msw media. Hello and welcome to the Daily beans for Tuesday, October 20, 2026. Today, Judge Reyes questioned Stanley Woodward and the Trump Department of Justice during a hearing about the destruction of the East Potomac Golf Course. After refusing to recuse herself from the case. Donald Trump opposes Jack Smith's testimony in his own BBC defamation case. A dispute between Rick Grinnell and Alina Haba centers around a $17 million transfer from a government account in Congo to a Texas defense firm. The Trump administration is hiring private collection firms to go after people who default on student debt. And the Mississippi attorney general has determined that the police shooting of one year old Cohen Wiley was justified. I'm Alison Gill.
And I'm Dana Goldberg.
Yeah, big heavy sigh on that last headline.
Yeah, just Jesus. I'm like. And that's me. we do have good news, though. There is some good news at the top because we're going to find out today. Allison, what are we going to find out?

Yeah.

Yeah, you can say you went to second base with Dana Goldberg.
I mean, you can. Some of you can get a home run.
It's pretty great. So a couple quick news bites before we get to the hot notes. First from the Washington Sun. Trump administration officials, Dana, they're preparing to impose financial penalties on millions of Americans in default on their student loans next year after the midterms. Of course, that's according to five sources familiar. The Treasury Department is moving forward with plans to hire private debt collectors. Of course, that's according to three of those sources. Possibly as soon as next month. The sources say those plans are unlikely to be announced before the midterm elections.
of course.
Wonder why.
Yeah. All right, and this one's from the Mississippi Press. The police shooting that killed one year old Cohen Wiley as he sat in his mother's lap in a Walmart parking lot in Senatobia, Mississippi, in. In June, apparently was justified. Mississippi Attorney General Lynn Fitch. Fitch's office announced that on Monday officers were responding to a shoplifting call alleging that Wiley's mother, Valencia Wiley, and Latoya Farrell, had stolen a pack of diapers. The women exited the store with the child. As officers arrived, entered their vehicle and began to leave the parking lot. Officers drew their weapons and. And Velicia Wiley lifted her son up to show the officers that a child was in the car. One officer fired into the vehicle, killing the baby as she held him. Officials, have not released any evidence of shoplifting. By the way, Wiley and both women are black. The officer identified as the subject in the investigation, Hunter Foster, is white. I know we don't always talk about that on the podcast, but this may seem very relevant as this case unfolds. Lynn Fitch is the pro life Attorney General who successfully led the stateside in the Dobbs case, overturning Roe v. Wade. So we have some very interesting players in all of this.
Oh, so the pro life lady says it's cool to shoot babies.
Exactly.
Got it. That's just so disturbing and just emblematic of the systemic racial disparity in our two tiered system of justice. Yeah. All right, we do have some better news to get to, so let's hit the hot notes. Hot notes. All right, first up, from the Wall Street Journal maga is back, meaning making, attorneys get attorneys. It's that time of year. The Trump administration officials are lawyering up from Cabinet secretaries to mid level staffers. People who work for Trump are calling law firms in search, desperate search of legal advice as they brace for an avalanche of investigations next year if Democrats take one or both houses of Congress in the midterms. Now, lawyers say the inquiries signal unease that the Democrats will investigate everything from alleged pay to play pardons to the Kennedy center renovation and Donald Trump Jr's wedding. The probes, which party leaders have already previewed, could interfere with Trump's agenda for his remaining two years in office. Administration officials personally face legal, reputational and financial risks if they're roped into these inquiries. Quote, the calls started sporadically in June and have picked up in frequency since then. That's Jud Stone, co founder of Stone Hilton, an Austin, Texas based firm founded by alumni of Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton's office. While the Justice Department will play a leading role defending the administration, Stone says Cabinet level officials and agency heads have been exploring whether they want a lawyer on their side who's working solely in their best interest. Conflict of interest rules mean the same law firm is unlikely to be able to represent several staffers simultaneously. So senior officials are scrambling to lock in their preferred counsel before someone else does. That's according to a prominent lawyer familiar with the situation.
What a mess.
Now, Steve Roberts, a partner at Lex Politica, said the firm catering to conservative clients has been getting calls not just from high ranking administration officials, but dana, also from Fortune 500 companies and startups.
Oh, boy.
Quote, if they've been supportive of this administration, they know there's a possibility that there's a target on their back. Suzanne Grooms, a partner at Cooley and former chief Counsel to the U.S. house Committee on Oversight and Government Reform, said the Firm, with some 1,400 lawyers, has also seen an influx of corporate clients looking for advice on how to prepare for potential investigations. She said companies that donated to Trump's projects or that did business with the government or the Trump family could be swept up in the probes. Democrats on the House Committee on Oversight and the Senate Committee of the Judiciary have already begun sending letters that provide a roadmap for what the administration can expect. House members have sent letters to people and entities connected to the administration, including Jared Kushner, the Kennedy center for the Performing Arts, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, and individuals who were pardoned by the president. They also have targeted Donald Trump Jr. Regarding a Russian Oligarch's reported financing of his wedding. Now, lawyers see these letters as precursors for subpoenas and a sign that congressional probes will kick off more quickly than when Democrats flipped control of the House during Trump's first term. Potentially as soon as February. Quote, Democrats are much more savvy this time around than the first time. That's Ashley Callan, who co chairs Jenner and Block's congressional investigations practice and formerly served as a legal advisor to House Republican leadership. I love this for them because there's just not that many good MAGA attorneys out there.
No, there are not. This one's from the Times. The White House investigation into a dispute between two prominent Trump supporters, Richard Gannell and Elena Haba Milden is apparently. We're using the last name, the full name now, her government name, if you will, centers on a bank transfer from the Democratic Republic of Congo to a Texas defense company. This is from people familiar with the matter. Mrs. Milden, a former personal lawyer for President Trump, stormed into the Oval Office last week, accusing Mr. Grinnell of siphoning millions of dollars from a business transaction in 2025 organized by a Turkish investor who later became her husband. Part of the money, she claimed, was meant to set aside for a donation to the John F. Kennedy center for the Performing Arts, but was never delivered to the institution. Mr. Grinnell ran the Kennedy center at the time. So here we go. Alina and Rick had once been close friends, but have fallen out in Recent months over Ms. Milden's business dealings became public in recent days after the Times began to inquire about Mr. Milden's business activities and his contributions to the Kennedy Center. The questions prompted Ms. Milden to relay her accusations directly to Mr. Trump last Friday. Now, Elena Haba initially told White House officials that the money, $17.6 million, came from her now husband, Taron Milden, whom she married last month. Just last month. The initial set of documents that her husband's lawyer submitted to the White House, however, redacted the name of the sender, according to the people familiar with the matter. The White House later learned that the transfer was made from a bank account affiliated with the Congolese government. This is what people said. Mr. Milden had previously acknowledged to the Times through a spokesman that he does serve as an advisor to the Congolese president and holds a diplomatic passport of that country. I wonder what that president could possibly want from our government. One text message From June of 2025, reportedly from Mr. Grinnell, appears to be asking about payment related to a software system. It's not clear what transacted the text, which was reviewed by the Times it's referring to. They don't know. Well, Mr. Grinnell denied the authenticity of the text entirely. The purpose of the underlying business deal? That's not clear either. Texas AT did not respond to repeated requests for comment. Several senior Congolese politicians attended Mr. And Mrs. Milden's wedding in the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York last month, as did various senior Trump administration officials. Among them was Will Scharf, the White House counsel who is leading the administration's inquiry into the disputed payment. Interesting. So the guy who's leading the inquiry into who's right here attended Elena Hava's wedding last month. Let's see how this turns out, everybody.
Yeah, I'm sure it's going to be super great. Sorry, Ricky, but I think they're all lawyering up for Congress. This is from the Hill and Lawfare and the Associated Press. A lot of things came together for this story. A federal judge refused DOJ's demand to step aside from a key hearing on Monday over the future of East Potomac park, which President Trump wants to renovate into a championship style golf course. The Trump administration has accused U.S. district Judge Anna Reyes of bias after she yelled at a government attorney last week to express disappointment that hundreds of trees were cut down at the park without additional notice in defiance of a court order, I should add. During Monday's hearing, Reyes questioned the Trump administration's claims surrounding its efforts to redevelop the historic Washington golf course, challenging its contention that a recent tree cutting spree did not indicate that work was moving forward on the project, which is temporarily blocked. As I said, by a court order quote, there is no universe in which all of this coincidentally happened all at the same time. That's what Judge Ana Reyes said during a hearing over the fate of the project. It has emerged as the latest legal flashpoint in Trump's campaign to leave his personal imprint on the Capitol. Reyes last week ordered a halt to the golf course's redevelopment plans until at least October 26 after scolding the government for starting a large scale tree removal at the course over the holiday weekend while providing little notice to the court. There was zero notice or the plaintiffs to stop the makeover. Then on Sunday, Trump announced plans on social media to close the course for 15 months starting on November 15 and redevelop the 106-year-old park and the course despite a court challenge by the D.C. preservation league and two golfers. In a post Monday, Trump said the work would start, quote, immediately. And Trump referred to Reyes as a crazed lunatic in a social media post on Monday, which came up during the hearing, as did the photo that Katie Zakaria posted on social media last Friday of Trump's Resolute desk with a picture of the golf course plans on it. And I want to say it's not Trump's Resolute desk. It's the Resolute desk. Monday's hearing started with a tense confrontation between the judge and Justice Department official Stanley Woodward, when the judge asked if any other government attorneys in the room, as officers of the court, were willing to certify everything within a Sunday filing is truthful and legally sound under federal Rules of Civil Procedure. See, only Stanley Woodward signed that filing.
And it was, like, full of bs. In that filing, Woodward argued that there were no final plans for the park. And so she's like, any of you lawyers want to come up and sign this right now? And nobody did, quote, first, the plan is not final because the Park Service has not completed its review, and the details of the proposal are subject to change during the review process. That's what Stanley Woodward's filing said. Now, much of the hearing revolved around Trump's social media posts over the weekend and his appearance last June at the golf course, accompanied by golf course architects and members of the administration, and why there was such a sense of urgency for cutting down the trees. The witnesses at the hearing, Greg Wisher, deputy chief of staff at the Interior Department, and acting National Park Service Director Jessica Bowron, both acknowledged that they had only learned of the National Park Service Cultural Landscape Report in September that led to the tree cutting. That National Park Service Cultural Landscape Report was written in 2019. They're using that as their pretext for cutting down these trees.
they always find some sort of loophole. It's just gross. It's gross. All right, next up from Law and Crime, the BBC and Donald Trump's lawyers are clashing again in the president's defamation lawsuit, this time over whether to subpoena Jack Smith for a deposition. The former special counsel who prosecuted then candidate Trump in the Jan. 6 and Mar a Lago classified documents cases. Only for those cases to be tossed out both before and after Trump's 2024 election win has only irrelevant testimony to offer. BBC matter. That's what court documents detailed Trump's position said on Monday. The BBC last week urged the Southern District of Florida court to set a discovery hearing. We know how much Trump loves discovery. To force the president to provide Possible dates to sit for a deposition himself before discovery closes. Months of requests to Trump's lawyers to set a deposition date have proved fruitless, making the motion to compel a matter of necessity for a robust defense. This is what the BBC said. The BBC added that the president's participation in this case, or lack thereof, resembles what happened in his breach of contract lawsuit against his niece, Mary Trump, our dear friend in New York, which ultimately settled. And On Monday, the BBC's attorney separately filed a notice describing the, quote, matters of national importance that Trump cited to support his unavailability for an October 16 deposition in his own. His own $10 billion lawsuit, which no one forced him to file, end quote, quote. Continues. As BBC now knows, on October 16th, plaintiff attended and addressed a campaign rally in Dalton, Georgia, alongside plaintiff's favored candidates In Georgia's upcoming U.S. senate and gubernatorial elections. This is what a notice said. Plaintiff subsequently traveled to his resort club and residence at Mar a Lago for a Republican National Committee fundraiser event.
Oh, that's why he's too busy to sit his deposition. Yeah.
The BBC, frustrated that it still has not been able to depose and does not even have a schedule to depose the most central figure in this case. None of Trump's arguments for blocking the deposition of Mr. Smith can withstand scrutiny. Plaintiff cannot seriously dispute the injustice of blocking Mr. Smith's testimony. This is what the filing went on to say, adding that it is, quote, difficult to imagine a more authoritative source on these issues than Mr. Smith, who spent years gathering evidence on those topics with the force of the Justice Department and the power of the grand jury behind him. Given that Trump chose to file the case and to the obligations of civil litigation still apply to him, the BBC said he cannot commit the fundamental injustice of preventing the BBC from obtaining the evidence it needs to robustly defend itself on every element of his claim, including plaintiff's burden to prove falsity. And I'm sure it was said with a lovely British accent, obligations of his litigation. Now. U.S. magistrate Judge Angelique Lett late last week set a discovery hearing for 10am on Wednesday, also warning that a continued lack of participation or failure to maintain strict compliance with an existing discovery order will lead to sanctions.

And I love that you paint over old paintings that you don't like. and you can upcycle to Blue Wave paintings.
Yes. just a quick note. Since we're talking about elections and ballots, my mom actually sent me a text in New Mexico. Apparently the ballot started with Democrats on top, then several rows down they were below the Republican and then again went back up to the top. And it's been said that this is intentional. So people please read your ballots carefully in every state that you are filling out to make sure you are filling out the right candidate. Especially if they're mixing in Democrats and Republicans.
Oh God, I get so I like looked like 20 times. I'm always like duh. Is this the right, Is this the right bubble? Is this the right bubble? Is this the right bubble? Double, triple, quadruple, check it. So yeah, make sure you're reading it closely because they will flip flop them on you. I've noticed.
Yes they do. I think they're doing everything to confuse as possible but New Mexico that probably wasn't because I would imagine, you know, it's controlled right now by blue legislature, but still double check everything. All right, next up from Heidi pronouns she and her I live in red central Minnesota. Generally the Dems don't even have candidates for state and federal offices. This year we have a candidate for all of my state and federal offices and the group of candidates have teamed up, walking in parades together, door knocking together and even hosting and gathering with live music and food trucks. Box we're not naive yet it keeps one going. I even hand wrote a hundred postcards. Heidi Rock on this is Spike. He just got two kittens to play with and is very happy guy.
Look at the kitty in the box. I love it. Thank you so much for that. Next up, JT from SC Pronouns he and him. I'd like to propose some good trouble to the Beans community. While we're working on electing people who aren't bigots here in South Carolina, there is damage being done that we have to fight outside of electoral cycles. Earlier this month, the South Carolina Arts Commission engaged in some fuckery and denied funding to only two applicants statewide. Oh wow. They limit it to two people. The Greenville Gay Men's Chorus and Proud Mary, the state's only queer focused theater company. Oh, they denied funding to the only two applicants statewide. I see. Wow. All right, so. So apparently the Greenville Gay Men's Chorus and Proud Mary were the only two applicants for funding and they denied them both.
Wow.
Both groups have received funds in the past and in this funding cycle the commission changed its rules behind closed doors and used some pretty bigoted language while denying funds. I've been lucky enough to work with Proud Mary in the past and they produce really high quality work representing and elevating queer and especially trans voices. Any support or help that Beans Village can provide this amazing group would be be very welcome. The Greenville Gay Men's Chorus has a Christmas show coming up December 9th and it's at the Greenville Theater. The South Carolina Public Radio article about the fuckery is here and we'll have it linked in the show notes and we'll also have a link to proudmarytheater.com which is proud Mary's website.
Very nice.
Great flyer. Marion Bright for the Gay men's chorus on December 9th. That's lovely. Thank you, JT.
I know. All right, next up from Jen. No pronouns given. Hello, Beans team. Feeling very overwhelmed with everything going on, but I did just submit my ballot, so yeah, I voted a small thing when added together with many other people's small things will hopefully bring about some really big change. The picture is me as a kid with my 70s doctor kit giving my mom her immunization. Just sorry. Most likely to protect her against how stinking cute I was in these plastic spectacles. Also, a friendly reminder that this month is the perfect one to update any needed shots. Keep the good news rolling. this is so freaking adorable. And actually John, I appreciate that. I think I need to get my MMR updated. I think my, immunization is pretty low and then I need the flu shot. So, yeah, appreciate the reminder yeah,
I'm gonna check mine too, since you brought that up. And I think a listener wrote in and said, check your MMR protection.
Yeah.
Levels and stuff with all this, I
think my levers very low.
Last time I got my blood tested, Junior measle. Did you see they announced a woman. A women's health initiative or some. That RFK Jr. Is going to be in charge of.
Jesus Christ. No, I did not.
It's gonna be like, we all have hysteria and we need to do cocaine about it, I think is what I mean.
Listen, if they're providing. Kidding everyone. I'm kidding.
Government funded. Here's your government. Never in my mind with your side of raccoon wiener.
I know. I think I'm one of five comedians that's never done coke in their life.
He totally. Oh, man. all right, next up from Bruce, NC HBCU students march to an early voting polling place after their on campus site was taken away. We're gonna have a video and link in the show notes. And I saw this in one of my feeds. The kids are all right. I saw this. I saw this. Went viral on social media. They're talking about, I think, A and T in North Carolina. They walked 45 minutes. They marched each one to go and vote. Just a big, huge, massive group of students, walking past the Woolworths also on the way there. So thank you for that, Bruce. and I'll take the next one. Ultraviolet catastrophe guy pronouns he and him. Not sure how to categorize this submission, but as someone who makes fun of the English language and pronunciation all the time, I stumbled upon this, I think, eight years ago, and I think it's worth sharing. Vote blue no matter who. This ended up making a lot of sense when I was in West Virginia and the Democratic gubernatorial candidate was a Republican and he wasn't any hue of blue at all. He's now the Republican senator Jim Justice. Insert your booze here. It is a reminder that it's not about the letter and that even purplish is better than red or yellow. Right, because we were talking about that happening in Montana yesterday. Yeah, Podpet tariff. Last time you got Francesco Tuxedo bowling ball. The permanent stare obstacle. This time you get both him and his adopted brother Carlo attempting to kill me, as a tandem staircase tripping hazard. Plus Carlo stealing a dog bed dogs reserved for future tariff payments. Oh, Ultraviolet catastrophe guy. Thank you. Look at that right there on the stairs. Plotting your demise.
Look at that adorable goodness.
So cute.
All right, from Trisha. Pronouns she and her, ah, voter pamphlets in Oregon are telling Oregonians not to to use the USPS to return their ballots. And they are installing even more extra sturdy ballot drop boxes that have security cameras around them. Oregon has voted by mail for over 30 years. The federal government does not get to take that from us. So proud of my blue state, Trisha. This is awesome. And I love that they are being very overt about it.
Yeah. And at first I remember thinking like a year ago, like, I'm not sending my shit in the mail. But then I didn't want to sound like. Like, I didn't trust mail in voting because that's what Donald Trump says. But then I'm like, no, fuck this. Take it to a Dropbox. Fuck the Trump post office. Right? Do you want to grab the next one too, since that was so short?
Absolutely. This is from Diane Pronoun. She and her. Good news, our daughter started her new job last month, so both kids are graduated and employed. In other news, I just early voted in Fulton County, Georgia. Hopefully there won't be any election hijinks. Thank you for all you do supporting us with swear care Enclosed picks my I voted sticker. Our sweet river. Oh, river Doggy.
Hi. dog. That's River. River. So great, Diane. Thank you. Yeah, and being from Fulton county, you got to be like, ah. what are they gonna do? Like, that's a huge target for this administration. All right, our final submission today comes from Caroline Pronouns. She and her. Hello, Queens of the beans. Thanks for all you do to keep us sane in these stupidest times. I wanted to give my mom Karen a shout out. In 2024, my hometown library board was taken over by Maga, quote unquote Christian fundamentalists who proceeded to do everything they could to undermine the library, including moving 200 books for kids, mostly about LGBTQ topics, to the adult section without reading any of them. My mom's been a lifelong advocate for reading, and she found out about this and she got to work. She assembled a new slate of candidates, found a campaign manager, started coordinating with fight for the first, speaking at library board meetings and knocking on over 800 doors in our rural Michigan community. She and my dad are also working the polls on 113 for the first time. My mom's never been politically involved, and to see her stand up, in a way, has made me so, so proud. Fellow Beans, don't forget to vote in your library and school board elections. They really make an impact. If there's time, I would like to share my sweet orange tabby Cat and ween and win no Anduin like the river from Lord of the Rings. Got it, got it, got it. I'm including photos of him as my pod pet tariff. Anduin came to us in 2021 through the Holy cat distribution system and he is the sweetest boy who just wants to be on your lap all day. However, since our daughter arrived in 2025, he's made it clear that kids stress him the heck out. We worked with our vet for months to try to help him adjust, but nothing clicked. We love our boy and we're heartbroken, but the responsible thing to do is help him find a child free home where he can be his best self again. Maybe look at this baby. Maybe there's a member of the Chicagoland lagunati looking for a sweet boy like him. Including his adopt a pet link below just in case. Thanks again AG and DG appreciate you you so much. I'd also be interested to know if Anduin is good with other animals. Want to look at this sweet baby boy?
I know that sweet face.
Oh, I love him. Thank you for that, Caroline. We'll put that link in the show notes for everybody. That is your show today. That is your news with swearing. Thank you all so much.
