msw media. Hello and welcome to the Daily beans for Tuesday, April 7, 2026. Today, new video from the New York Times shows that the Ice Age agents who shot Julio Cesar Sosacelas lied about being attacked with a shovel and a broom. The Supreme Court is poised to allow the Department of Justice to dismiss the charges against Steve Bannon. The Trump administration is ending civil rights settlements for trans students and a child immigrant suffered sexual abuse in federal custody. I'm Alison Gill.
And I'm Dana Goldberg.
hello, my friend. I wish I could say Happy Tuesday, but it's not a bunch of good news today.
Man, that whole introduction just hit me right in the chest. I just. Man, some days are easier than others to report this shit, but even the beginning was hard to hear.
Yeah, Monday was a pretty rough news day all around. I mean, it kind of kicked off Sunday. We both watched the NCAA Women's Championship game, and, I thought for sure that South Carolina was going to do really well, but UCLA dominated. And congratulations to them and their club. That's first win they've gotten for this.
And you know what? the more I listen to Corey close, I'm, like, so impressed with her. You know, all the. All of you Bruins out there, like, you got a hell of a coach on your hands. And what she's done with that program and those seniors. I mean, the seniors in UCLA scored all of the final four points, 170 points for all the seniors. And I have a feeling they're going to get some great transfers. Again, not a sports podcast, but it is when we talk about raising up women's athletics. And that's what these two coaches have done and the class they had with each other, especially after the bullshit with Gino, after the last game with, you know, Don Staley, to see Don and Corey, like, hug, before the game and then afterward the press conference, you know, dawn giving Corey all the props of what she's done for this program at ucla, but also, like, women's basketball in general. That's what a press conference should sound like. Not the fucking insane one we heard from the President of the United States, by the way.
Right? And, we're gonna talk a little bit more about that conference on beans talk. I'm not gonna subject you to any clips so you don't have to listen to anything that he said, but we'll talk about it. But, yeah, I also like the way Don Staley, when asked about Gino, was like, look, this is.
UCLA's a Gino question. That's Right.
Like, we're not gonna take away from UCLA's brilliant performance out there. And I also thought it was really great to uplift women in sports. Dawn Staley played a lot of her freshmen toward the end of that game to give the freshmen some experience on the court. I just thought that was just.
She's just so well done. She's a class act. She's absolute. And she's the goat. I mean, she's a class act, and she's absolutely incredible. And what she said is to lose to a team that she respects so much. The coach and the players, they outplayed South Carolina. Everything clicked. And listen, it's not because South Carolina isn't an incredible team. We saw everything click with them, against Connecticut. It's just sometimes that's what happens on the floor. But it was really interesting that, you know, UCLA going into this game was such an underdog. They were number one. They were undefeated the whole season. It's just that everyone else was getting the attention. So it's. I think they were,
Persistent.
Yeah, they were persistent, and I think they were under, Not. They were. Why can't I think of the right word? This is what menopause does to you people. They weren't given the credit that they deserve going into this. Someone is yelling it at their podcast right now. Someone's yelling the right word at. At me right now. I know. It's.
Yeah, menopause brain is real. I realized today I'm halfway between 40 and 64, and that really bothered me today. Wow.
That isn't interesting to be
upset about. No, I know. And we have plenty more to be upset about. Like you said, that news conference went off today, and of course he went up and he bragged about this rescue mission that wouldn't have had to occur. He wouldn't have had to put all those people in harm's way, had he not started this war in the first place for no reason. He gave away. They gave away so much classified information and classified intelligence in this briefing. I remember when he was like, oh, how many people again? He asked Dan Kane, like, how many people were involved in this rescue mission? And he's like, I'd really like to keep that a secret. And Trump was like, yeah, I know you want to keep it a secret, but it was hundreds. And he just. And he just told everyone. Like, it reminded me of that awkward press conference with Mike Johnson when they were talking about Dunn. Representative Dunn's heart problems. And he's like, we were told not to talk about it. And he's like, yeah, well, he needed a new heart and I gave it to him. We saved our votes or whatever the fuck.
Allison, I'm telling you, this is a dementia thing coming forward. That one part of your brain that says don't say that out loud is, is, I think, very damaged at this point. I think it's compromised. And so I think more and more he is a threat to our national security and the national security of this world because he's just saying the quiet parts out loud. And that's fucking dangerous. He is dangerous right now.
Extremely dangerous. And we have a lot of other pretty crappy news, but we're going to get through it together. Let's hit the hot notes. Hot notes. All right, first up, from the Times. Almost immediately after an immigration agent shot and wounded a Venezuelan immigrant in Minneapolis this winter, the federal government cast the injured man as an attempted murderer and the agent as a victim of a brutal beating. But that version of events began unraveling when prosecutors dropped the felony charges against the injured man, Julio Cesar Sosilis, and one of his housemates, Alfredo Alhora, who had fled from immigration agents. But video footage of the shooting, newly obtained by the New York Times, has raised questions about why it took weeks for the government's case to fall apart when it should have fallen apart immediately. The video contradicts the agent's claim that the three assailants had beaten him with a shovel and a broom for roughly three minutes before he opened fire. Instead, the confrontation depicted in the video lasts 12 seconds and shows two men struggling with the agent. It shows no sustained attack with a shovel or a broom. The federal government had access to that video within hours of the shooting on January 14, the Minneapolis Police chief said. But prosecutors did not watch the footage until nearly three weeks after they filed charges against the two men. Quote, bare due diligence would have shown that the agents were lying. That's Mayor Jacob Frey of Minneapolis in a recent interview shortly after he watched the video for the first time. The shooting was a rare instance in which US Immigrations and Customs Enforcement under the Trump administration, ultimately acknowledged a serious lapse. The agency's acting director, Todd Lyons, said after the charges were dropped that the two agents had appeared to have lied under oath about the events, adding that they'd been placed on leave, not fired. Interesting, but they could end up facing criminal charges. Department of Homeland Security did not answer written questions about the video, including whether it reviewed the footage before describing the incident publicly. The video, which the Times obtained after filing an open records request was recorded on city owned cameras at a nearby intersection. The shooting of Mr. Sosa Selles came during the height of the Trump administration's deployment of thousands of immigration agents to Minnesota Operation Metro Surge.
Yeah.
Prosecutors did not watch the video before they filed those charges, the official said, instead relying on the ICE agent's statement and an FBI agent's affidavit describing the footage. Almost three weeks would pass. Like I said before, a prosecutor would watch the video. And the Justice Department official said that. And the U.S. attorney's office then moved to dismiss the case days before a deadline to secure a grand jury indictment. So they hadn't even gotten an indictment yet. When the top federal prosecutor in Minnesota asked to dismiss the case, he alluded to the footage and called it newly discovered evidence. They'd had it for three weeks as the federal prosecution of Mr. Alhorna and Mr. Sosacelles was coming together. State investigators were also examining whether the ICE agent acted lawfully when he opened fire. But the Minnesota investigators have been stymied by limited federal cooperation, including an unwillingness to provide information as basic as the agent's name. And the story ends with because the names of the agents have not been released, it was not possible to seek comment from them.
Ah, it's fucking insane. I cannot wait till all these people are gone. Like the pendulum's gonna swing back and I hope it hits all of them with the force of everything we have Agreed. Next up from the Post. The Trump administration's ending civil rights settlements that aim to protect transgender students from discrimination, the Education Department announced that Monday. I didn't realize there was still an Education Department. The agency's rescinding agreements with Taft College, a California community college, and five local school districts across the country, calling the settlements illeg legal. Past administrations distorted the law. That's a quote, by the way. By investigating allegations of discrimination rooted in gender identity rather than biological sex, the Education Department said in a news release, and I quote, today the Trump administration is removing the unnecessary and unlawful burdens that prior administrations imposed on schools in its relentless pursuit of a radical transgender agenda. This is from Assistant Secretary of Civil Rights Kimberly Reiche. And like in the Third Reichi. Is that what that's. As in Third Reiche said in the news release, the agency said it would no longer enforce agreements reached with Taft Cape Hennepin School District in Delaware, Delaware Valley School District in Pennsylvania, the Fife School District in Washington, La Mesa, Spring Valley School District and Sacramento City Unified School District, both in California. The agreements involve title Ix. As we know, it's a federal statute prohibiting sex discrimination in schools. Now, Reichi noted that the Trump administration has also opened a number of civil rights investigations into schools for allowing biological men who identify as women to participate in women's sports or use women's locker rooms. This is a developing story. We're going to keep you updated. As much as I hate bringing you this sort of news, I think it's so necessary that we see the utter cruelty that is coming out of this administration on, a daily basis that continues to affect our transgender community, so that we continue to fight for the transgender non binary community.
Yeah. And I'll be honest, you know, you say, I didn't even know we still had a Department of Education. I think the only reason it stays open is so that they can put the LGBTQ community in harm's way through decisions like this. I think that's their only purpose, the only function that they serve right now.
Sure seems like it.
all right, next up and content warning for sexual assault. Okay. Of children. For five months, the young father waited for his three year old daughter's release from federal custody after she crossed the US Mexico border with her mother, hoping through delays for their safe reunion. Only when he turned to the courts as a last resort, did he learn that the girl, the three year old had suffered sexual abuse alleged at the foster home where she'd been placed by Immigration and Customs Enforcement officials after they separated her from her mother. Quote, she was so long in there, said her father, who is a legal permanent resident in the United States. He went on to say, I just think that if they would have moved faster, nothing like this would have happened. He spoke to the Associated Press on the condition of anonymity to prevent identifying his daughter as a victim of sexual abuse. President Trump's administration began targeting detained immigrant children like the man's daughter last year when it implemented new rules and procedures, which were immediately followed by a dramatic jump in detention times. The federal government intensified efforts to expand family detention indefinitely by motioning to terminate a, cornerstone policy that ensures the protection of immigrant children in federal custody. For months after the girl was placed in foster care, her father's attempts to be reunited stalled because the government told him he couldn't make an appointment to get his fingerprints taken. During that time. According to court documents, the girl said she was sexually abused by an older child staying with her in foster care in Harlingen, Texas. A caregiver. Again, content warning here, a caregiver noticed the child's underwear was on backward the girl then told the caregiver she was abused multiple times and it caused bleeding. Federal Office of Refugee Resettlement officials told the father that there was an accident and his daughter would be examined. The girl was forensically examined and interviewed, according to the lawsuit. The abuse allegations were reported to local law enforcement. That's what Lauren Fisher Flores said the lawyer representing the girl after the months long delay, months long delay attorneys sent the government a letter in February and prompted them to allow the father to receive appointments for a fingerprint background check, a home visit and a DNA test. Then the Office of Refugee and Resettlement stalled again, offering no timeline on her expected release. Attorneys filed the habeas petition this lawsuit in federal court, and two days later Orr released the girl to her father. It was while the attorneys prepared the lawsuit that the father realized the accident officials told him about was alleged sexual abuse.
Thanks so much, Allison. all right, our last story. I wish was good news, but it's not, which is why we need yours. So we're going to get through this last story with this piece of shit and then we are going to take a break and we're going to palate cleanse. The story comes from msnow. The Supreme Court on Monday granted the Trump Justice Department's request to vacate an appeals court ruling against Steve fucking Bannon after the Department of Justice told the high court that it wants to dismiss the matter that was brought against the Donald Trump ally during the Biden administration. The high court relief doesn't officially dismiss the case, but it clears a path for that conclusion as the Department of Justice has a pending motion in the trial court seeking dismissal. The next step will play out in lower court. Bannon was convicted in 2022 for not complying with the House January 6th select committee. He served a four month sentence after the justices refused in the summer of 2024 to let him stay free while he appealed. He continued his appeal after serving his time, filing a petition with the justices in October after his appeals court loss. The legal issue, centered on the government's burden of proof, is in contempt cases. That's the burden of proof, okay? That's the issue we're dealing with. Bannon claimed he reasonably believed, based on legal advice, that he didn't have to respond to the committee subpoena. To the extent that he raised an important legal question, it will remain unresolved with Monday's Supreme Court action. Notably, the Trump DOJ initially waived its rights to respond to Bannon's petition at the high court, which would typically have led to the court denying it and letting his conviction stand. But in November, the court requested a response from the doj, which in a typical criminal case would have been a brief opposing Supreme Court review, seeking to uphold the conviction. Yet the Department of Justice instead responded by seeking the bespoke treatment granted by the Justices. On Monday. As is typical in such cases, the Supreme Court didn't issue an opinion to explain why it took the action. It did on Monday's order list, which is a routine document containing the Court's latest announcements on pending appeals. All the court said was, and I quote, the petition for a writ of certiory is granted, the judgment is vacated, and the case is remanded to the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit for further consideration in light of the pending motion to dismiss the indictment. Yeah. The DOJ didn't specify why it wants to abandon the case at this point. I have some ideas. Only that it has, and I quote, has determined in its own prosecutorial discretion that dismissal of this criminal case is in the interest of justice. Is it? In its brief to the Justices, the Department has cited cases stemming from the FIFA corruption scandal in which the government recently sought and received similar high court relief on criminal defendants behalf. They're all fucking corrupt too. By the way, you're wondering why he
got the FIFA Peace Prize.
I know. Yep. The government's decision, and I quote, the government's decision to dismiss an ill conceived prosecution, even at this late stage, is commendable. That's Bannon's lawyer. That's what he wrote in his final brief to the Justices in February. Just disgusting. I know that we're just losing hope when it comes to, like, consequences for these people. I just have to believe we'll get the power back. eventually we'll get these power back and these motherfuckers are still going to be alive. And I'm not. No. You know what? I'm a vindictive person. I want everyone to pay.
I know. Somebody was like, you better be glad we're not seeking revenge. And I'm like, well, who? What do you mean, we got a mouse in your pocket? I'm looking. But I will say this, and this is going to help me sleep a little bit better tonight. Even though these charges might be vacated, he did serve his full term in prison for this crime. Okay, so he, he did face consequences, but now they want to vacate it. So it's going to be largely symbolic, but like, what the fuck? Even, like, why?
I know, and thank you for the correction he did serve time probably wasn't enough, but I guess it is just like not.
No. I mean he didn't serve time for his actual like we build the wall fraud case because Trump pardoned him for that and he didn't serve time for
the all the money he stole insurrection
because Jack Smith said it wasn't even right. It wasn't even worth going after, you know, these recalcitrant.
Yeah.
But anyway, thank you for that and I'm so sorry. I wish we had better news today. We do have some kind of cool stuff that we're going to go over on Beans Talk. I've had my Helix mattress for several years now, as you know, and it's still one of the best choices I've ever made and the easiest recommendations for me to make because it made such a noticeable difference in how I sleep. Before I switched, I was having the kind of nights where I went to bed on time but still woke up feeling like I had not had any sleep. I would toss around, wake up stiff, wake up sweaty, and start the day already exhausted. I was starting from behind the eight ball, but once I switched to Helix, that change and the change happened. Starting the very first night I felt more supported and over time I started noticing more consistent sleep and fewer of those mornings where I felt like my body had been fighting the mattress all night. Even my Apple watch started showing better sleep patterns, especially when it came to deep sleep, which definitely got my attention. That is one reason I really like that Helix has actual data behind what they do. They say in an independent third party sleep study that they found that 82% of participants saw an increase in deep sleep cycles on a HEL helix mattress. 82%. Now that tracks with my own experience because better support really can change how restorative sleep feels. I also think Helix makes the buying process much less stressful. Their sleep quiz helps match you to a mattress based on how you actually sleep, which is a lot more useful than standing in a store for 10 awkward minutes pretending you can judge a mattress under fluorescent lights. They also offer free shipping in the United States, a 120 night sleep trial, a limited lifetime warranty, so there's like no risk. and for me it all comes down to this. I've had mine for years, I sleep better on it and I would absolutely buy it again. So go to helixsleep.com dailybeans for 20% off site wide. That's a spring savings event for you. That's helixsleep.comdailybeans for 20% off site wide helixsleep.comdailybeans Everybody, welcome back. It's time for the good news. Good news. Oh, my gosh, we need the good news so much today. Please send all your good news to us. Please, please DailyBeansPod.com click on Contact. It can be little good news, big good news. It can be from yesterday. It could be from 20 years ago. Yep, Bruce Springsteen with the Born in the usa. Cold and the flag.
Yep.
Heather Cox, Richardson, Don Lemon, Taylor Swift and Barack Obama.
Jimmy Kimmel and Lin Manuel Miranda.
Oh, that's who there is there at the back is Jimmy Kimmel and Lin Manuel Miranda.
Holding it down.
amazing. Thank you so much. That's an incredible painting. really, really appreciate that. And triple your vote load in that house. That's amazing. Congrats.
Love it. All right, this is from R. Mark. Two things. One, I just flew internationally out of Chicago, was through security in five minutes. Didn't see a single ICE agent. Well, that's nice to hear. Two, I've been away from home for a while. Right after my wife got a new puppy, I took him and one of my twins to Central park and was stopped immediately by a dude. Is that your dog? Yup. Man, that is a girl magnet. He was not wrong. During the mile walk, we were stopped five time. I would like to borrow your dog. Look at the puppy, Mark. I mean, it's so cute.
Look who's there in the background on the computer screen.
I mean, she's pretty cute.
What do you think this is? Chihuahua mixeteria or something? Yeah, it says supposedly a Chihuahua. Look at this sweet baby.
Oh, God, it's adorable. Adorable chick magnet.
Yeah. For real. R. Mark. Thank you from Crystal. Pronoun. She and her greetings coronated leguminous one. I love this. I have some good trouble for you. I found through Whitney Elise on my feed. And here it is. Use your favorite search engine, library and or bookselling website and search for the author. Ah, I, know what this is about, Crystal. You're talking about bell hooks. Because I saw this on TikTok. I'm just going to continue to read this because this is pretty incredible. Lowercase is her style preference. Bell hooks. And, do this to bump up her algorithm because J.D. vance's Hillbilly Elegy and his upcoming book Communion are named oddly Close. Two of bell hooks's books. Her books are Appalachian Elegy, published in 2012, before his Hillbilly Elegy, and Communion, published in 2002, 24 years before J.D. vance's book Communion. We can't let her be overshadowed. I'm sorry to say I had to learn more about her on Wikipedia. But for those who don't know, she's a black woman who described herself as a queer. Past gay. queer. Not gay. Queer. Pas. Gay. Okay. And her Christian Buddhist beliefs, show through in her writing and activism. She was a prolific author and distinguished professor whose books are immediately Going into my to be read pile. Thanks as always for keeping us all updated and fighting the good fight. You and all the staff are much appreciated. Podpet tariff is an adorable fail otter because none of us are perfect. But when we try our best, even our failures have the potential to bring joy. Now. Now, what Crystal's asking us to do, Dana, is to go and Google. Use your favorite search engine, library bookseller, to just search for her name, bell hooks, so that when people search communion, her book comes up instead of J.D. vance's.
Oh, got it.
Nice look at the baby otter. And, we do have a Jezebel article link for this curious situation called JD Vance Keeps Copycatting feminist book titles. There'll be a link in the show notes for me.
Oh, my gosh. Oh my God. All right, this is from Marianne Pronouns. She and her hello, beautiful beans queens. I've been enjoying all the coverage of last weekend's no Kings 3 protest. One thing I see quite a lot is older folks asking, where are the young people? Well, here's my contribution to that demographic. My 19 and 23 year olds. Getting out there, getting loud. I'm so proud of them for participating in two events in our area. Even though I wasn't able to join them, I made plans out of state with a friend and we joined two local protests. We met up later that night. They were so excited to tell me about their experiences. They were praised by organizers for their enthusiasm and asked to join a local group looking to support immigrants in our community. They also encountered not so friendly neighbors that tried to intimidate them by getting too close. But my girls weren't having it. They were tired and emotional after a long day and their throats hurt from chanting and singing. But most of all, they were energized for what comes next. Same here. So proud. For my pod pet tax, I present a pic of my girls and their fantastic signs. These pictures, end quote from my youngest, made the front page of our local paper. And a pic from the protest. I went to these dancing axolotl kept the crowd entertained on a chilly March day. Thanks as always for all you do. And fuck Donald Trump.
Oh, look at this.
I love this. If your voice held no power, they wouldn't try to silence you. And the other one says, as a woman, I hope one day I have as many rights as a gun. So good you've done. You done good. You done good, Marianne.
you done good, Marianne. Next up, Joy pronoun. She and her. Oh, my gosh, look at this dog. And this baby. Hello, you fabulous beans. Queens, I've listened to you nearly every day since a few months before the orange nightmare took office. I knew I needed a way to keep my sanity in check, and listening to your show has kept me mostly sane. You recently mentioned student loan forgiveness. My loans have been in limbo for a couple years now, and I was not hopeful about forgiveness. But I searched my email today. My loans were forgiven.
Wow.
I'm so happy. I've got tears in my eyes. After double checking and seeing zero balance on over $30,000 in loans that never seemed to budge, I had to share this wonderful news with you and thank you for letting me know. Keep up your awesome work. P S picture is my daughter now 15, one of my favorite picks ever. Joy, congratulations. Yeah, everybody search, man, they just forgave another 170,000 loans. So give it a check. Look at the baby in the doge.
Yeah.
So great. So wonderful. Oh, thank you. Boy, everybody, we really needed this good news today. So thank you so much for sending it in. Keep, please piling it on. Pile on the good news. Dailybeanspod.com Click on Contact. Dana, do you have any final thoughts before we.
I do have a final thought. If you have given up on the world and you have some time to watch a Netflix show. I just binged watched the fourth season of Love on the Spectrum, and it is so fucking beautiful and innocent and wonderful and you will laugh and you will cry and just allow yourself to watch human beings that are considered neurodivergent that honestly are able to express themselves better than most. I don't, neurotypical people I know when it comes to relationship communication because they learn it. They learn it. They learn it from experts. And they're honest. They're honest about their feelings and with each other, but it's such a palate cleanser. Please, if you have time, time, just watch it. You're gonna fall in love with these people. I have no connection to the show. It's just such a. It's such a warm thing right now in this chaos.
Wonderful. I needed that. I will definitely do that. Thank you, Dana, for that recommendation. And everybody, we're going to be back in your ears tomorrow. Actually, I think you're traveling tomorrow, Dana, so I may be solo, but somebody will be here for you. We promise.
I was like, wait a minute, I'm not going anywhere. Am I going anywhere tomorrow?
Oh, is it. Maybe it's next Tuesday.
Yeah, no, we're good.
Oh, yeah.
See? And it's next I think it's next Tuesday. I have a gig. I'm not even traveling. I have a gig. I'm going to raise a bunch of money for some people that are, I believe they're called House Insecure. Now, I'm not even sure the correct word, but it's for unhoused. An incredible organization. I'll tell you all about it after it's done. But I'll be here with you this week. Okay?
Yeah, just don't let nobody listen to me. It's fine.
We'll be back tomorrow. Maybe we'll just keep you on your toes, people.
Yeah. Ooh, Dodger. Yeah, that's what I'm going to do. I'm going to, going to keep telling you whether, you know, it's going to be a surprise every day, whether Dana's going to be here so I can manipulate the stock market every morning with that information. Keep, you on your toes, because I do. It's the weave. I call it the weave. You never know. But I know. And it's. It's, I have a plan, but I'm not going to tell you about it. It's going to be great. Everybody will see you tomorrow. Until then, please take care of yourselves, take care of each other, take care of the planet, take care of your mental health, and take care of your family.
