glad I'm 50. How old am I? Three.

In a year.

I don't remember. I'll be 50. I'll be 53. I'm glad I'm not 23. Yeah, right. Like, man, okay, that was all doomsday. Should we do the rest of the news or should we just pack it?

Have a good one, everyone. I'm dg. Okay, maybe the next one from Politico. Politico.

The Supreme Court has agreed to decide whether a watchdog group seeking information about Trump's so called DOGE Department of Government Efficiency is entitled to records showing how much control the budget slashing endeavor wielded over federal agencies. The justices on Tuesday granted the Trump administration's request to review lower court rulings, concluding that the Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington also crew, can force DOGE to turn over records, shedding light on its interactions with agencies across the government. Now, the Trump administration maintains that DOGE made no decisions about cuts to programs or firing personnel at federal agencies and simply offered recommendations to agency leaders. But critics have also alleged that DOGE personnel were, at least in some instances, dictating agency action. Which means it's a government agency, right? They're trying to hide it under the Executive Office of the Presidency.

Yeah.

The eop, now, shortly after Trump announced the creation of doge, CREW filed a broad Freedom of Information act request seeking details on the project structure and its interaction with agencies. However, the administration asserts that doge, housed in the Executive Office of the President, is strictly advisory and therefore not subject to the Freedom of Information Act. That is why they don't want DOGE to be considered an executive agent, and that's why they hid it under the eop. In an emergency docket last year, Solicitor General D. John Sauer successfully asked SCOTUS to step in. He urged the justices to block the discovery process from lower courts. And the high court did not shut the process down altogether, but said in an unsigned order that the lower court's rulings were not appropriately tailored and that the courts were obliged to show deference and restraint in demanding details of executive branch decision making. The three Democratic appointed Justices dissented from that ruling, and after that decision, CREW withdrew some of its discovery demands, but the lower courts ruled that the process could continue. So Sauer returned to the Supreme Court in March complaining that the lower courts had effectively defied the high court's ruling by approving wide ranging intrusive discovery. But that's not what happened. Nicholas Suss, who's crew's chief counsel, said Tuesday his group intends to keep pressing for transparency at Doge. Quote, the lower courts have uniformly ruled that CREW is entitled to discovery in this case to help the court determine whether Doge wields the types of authority that would make it subject to foia. Suss said this in a statement and went on to say, we will work to continue to pursue transparency for the American people who deserve to know the details of the Trump administration's efforts to unilaterally remake the federal government. Now, Dana, those of us who have Freedom of Information act lawsuits against Doge, many of us filed this like right when Doge came out were like, oh, you're under the Office of the Presidency. We're all going to file Freedom of Information act requests to get it to court to see if eventually the Supreme Court will determine that Doge is subject to foia. Right, right. And so. But CREW got there first.

Okay, so.

Well, their decision got higher faster.

Through, through faster.

Yeah, yeah. And so the rest of us who filed early Doge FOIA requests are just sort of sitting, waiting to see what happens in the CREW case.

Oh my God. Yeah. All right, well, we know. We'll keep you all posted when we find out all. Ah, right. This is from Business Insider. A federal judge tore in to Elon Musk for reposting a photo of a former Federal Emergency Management Agency official and accusing her of a criminal conduct. And I quote the fact that Mr. Musk posted a picture of Ms. Komens to his millions of followers while falsely characterizing her government service as criminal action was clearly intended to make her afraid. This is from Federal Magistrate Judge William Fitzpatrick. That's what William wrote in a ruling published on Tuesday. In a blistering eight page ruling, Fitzpatrick addressed what he described as a reputational damage to Mary Comins, longtime federal government employee who was fired from her post as chief financial officer for the Federal Emergency Management Agency in February of 2025. Musk's February 11, 2025 post, which was made when he was de facto leader of the White House Doge office and I quote, served no legitimate governmental interest and was a than state sanction intimidation. That's from the judge. Well said.

it was a really blistering thing. I encourage everyone to read it.

Fitzpatrick wrote that federal officials knew at the time that it was false to accuse Comins of trying to circumvent President Donald Trump's executive order that paused federal funding to non governmental organizations assisting migrants. Nonetheless, Musk and then DH Secretary Christy Noem, among others, made statements that Fitzpatrick wrote impugned, quote, the personal and professional integrity of Ms. Comins. That was Fitzpatrick. For reasons unfathomable to this court, officials chose to turn the power of the federal government against a singular employee with an impeccable record of public Service. In short, Ms. Comins was professionally targeted and personally attacked by government officials for no legitimate reason. Musk's post on Twitter was one of seven statements Fitzpatrick addressed in the ruling. Because Elon, quote, tweeted a post that posted a picture of Cummins and Trump with the text that FEMA CFO Mary Komans was just fired for funneling $58 million to illegal migrant hotels in Manhattan Fafo. In his post, Musk added a criminal action. Fitzpatrick wrote that it was clear to other federal officials that Comins had no authority to stop specific grants and that others had decided to continue funding state and local programs like the ones Musk took issue with. Musk and Noem have since left the Trump administration. Have they? Has Musk left the Trump administration?

No, he's back. He's working for the Pentagon now, remember?

I know. That's my point. The White House did not immediately respond to requests for comment from Business Insider. Fitzpatrick wrote that the federal government did not dispute a list of facts about the case, including that federal officials at DHS and FEMA knew that statements about Coleman's firing were false when they were made. Tuesday's ruling is just one part of the broader legal fight over Coleman's firing. In July, U.S. district Judge Michael Nakmanoff. Nakmanoff.

Nachmanoff. You got it.

Nachmanoff. That's fun.

That's what we do. That's what we did up front. That's what Andy and I did, too.

Oh, my God. It ruled that Coleman's was unlawfully fired. The Trump administration is appealing that ruling.

Yep. Yup, yup, yup. I've never seen anything like this. It's called a clearing someone's name hearing.

Yeah.

Where a judge just comes in and adjudicates under law that your name is cleared.

Yeah.

I think it's fascinating. They're, pretty rare. It's a pretty rare piece, but, like you said, it's part of a broader. A broader fight, a broader legal battle. So congratulations to Ms. Comins over at FEMA and to see the DHS admit that. Oh yeah, no, we knew those were all lies. There was no such thing as Migrant Hotel New York luxury rogue payments or whatever the hell.

Yeah, totally.

All right, everybody, we have to take a quick break, but we'll be right back with that interview I was telling you about with a couple of reporters from Mother Jones, followed by the good news. Stick around. We'll be right back after these messages.

We'll be right back.

So the reason I'm so hooked on Honey Love is simple. I stopped planning my day around when I could take my bra off. Today I'm honored to be joined by Samantha Michaels and Isabella Diaz, who wrote an article recently in Mother Jones called you kidnapped my son. And it's a, ah, terrifying deep dive into what's going on with family separation and children over at the Department of Homeland Security with ICE and customs and border Protection. And I wanted to have them on to talk about their article today. Samantha, Isabela, welcome.

Thanks for having us.

Thank you.

Right off the bat, you just kind of paint this, sounds like a nightmare, like a terrifying nightmare picture of an 11 year old boy. He's a tender boy, right? He's an artist. He's never been separated from his father and they are taken into custody together. But then ICE comes in in masks and basically rips his son out of his arms in this horrifying moment. Can you talk a little bit more broadly about the story of Luis and his son?

Yeah.

so Luis and his son Andres came to the United States in 2023 from Venezuela, and they settled in Texas. They were living in El Paso. Luis, the father, was a construction worker. He had temporary protected status, because Venezuela was too dangerous to return to. But earlier this year, in April, ICE showed up at their house without a warrant and said that they were going to be, arresting Luis. And they took Andres with him and they put the father and son together, initially in a holding facility for ice. but then around midnight, ICE officers came in and demanded that the boy come with him. And like you said, he was only 11 years old. He had never been away from his dad. And so, Luis begged them to let them stay together, but they pulled Andres away, and sort of promised that Andres would be in touch. But that isn't what happened. Issa, I don't know if you want to jump in.

Yeah. And, you know, we talked to Luis when he was in detention. He was at Camp East Montana in El Paso, earlier this year. And I think it really struck us how he sounded like he was in a lot of, angst. He just couldn't understand why he had been separated from his 11 year old son, who he said, you know, that they had always been really close. You know, the boy's mom, biological mom, lives in Colombia. And so, you know, his dad really was, his family, his dad and the stepmom in the US so that really stuck with us how pain, Louise, was that he didn't know what had happened to his son. And for a few days, Louise from inside the detention center was basically calling anyone he could think of, nonprofits, anyone sort of on the outside. and his partner, Andreas. Stepmom was also trying to find any information about Andres. they alarmingly couldn't find any information about him on ICE's online detainee locator. So for all intents and purposes, it was as if the boy had sort of vanished from the system. and it was only after almost like five days that Luis and his partner then learned that, Andres had been, you know, ICE had transferred, put him in a hotel, in a bunch of hotel rooms for a few days, and then transferred him to the care of orr, which is the Office of Refugee Resettlement, which cares temporarily for unaccompanied migrant children. And the big question there was, why was this boy, who was arrested with his dad and who has a family in the US in the community? Why was this kid labeled unaccompanied by, ICE and then transferred as, an unaccompanied kid to the care of an agency that has traditionally cared for kids who entered the country alone and who don't have parents, who. Or guardians who are available to care for them.

And once he was, you know, transferred to orr, Andres was, you know, put into temporary foster care. So he was placed with another family in Texas. And when we talked with Luis, you know, his dad, he was saying, you know, he felt like ICE had kidnapped his son and, like, given his son to another family. Yeah.

And why? Because, I mean, he's got a stepmother. I don't understand, like, what, in your reporting, what do you think the purpose of creating unaccompanied minors, basically out of whole cloth that are otherwise accompanied. What. What is the goal?

Yeah, it's a really good question. because around the country, there are other kids like Andres, right. Who are, you know, living. Have been living in. In the United States for months or years, have been living with their families, maybe with their parents, and then, you know, they're being encountered by ICE in the community, and they're deemed unaccompanied, and they're sent to orr. So why is this happening? When we reached out to the government, they didn't really give a clear indication, like, why they would deem someone like Andres as an unaccompanied minor. You know, they have said that they're trying to, protect children. And, you know, if a child is encountered alone in the community, like, without a parent, they would just, you know, assume that they're unaccompanied. But it seems like, like, the federal government is. Is trying to deport these children rather than protect them. I think unaccompanied minors are being detained and deported at three times the rate that they were even during the first Trump administration. the government, I think, last year.

Is that right?

Issa, had tried to fly, you know, a lot of, unaccompanied children out of a shelter back to Guatemala. They were stopped by a court. But, yeah, it seems like the government is. Is basically trying to deport many of these children.

What happens if a child like this is taken from their parents, labeled mislabeled, unaccompanied, and deported alone? Like, what happens? Do they just fly the lone child with no adults to somewhere else and kick them out of the plane and say goodbye? I mean, how does it work?

I mean, this kind of, as with, you know, the story that we reported on, and I think we made a point of, tracing the parallels that we see with the Original family separation crisis of 2018, right, when kids were being separated from their parents at the border, being deemed unaccompanied and then sent to. Or that of course, was the zero tolerance policy and was used to discourage migrants from coming to the US and there were indeed parents who were deported without their kids and kids who were sent home even years later of separation. And their families were still being reunited and reunified as we speak. And that was eight years ago. But this situation that we described in this reporting, it does seem like it's this new form of family separation, that it's not happening at the border anymore, but it's happening more quietly and in the interior. and in the case of, Luis and Andres, eventually Louise, the dad, he was, you know, the lawyers filed a habeas petition to get them release, get him released from detention. he was released on bond and then after a few months and then he were to return to Venezuela. And so his son Andres was, you know, still in our care. And there was this conundrum about, like, you know, why, what happens to this kid now that his dad is going to be sent to Venezuela, but he has a stepmom who could potentially care for him in the U.S. but then we, you know, there's another wrinkle in all of this, which is sort of like the back story, which is that kids like Andres are spending a lot more time in government custody now. You know, it used to be an average of like 30 days, you know, our shelters and our, or our care, and now it's kind of closer to six months. Some kids are staying in government custody for like a year. and this is happening in no small part due to changes in policies by the Trump administration, including more, demanding requirements for sponsors. So, you know, relatives who can come forward, apply to sponsor the kid and get them home. and so in this case that we write about, the stepmom, she, you know, she wanted to, to sponsor Andre so that the kid didn't have to languish in a government shelter that can often feel like, you know, sort of a prison for, for kids. But she, like many other sponsors, you know, this has been reported widely, was. Was met with a lot of, obstacles. She didn't have the required documents, you know, as a, as a recent and undocumented immigrant, so she couldn't ultimately sponsor him.

Talk a little bit about just a couple of the details here from, from your article about ORR referrals. Like they're bringing kids back to ORR for petty crimes. It seems pretextual. Can you talk a little bit about that? And what, it's a pretext for you, you think?

Sure. So, just to clarify, historically, most of the children who were brought to ORR were kids who had just crossed the border by themselves, and so they were deemed unaccompanied and sent to orr. Increasingly, under the Trump administration, ICE is picking up children who have lived in the interior for years with their families and sending them to orr. And there are a couple of different ways that this is happening. Some of these children had previously crossed the border by themselves, been sent to orr, and then they were released to their relatives, to their families in the interior, and now they're getting picked up again, and they're getting sent back to orr. And then there are folks like Andres who, never crossed the border alone, have always been with their parents, and for some reason they're getting sent to orr. But, yeah, as you mentioned, Allison, a lot of these kids, when they're being encountered in the community, ICE is accusing them of petty crimes, like, like trespassing, or maybe like smoking underage, fishing without a license. Sometimes kids are just kind of in the wrong place at the wrong time. Like, maybe they're at the scene of somebody else's crime and they're picked up. Maybe they're in the backseat of a, car that's like, stopped in a traffic stop, and then they're deemed unaccompanied and sent to orr. So there's all these different situations, and ICE will, will use these, you know, petty offenses as a reason to send them to orr. But attorneys that we spoke with said that most of the time these charges are, they're not actually pursued. once the child gets to, or the children are not actually prosecuted, they're never found guilty of a crime. A lot of times the charges are dropped. and so these attorneys and, and people familiar with the system were saying that they think that these charges are being used as a pretext just to get the children into orr, separate them from their families, and then to try to deport them. Yeah.

And then sometimes, as you point out in the article, they're used as bait, Right?

Yeah. So, like, as Isabella was explaining, once a child is in orr, their family on the outside can apply to try to get them out, to try to sponsor them. But there's a lot of different requirements that go into this application process. And so you'll have families that are required to come to in person appointments to try to fulfill These requirements. And sometimes when they show up at the in person appointments, ICE is there and ICE arrests them and then, you know, tries to deport the adult relatives too.

Maybe just to give a little bit of a sense of, like, how, big of a change, this shift from, you know, kids who are being referred to or from the interior now as opposed to the border. We talked to former administration officials who said that these interior referrals were extremely rare in previous administrations. They were anywhere between 3 to 5% of all DHS referrals to ORR. And we learned that, between July of 2025 and May of this year, ORR received 3,500 referrals from DHS. And 20%, around 20% of those, or some 700 kids came from the interior of the country and specifically from, most of them from ice. So this really shows the shift in the kids who are going into or care, which we talk to a lot of attorneys and advocates and experts who describe that the government shelters are not designed to, to care for kids in the long term to begin with, and certainly not for kids who have, by all accounts, sort of become Americanized because in many cases they have lived in the US for years, which was the case of Andres.

Man. it's devastating. And very well written. Thank you so much for doing this story and drawing attention to this. Can you tell everyone where they can find this story? Because I really encourage everyone to go to Mother Jones and read this full article and then where people can find and follow you both on social media.

Yeah, thank you so much, Allison. so the article is called you kidnapped my son, and you can read it on motherjones.com and yeah, I think you can follow both of us on Blue sky. And I'm not so much on Twitter

anymore, but yeah, same. Although apparently all the Russian bots are gone now, so you can have a little bit better time. Thanks, Zelensky. How about you, Isabella? Where can people find and follow you?

yeah, I'm also on Bluesky as Isabella Diaz. And then, yeah, you should also follow, Mother Jones account there.

Wonderful. Thank you both so much. Again, appreciate the article. And we'll have a link to it in the show notes as well so that people can just click and go and read this really powerful piece. I appreciate your time today.

Thank you so much.

Thank you, everybody.

So just a photo that'll bring a smile to our face. send it to us dailybeanspod.com and click on contact. First up is your good trouble. Good trouble today comes From Greg with two GS, just not in a row pronouns he and him. Some good trouble. Most cities have codes against placing political signs in the right of way. And if you report them to the city, they will remove them in Republican choked Missouri. That's a nice way to put it. Republican choked Missouri. I like to report all the code violating signs for the other party and just forget to report any I might support. Thank you, for you and your team's hard work. And here's to a fascist free future. Try saying that with invisible Invisalign.

No, I will not try saying that with Invisalign.

She will not. Pod tax is Shasta and Luna, of course. Shasta just turned 15 and she lives with us. Luna lives with my in laws and we're not sure of her age, but they're both rescues living their best lives. No need to guess the breeds. These ladies don't have time for that.

Oh my God. They're very cute though.

Wheaton terrier and then some sort of adorable little Lhasa apso with long legs.

I know, it's very cute.

So that's a great good trouble. Call in all the Republican signs that are in the right of way and the city will come remove them.

Absolutely. All right. This is from confused unicorn pronoun she and her. A, good moment for my local area and the incoming blue tsunami. We're A blue splash in a red state. My county since early voting started has had 6,000 voters at Monday's last night's closing. I am so proud of my county. Shout out to Lucas County Ohio. Let's show them that t town knows how to do it. We also are moving steadily on getting flock cameras out as well. It's working through the city council right now. So proud to be a Toledoan right now. I have hope again. Thank you for being here with us and sharing hope and news with all of us. For my pet tariff I have included my rescue kitties, Cheddar and Kiwi. Guess who's who? Lol Kiwi, also known as the one eyed pirate kitty with the pantaloons. She was born with a damaged eye socket her eyes and is fine but her lid is misshapen. I love that word, Misshapen. Excuse me? Misshapen. That could also be misshapen. She's a long haired kitty and when she walks away she looks like she's wearing furry pantaloons. Cheddar is my ESA and the best one I have ever had. We have been through a lot and not just politically. They both make my days brighter. And just a little note, Ohio is an incredible portal to monitor elections. They have a section for absentee and early voters voting data and we are going to give you a link to that in the show notes if you want to follow along. Ohio.

Yeah, they really do. They really do a great job monitoring their elections up there. Look at the babies. Hello kittens. Thank you, confused unicorn. Next up, Mary Beth Pronoun. She and her hey Beans Queens. I've been listening since your first Kitchen Table podcast.

Wow.

That was November 2017, y'.

All.

You've carried me and so many listeners through so much. I'm so grateful to you. I'm a boomer that happened to watch Saturday Night Live last weekend for the first time in ages. I so appreciate you talking about that episode on Beans Talk because I kept wondering what the hell was going on with that host and what was I missing. Glad to know it wasn't me not understanding his humor or lack of it. It's not you, Mary Beth. My good news is that today is my last day working for a paycheck.

Oh.

Everyone keeps asking me what my plans are for retirement. No plans. My biggest worry is figuring out when to listen to my news with swears since I don't have a morning transit time for that. Yeah, but you got all that other time, Mary Beth. If that's my biggest worry, I shall count myself fortunate indeed. Thanks for all you do for my pod tacks. I'm including Suga. She is my neighbor's dog that we babysit occasionally and her favorite thing to do is go to the beach with my spouse and do a little pub crawling. Oh my God, that's amazing. The second photo is from 2016 or 17. We were furniture shopping and this was in the store's restroom. Okay, Dana, first of all, look at that puppy's face.

Oh my God, the baby.

Okay, second of all, in the store's toilet, right where you would be peeing, is a sticker with Donald Trump's face on it that has his mouth wide open.

Yep. All right, everyone, Next up is from Nicole Pronoun. She and her hello lovely Pulse princesses. I know you're not a sports show as discussed during the World Cup. However, I want to call attention to something that is currently bringing me joy. Along with millions of others, the Milwaukee brewers are currently in the midst of the NLCS playoffs against the Dodgers. Our Midwest teams are usually full of spunk and energy, but this team, this is something else. With one of the youngest average roster ages in the league, it has been an absolute joy to watch the excitement of the players. They love the game, they love their teammates, and they love Milwaukee. If you aren't following them, I encourage you to check out the highlights and backstories of our players. I've been a fan for decades, but this team has an energy and cohesiveness like no other and has been making me smile every day as we head closer and closer to November 3rd. Watching them play has been a welcome distraction for my podpet tariff. I've written in before and shared my 22 year old Mitzi, who crossed the Rainbow Bridge two years ago. After she passed, I started cat sitting on the side. I adore my clients and I love the extra snuggles I get from all of them. Thanks for all you do to bring light to this muddled up world of ours.

Look at all the kittens and Nicole. I was at the Padres brewers games three and four in San Diego. I was sitting about five feet away from Cronenweth's home run that came down into right field. And. And of course, as a Padres fan, I'm extremely sad, but as a Padres fan, fuck the Dodgers. And I'm rooting for the brewers, so. And they are a great team. They're an incredible baseball team, so congrats. All right, next up, another Nicole Pronoun. She and her. Hi, Dana and Allison. First Happy belated Canadian Thanksgiving. Thank you. It was Monday the 12th. Consider this an invitation to you and all the Beans listeners to celebrate with us Canadians, if only to have another excuse to eat mashed potatoes and have friends over. Over. I'm writing from Calgary, Alberta, the Texas of Canada, where we just had our first snow of the season for this lifelong Oregonian. It's wild to get snow in October. My good news today, I just mailed my overseas ballot for all my fellow American expats. It was only a little bit hard and very worth it. I've included a picture of my absentee ballot envelope to motivate other absentee voters and a snap of my cat, Annie lounging under my craft desk. Not sure why she chose this spot over the heated cat bed in the very sunny window, but she's a girl who knows her own mind. Anyway, I'll be there, manifesting blue for America and red for Canada. Funny how the liberal and conservative colors are swapped between the US And Canada, Nicole. It used to be red was Democrat here in the United States and blue was Republican. Isn't that funny? Look at the baby. Look at the baby.

Oh. Oh, my goodness.

That's a beautiful desk, whatever that one is. No, seriously, KOA or something. It's gorgeous. Thank you for that.

All right, next up from sj, pronouns, she and her beloved beans Queens. It's my privilege to write with good trouble update from Arkansas, which absolutely counts as good news. But first, I wanna thank AG for the interview with Rev. Dr. Chris Jones last week, which lit up my heart. I, voted for him in 2022 when he ran against what passes for our governor. And I'm gonna do it again in just a few days. Thank you for giving airtime to his excellence. We are relentlessly optimistic in our Conway County. Dot over here. Thrilled for the beans fam to know about him. Good Trouble update and a good news get up. the mining project I wrote to y' all about this spring, which you so kindly shared about on the air, which would have royally fucked with my beloved, Wash, Utah mountains, has been canceled. Oh, that's amazing. I found out last week from the US Forest Service, Ouachita and Ozark St Francis National Forest social media that the official responsible canceled the quartz mining project because it failed to comply with the time limits. We won. I know they will try it again, but I just want to thank each and every bean who helped me raise hell and also invite folks to sign up for the updates at the USDA Forest Service website. We're going to have a link in the show notes. Theoretically, signing up will help us find out when we get to continue the fight to protect my my spooky old hills. As an incentive, any being who would like one may have a free download of my Mama Mountain song. As I thank you for signing up for those updates, just reach out at and we're gonna have a link in the show notes. But it's sjtucker.com and send me a message. And we're also gonna have a link to the demo song on Bandcamp. so you can go listen. There it is. Good stuff, said the producer. My tax is my kid, huh? Posing at the entrance of the Arkansas Goat Festival. That's hysterical. Y' all go. You gotta come visit link in the show notes to this as well. We will celebrate his 8th birthday later this month. He blows my mind in the best way every single day and he always has. Thank you, sj.

Dude, you have a goat festival. I am so jealous right now. I'm so super jealous. Goat Festival. Incredible. And that's amazing. I'm so glad they canceled out Quartz mining in the Was it Ouachita? Ouachita Min Mountains. Fantastic. Well done. Next up, Lisa from Western Massachusetts. Pronoun she and her Good morning, AG and dg. I so enjoy listening to the daily beans Beans talk and unjustified. My best sources of news with swearing. Thank you and much needed levity in these times. I want to suggest some good trouble for listeners, especially in these last three weeks before November 3rd. If you're driving on a highway and you see people on bridges and overpasses with signs supporting democracy and opposing the regime, please honk your horn a wave or blink your headlights in support. Although I find my overpass shifts fun, and energizing encouragement from drivers helps keep us going even better. Come join us. Your local bridge brigade will welcome you. And there's visibilitybrigade.com we'll have a link in the show notes to find one near you. So let's all get out there. Vote early, vote blue. All the way down the ballot. For my POD tags, I'm submitting a photo of our zinnias cut before the frost last week. and also a photo of a sign that my two black kitties also approve of. Thanks for all you do, AG and dg, for help keeping us sane. Okay, I see the zinnias. I don't see the kitties. So maybe you can send it in again with a whole other good news submission, Lisa, but the zinnias are gorgeous.

Yeah, they are all ah, right from Zarcov. What a great name. No pronouns given. I first found MSW Media when the you don't know Jack launched. I tried to catch your podcast every day, along with both Cleanup and unjustified. Even at 71, I've learned a great deal about the law and our society from you and your colleagues. I want to help get the word out that Harry Dunn will be at the Pablo center in. Oh, goodness.

Eau Claire.

Eau Claire. Thank you, Wisconsin. This Thursday, we're going to have a link in the show Notes. We moved to Chippewa Valley a little over a year ago to be closer for my cancer treatment. We were previously living in deep red Vilas county. That looks like Viless county in northern Wisconsin. Although my wife and I miss living in the woods, we are now nearer to children and grandkids here and are much more comfortable politically in our new bluish purple area. I still travel up north on occasion to visit old friends and fish the clear lakes of the area. On my most recent fishing trips, these two address signs caught my eye. It seems the town has been upgrading the fire numbers. And these two in a deep red area made me snicker. I hope it does the same for you. Oh, my God, this is so good. 8645 and 8647.

Oh, we're all going to be indicted now. but thank you, thank you for that. appreciate all the good news that you can send to us. Please continue to send it in DailyBeansPod.com click on Contact. Any final thoughts, my friend?

No.

No final thoughts for today other than if you're still listening. Go vote for us for our Signal Awards. Because it ends in two days. The 15th is the last day to vote for us. You know you love us. Tell a friend why not?

Yeah, do it. Do it. I know it's a weird long link, but, but it works. Click on it. Vote for the Daily Beans. We love you. We'll see you tomorrow. We do. And we're going to be over on Beans Talk. if you just can't get enough. So we'll see you then. Until then, please take care of yourselves, take care of each other, take care of the planet, take care of your mental health and take care of your family. Vote blue no matter who, and take

everyone you know with you.

And vote down ballot all the way. I've been ag.

I've been dg.
